The lion's paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus (Sowerby) has considerable aquacultural potential due to its fast growth and large adductor muscle. Prior investigations throughout northwestern Mexico's littoral have reported highly variable growth rates; furthermore, no studies are available of the environment on growth and gametogenesis in this species under culture conditions. This investigation assesses the effect of food availability and temperature on the growth and gametogenesis of N. subnodosus in a suspended culture system at Guerrero Negro lagoon, Mexico. After 1 year of cultivation, N. subnodosus reached 69.13 mm in shell height (SH) (0.196 mm day?1, 14 months old). Two significant growth spurts were observed: over the two first months of culture (August and September 2001, mean growth rate 0.4 mm day?1) and in September 2002 (0.3 mm day?1), both related to high temperatures and chlorophyll a concentrations. The onset of gametogenesis occurred in April 2002, with an increase in temperature (10‐month‐old scallops, 54.5 mm SH). The first spawning occurred in October and November (86.2 and 93 mm SH), with peak temperatures. These results, together with the analysis of previous reports, indicate that N. subnodosus has a higher preference for temperate areas; therefore, the Guerrero Negro lagoon appears to be a suitable site to culture this species.  相似文献

Conservation value of dispersed tree cover threatened by pasture management   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Trees dispersed in pastures are a prominent feature of many Central American landscapes, particularly in cattle producing regions where farmers retain trees to serve as shade, fodder, timber and firewood. The presence of dispersed trees in pastures is often considered as important for the conservation of biodiversity by providing habitat and enhancing landscape connectivity. However, despite their critical productive and environmental roles, little is known about tree distribution within pastures or how farmers’ management decisions influence the trees themselves and their impact on farm productivity and biodiversity conservation. Here, we present a synthesis of (a) the abundance, composition, and size of dispersed trees in four important cattle producing regions of Costa Rica (Caňas and Río Frío) and Nicaragua (Rivas and Matiguás), based on inventory of 18,669 trees on 1492 ha of pasture, (b) the local knowledge, management and use of trees by cattle farmers, and (c) opportunities for ensuring sustainable management of dispersed trees in pasture-dominated landscapes. Dispersed trees were common in all four landscapes, with mean frequency ranging from 8.0 trees ha−1 in Caňas to 33.4 trees ha−1 in Matiguás. A total of 255 tree species were found in pastures across the four landscapes. The total number of tree species per landscape varied from 72 in Rivas to 101 in Caňas and Rio Frio, with mean species richness per farm ranging from 22.9 in Rio Frio to 45.9 in Matiguás. In all four landscapes, a handful of tree species dominated the pastures, with the ten most abundant species in each landscape accounting for >70% of all trees recorded. Most of these common tree species provide fruits or foliage eaten by cattle, or are important timber or firewood species, and are deliberately retained by farmers for these uses. In all four landscapes, farmers had a detailed knowledge of tree attributes affecting pasture and animal productivity, and influenced tree cover through pasture management activities and occasional tree cutting. Current farm management practices are gradually decreasing the diversity of trees in pastures, and in some cases also tree density, reducing their contribution to farm productivity and biodiversity conservation. To reverse this trend, incentives are required to encourage cattle farmers to retain and enhance tree cover in pastures, through the adoption of pasture management practices that favor the regeneration and persistence of a diverse range of tree species.  相似文献

In order to balance the impact of agricultural development on land around coastal lagoons with the protection of aquatic resources, knowledge of the role of the sedimentary phase in the entrapment or availability of nutrients in the water column in areas affected by agroindustrial outlets is important. The Ensenada del Pabellon coastal on the Pacific coast of Mexico was chosen to be analyzed. The input of ammonium and orthophosphate from sediment using semicontrolled benthic chambers near a sugar cane factory outlet was compared to non altered sediment. Phosphate and ammonia loading from agroindustrial outlets has been the primary cause of eutrophication. The inputs of ammonium and orthophosphates from the sediment to the water column depend on their concentration in the agroindustrial outlet's waste water, the local morphology, the tide, and biotic assimilation, in order of importance. Sediment in non-altered revealed maxima of 7.8 mg m-2 d-1 of NH+ 4 and 1.4 mg m-2 d-1 of PO-3_4, whereas in one outlet that greatly transfigures the environment, maxima of 223 mg m-2 d-1 of NH+ 4 and 67 mg m-2 d-1 of PO-3_4 were recorded, which represent an increase greater than 20 times the normal diffusion. These figures varied markedly in space and time. Results from the study indicated that existing levels of nutrient could endanger the future of this ecosystem, including its sustainable fisheries.  相似文献

