Effect of Stocking Density on Growth,Survival, and Condition of the Mexican Cichlid Cichlasoma beani

The Mexican cichlid Cichlasoma beani is currently exploited regionally as food and can be commercialized in the aquarium trade. Natural populations of C. beani may already be negatively affected by anthropogenic alteration of the areas in which it is distributed. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect on growth, survival, and condition of C. beani cultured in three stocking densities: three (D3), six (D6), and nine (D9) fish per each 40 L tank. At the end of a 6‐wk trial the fish cultured in D3 were longer, heavier, and grew faster than the rest of the treatments but their survival was the lowest compared to D6 and D9. The mortalities were caused by a strong aggressive behavior in D3.

Retracted: Effect of Post‐Thaw Storage Time on Motility and Fertility of Cryopreserved Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso) Sperm

The aim of this study was to test the influence of post ‐ thaw storage time on the duration of sperm motility, percentage of motile sperm, and fertilization and hatching rates of fresh sperm and sperm stored for 0, 30 and 60 min at 4°C post‐thawing. After being frozen in liquid nitrogen and then thawed, the percentage of motile sperm and duration of motility were not affected by 30 min of storage at 4°C, whereas a significant decline in these parameters was observed after 60 min of storage. Similarly, fertilization and hatching rates were significantly affected within 60 min of storage at 4°C, and the fertility of frozen‐thawed sperm was significantly lower than that of fresh sperm. We conclude that cryopreserved sperm of beluga sturgeon could be stored for 30 min without the loss of sperm quality. This described procedure for beluga sturgeon cryopreservation is reliable and efficient and therefore can be recommended for hatchery practice after scaling up this technique.     

Rhodococcus equi-associated osteomyelitis in foals

Two cases of Rhodococcus equl infection in foals are described, in which osteomyelitis was a feature. Because rhodococcal infection is usually low grade and chronic, and because the signs of early metaphysitis can be subtle, any articular or periarticular swelling in a foal from a farm with a history of rhodococcosis should be strongly suspected to be associated with R equl until proven otherwise.     

Surface loading effect on Cd and Zn sorption by kaolinite and montmorillonite from low concentration solutions

Studies of Cd and Zn sorption using Na-saturated kaolinite and montmorillonite, and low metal solution concentrations similar to those found in the environment, showed that metal sorption affinity (measured by K _d values) decreased markedly with increasing surface metal loading for both layer silicates. For equilibrium solution concentrations <0.1 μmol L^?1 for Cd, and < 1 μmol L^?1 for Zn, both metals were sorbed with greater affinity by kaolinite than montmorillonite. These results were probably due to the higher proportion of weakly acidic edge sites present on kaolinite surfaces. In the case of Zn there was an affinity reversal for equilibrium solution concentrations > 1 μmol L^?1, which was attributed to the permanent charge sites of montmorillonite. Cadmium ions were sorbed, by kaolinite, with greater affinity than Zn for equilibrium solution concentrations between 0.3 to 1.5 μmol L^?1. This result was attributed to retention of these metal ions through electrostatic attraction by permanent charge sites present on the kaolinite used in this work. According of these results it seems that metal sorption by these layer silicates involves predominantly edge weak acid sites at lower surface coverages (higher affinity sites), and permanent charge sites at higher metal coverages (lower affinity sites). It was concluded that Cd and Zn sorption by those two layer silicates is greatly influenced by surface metal coverage, and results cannot be extrapolated from low to high surface coverages, and viceversa.     

Detection of antibody in rams with contagious epididymitis, using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, using whole-cell and sonicated antigens prepared from Brucella ovis, Actinobacillus seminis, and Actinobacillus seminis-like cultures isolated from rams in Wyoming, was able to detect antibody to these antigens in rams with epididymitis. The whole-cell antigens used in this procedure gave lower background values, compared with those of the sonicated antigens. The procedure was able to detect antibody in rams before clinical signs of epididymitis became apparent.
