Tetralobulate (Type A) glandular trichomes are present on foliage of many wild as well as cultivated species of potatoes. These trichomes confer resistance to insect pests if their density, gland size and biochemical products are similar as those ofSolanum berthaultti Hawkes andS. polyadenium Greenm. Hybrids ofS. tuberosum L. ×S. berthaultii have been screened for resistance by measurement of phenolic oxidation activity in their Type A trichomes by use of an enzymic browning assay. However, variability in the procedure has prompted the development of an improved assay. 相似文献

Phenolic compounds in Type A glandular trichomes of two insectresistant potato species were separated and identified using a combination of high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV-visible spectrometry, and1H proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) procedures. Type A trichomes ofSolanum berthaultii andS. polyadenium contained a phenolic compound tentatively identified as the glucose ester of p-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid. Its presence in trichomes of both species suggests that this compound may play a major role in formation of the brownish, insect entrapping exudate characteristic of trichome-mediated insect resistance in these species. Chlorogenic acid, a major phenolic constituent of Type A trichomes ofSolanum polyadenium was not detected in trichomes of 5.berthaultii. The exclusive presence of chlorogenic acid in trichome exudates ofS. polyadenium may be responsible, at least in part, for the greater levels of insect entrapment by this species, compared with that ofS. berthaultii. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To assess the consequences on body composition of increasing birth weight in Indian babies in relation to reported values in Western babies, and to assess the relationship between maternal and neonatal anthropometry and body composition. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Bangalore City, India. SUBJECTS: A total of 712 women were recruited at 12.5+/-3.1 weeks of gestation (mean+/-standard deviation, SD) and followed up until delivery; 14.5% were lost to follow-up. Maternal body weight, height, mid upper-arm circumference and skinfold thicknesses were measured at recruitment. Weight and body composition of the baby (skinfold thicknesses, mid upper-arm circumference, derived arm fat index and arm muscle index; AFI and AMI, respectively) were measured at birth in hospital. RESULTS: The mean+/-SD birth weight of all newborns was 2.80+/-0.44 kg. Birth weight was significantly related to the triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness of the baby. In a small number of babies with large birth weight for gestational age, there was a relatively higher normalised AFI relative to AMI than for babies with lower or appropriate birth weight for gestational age. Maternal height and fat-free mass were significantly associated with the baby's length at birth. CONCLUSIONS: Skinfold thicknesses in Indian babies were similar to those reported in a Western population with comparable birth weights, and the relationship of AFI to birth weight appeared to be steeper in Indian babies. Thus, measures to increase birth weight in Indian babies should take into account possible adverse consequences on body composition. There were no significant relationships between maternal anthropometry and body composition at birth on multivariate analysis, except for sum of the baby's skinfold thicknesses and maternal fat-free mass (P<0.02). 相似文献

To date, little is known about the larval‐fish assemblages (LFAs) in the eastern Mediterranean. The purpose of this study is to investigate the intra‐annual variations of LFAs with an emphasis on the effects of physical, chemical, biological and meteorological conditions in the gulf of Iskenderun, which is a shallow (100 m maximum depth), semi‐enclosed bay located in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The gulf is under the influence of offshore waters throughout the year. The study was based on an ichthyoplankton survey program performed at 28 stations over 12 months, between November 2009 and October 2010. During the study, a total of 11,411 larval individuals belonging to 177 taxa were sampled. The jackknife estimate of maximum species richness was 225 ± 19 for the study area. The maximum larval richness (84 species) and abundance (827 larvae/10 m2) values coincided with spring bloom in April. Gobiids dominated the ichthyoplankton of Iskenderun Bay by constituting 9% of species richness and 42% of total individuals. Four LFAs were identified which were in early winter (November to January), late winter (February and March), spring (April to June) and summer (July to October). The intra‐annual variations of richness, abundance and composition of ichthyoplankton were significantly correlated with the temperature and mesozooplankton biomass. The wind conditions and thermal stratification were also significantly correlated with the composition of LFAs. In conclusion, phenology of LFAs were formed under the influence of physical and tropho‐dynamic conditions in Iskenderun Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean. 相似文献

Numerous pathologically altered skeletal remains of baboons originating from the galleries under the temple of the god Thot in Tuna el-Gebel/Middle Egypt reveal that these animals were kept in non-appropriate conditions during ancient Egyptian time. This statement is also supported by the low average age of the baboons. Inter alia an extremely deformed skull is described. 相似文献