Background: Direct colloid osmometry provides an objective assessment of the oncotic effects of crystalloid or colloidal fluid therapy, which is especially useful in monitoring fluid therapy of critically ill camelids due to their tendency toward nonspecific hypoproteinemia with increased risk of developing edema and ascites. Objectives: The aims of this study were to measure colloid osmotic pressure (COP) of alpacas and llamas, determine its correlation with concentrations of total protein (TP) and total solids (TS), as well as both albumin (A) and globulin (G) concentrations in the same model (A+G), and evaluate the effects of sample type and storage conditions on COP. Methods: Blood was collected from clinically healthy alpacas (n=23) and llamas (n=22) into heparin tubes. COP of fresh whole blood (COPFB) and plasma (COPFP) was determined using a membrane osmometer. For 20 alpacas, COP of refrigerated whole blood (COPRB) and frozen plasma (COPFrP) was also measured. Correlations between COPFB and TS, TP, and A+G concentrations were assessed by simple and multiple regression analysis to model potential predictors. Results: Median COPFB from alpacas (24.6 mmHg, range 19.3–28.1) was not significantly different from that of llamas (25.3 mmHg, range 22.5–33.7). Sample type or storage conditions did not affect COP. Measured COP had a strong positive linear correlation with TS, TP, and A+G concentrations in alpacas (r2=.7, .74, and .88, respectively). In llamas, COP correlated best with TS concentration (r2=.59), whereas correlation with TP and A+G concentrations was poor (r2=.19 and .25, respectively). Conclusion: COP can be measured using heparinized whole blood or plasma, either fresh or stored. Direct measurement is recommended whenever quantitative knowledge of COP is required in clinical or research setting. Further studies are needed to verify if the poor association of COP with TP found in this study can be generalized to llamas.  相似文献

This study developed growth models for Eucalyptus saligna Sm., E. camaldulensis Dehnh., E. macarthurii H.Deane & Maiden, E. resinifera Sm., E. siderophloia Benth. and E. grandis Hill ex. Maiden, for the central highlands of Angola, and used these models to simulate the development of stand characteristics. The obtained model set included dominant height, diameter increment, tree height and self-thinning models. The study was based on 10 499 radial increment observations measured on cores taken from about 700 trees growing in 22 plots located in seven sites in the Angolan highlands. The model set makes it possible to simulate stand development on an individual tree basis. Comparison of simulated stand development and measurements indicated good performance of the models. A non-linear fixed-effects diameter increment model performed best for most species, but a non-calibrated linear mixed-effects model used with the Snowdon correction was better for E. saligna and E. macarthurii. This study showed a similar dominant height development of young stands as found in most previous studies done for southern Africa. Some differences emerged at older ages.  相似文献

Multiple P450 proteins have been purified from several teleost species, including rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), scup (Stenotomus chrysops) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Identity, relationships and/or functions have been established in these fish species for the cytochrome P4501 As. Information about the structure, function, regulation and relationships of other piscine cytochrome P450 (CYP) proteins is sparse. In the present study we have focused on constitutively expressed CYP forms, P450con and LMC5 isolated from rainbow trout, P450A from scup, and P450b from Atlantic cod, and we consider evidence for the relationship of these proteins to mammalian members of the CYP3A subfamily. Reciprocal western blot analysis shows that P450con and LMC5, isolated from rainbow trout in two different laboratories, are closely related and ostensibly identical proteins. These trout proteins show specific reciprocal cross-reactivity with scup P450A, and polyclonal antibodies (PAb) to the trout and scup proteins both recognize cod P450b, indicating that rainbow trout P450con/LMC5, scup P450A and cod P450b are immunochemically-related proteins. In analyses of liver microsomes of trout, scup and cod, PAb to trout P450con/LMC5 and scup P450A recognize only bands that are identical in migration to the CYP proteins purified from these species, and which were used as immunogens. These CYP proteins purified from fish are each immunochemically-related to mammalian CYP3A proteins, showing recognition by PAb to human CYP3A4 and to rat CYP3A1. PAb to the mammalian CYP3As also recognize the same bands in liver microsomes from these fish species as seen by PAb to the fish proteins. These results strongly suggest that these fish proteins are members of theCYP3 gene family and probably theCYP3A subfamily. Although sequence analysis is required before their designation in the CYP3A subfamily can be confirmed and specified, we refer to these as CYP3A-like. Immunoblot analyses of hepatic microsomes from other fish species with PAb to scup P450A and trout P450con show that multiple CYP3A-like proteins are expressed in liver of several species, including killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) and winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus). Important questions still remain to be addressed concerning CYP3A structure, multiplicity, physiological function, regulation and metabolism of endogenous as well as exogenous substrates in fish.Part of this study was presented at the 10th International Symposium on Microsomes and Drug Oxidations. The effects of three crop load densities (4, 6 and 8 fruit per cm2 of the cross-section of each tree branch, BCSA) on fruit growth, yield, fruit quality and vegetative growth were studied in apples (Malus × domestica Borkh) Ultrared Gala/MM111, from the fourth leaf (2006–2007 season) to the sixth (2008–2009 season). The maximum fruit growth rate was reached between 90 and 108 days after full bloom (DAFB), with values above 2.6 g day−1. Accumulated yields to the sixth leaf reached 181, 157 and 123 Mg ha−1 in the high, medium and low crop loads, respectively. Mean fruit weight decreased with increasing fruit crop load but the yields of fruit weight over 194 g were similar in all crop loads; the highest crop load exceeded the lowest crop load by 18.8 and 27.5 Mg ha−1 of fruit weight of more than 172 and 154 g, respectively. The yields of harvested fruit exceeding 75% with red coloring did not show major differences, while fruit classified as 50–75% with red coloring were less common in the low crop load. No major differences were found at the end of the study in vegetative growth in the different seasons, nor in plant size. The reduction in mean fruit weight and in the percentage of fruit with good coloring was compensated by the increase in yields, thus not resulting in an effective reduction in the quality of the harvested fruit. The level of plant development reached with a semi-vigorous rootstock and high fruit loads allowed obtaining high fruit yield earlier and of good quality.  相似文献
