Antifungals and their use in veterinary ophthalmology.

Many variables affect the outcome of keratomycosis and systemic fungal infections in animals. These include pathogenicity of the fungal organism(toxins, trophisms, and evasion of host response); previous treatment with topical or systemic corticosteroids, which can have a dramatic negative impact on host defense mechanisms: concurrent systemic illness or immunocompromise: severity/extent of infection; and degree of pain (ie,increased reflex tearing dilutes topical medication) [14]. Experimental work suggests that antibiotics may occasionally exacerbate fungal infections [142],and some researchers advocate that concurrent antibiotic therapy is contraindicated in horses with yeast infections and septate fungal infections unless bacterial infection is also suspected [14]. Nevertheless, given that normal conjunctival flora often include bacteria and fungi and because care of keratomycoses often includes mixed bacterial and fungal infections, the possible dynamics (natural influences and local competition) between ocular surface microorganisms merit further investigation. There are many unanswered questions regarding the accuracy of in vitro susceptibilities and corneal concentration capabilities for antifungal topical medications [14].Inherent host resistance or other immune interactions between the patient and fungus are perhaps the most important determinants of the outcome but are currently difficult to measure or assess except by subjective clinical observation [14].     

Information needs and priorities for assessing the sensitivity of marine birds to oil spills

Our experience in developing models to predict the potential impacts of oil spills on colonially breeding marine birds has revealed some major gaps in the information available on these systems. We consider the availability of data for a variety of parameters of seabird biology that are required in modelling efforts, and assign provisional priorities to our information needs. In order to develop means of predicting the impacts of oil spills on seabirds, we suggest that colony- or site-specific information on the timing of reproduction and colony occupancy, chick growth rates and body weights, several metabolic parameters, flight speed, and food load size is of relatively low overall priority. Intermediate priority is assigned to the collection of specific data on the dynamics of oil spills, the age and breeding structure of the populations, reproductive success, foraging activity budgets and flight paths, flight costs, and the response of growing chicks to food deprivation. We suggest that studies of seabird biology should give highest priority to obtaining information on population sizes, the probability of adult death upon encountering a spill, age-specific fecundity and survivorship, the time required in foraging trips, the lag time in the response of birds to an oil spill, foraging rate as a function of resource density, and changes in the availability of resources to the birds as a consequence of oil spills.

How do hedgerows influence soil organic carbon stock in livestock‐grazed pasture?

Hedgerows have the potential to influence ecosystem function in livestock‐grazed pasture. Despite this, they are often ignored when quantifying farmland ecosystem service delivery. In this study, we assess the contribution of hedgerows to the ecosystem function of carbon (C) storage, with a particular emphasis on soil organic carbon (SOC). We measured SOC stock (kg C m^?2), on an equivalent soil mass basis, at 0–0.15 m depth in pasture adjacent to 38 hedgerows (biotic) and 16 stone walls or fences (abiotic controls) across ten farms in the county of Conwy, Wales, UK. Pasture SOC stock (~7 kg C m^?2) was similar adjacent to biotic and abiotic field boundaries, positively associated with soil moisture and negatively with soil bulk density (BD). For biotic boundaries, two further variables were significantly associated with SOC stock, distance from hedgerow (decrease in SOC stock) and slope orientation (upslope SOC stock greater than downslope). For pasture adjacent to hedgerows, a model combining the aforementioned variables (BD, soil moisture, distance from hedgerow, slope orientation) explained 78% of variation in SOC stock. This study demonstrates that whilst hedgerows do have subtle positive effects on SOC stock in adjacent pasture, SOC storage adjacent to field boundaries is influenced more by soil moisture content and BD than field boundary type.     

Venus: preliminary topographic and surface imaging results from the pioneer orbiter

Three large Venus surface features, identified previously in images obtained from Earth-based radar observations, are shown by the Pioneer Venus radar mapper to be elevated 5 to 10 kilometers above the surrounding terrain. Two of these features, one bright and the other dark, lie adjacent to each other astride the 65 degrees N parallel between longitudes 310 degrees E and 10 degrees E. The combined region forms a huge tectonically uplifted plateau, surmounted by radar-bright ridges that may have either a volcanic or tectonic origin. The third feature, located at 30 degrees N, 283 degrees E, is radar-bright and may consist of volcanic material extruded along a fault zone. A first radar-scattering image, compiled from data obtained by the mapper in its imaging mode, shows a region north of the equator; several circular depressions seen in this area may result from meteoritic impact.
