OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for successful surgical management of dogs with atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS). DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 46 dogs managed surgically for AAS. PROCEDURE: Age at onset of clinical abnormalities, duration of clinical abnormalities prior to surgery, radiographic appearance of the dens, type (dorsal or ventral procedure) and number (1 or 2) of surgeries performed, grade of postoperative atlantoaxial joint reduction, and neurologic status prior to surgery (preoperative), when dogs were discharged from the hospital (postoperative), and during a follow-up evaluation (final) were obtained from the dogs' medical records. Risk factors for surgical success and degree of neurologic improvement were identified and analyzed for predictive potential. RESULTS: Age at onset of clinical abnormalities < or = 24 months was significantly associated with greater odds of a successful first surgery and final outcome and a lower postoperative neurologic grade. Duration of clinical abnormalities < or = 10 months was significantly associated with greater odds of a successful final outcome and a lower final neurologic grade. A preoperative neurologic grade of 1 or 2 was significantly associated with a lower final neurologic grade. Potential risk factors that did not affect odds of a successful outcome included type of surgery performed, grade of atlantoaxial joint reduction, radiographic appearance of the dens, or need for a second surgery. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Age at onset of clinical abnormalities, duration of clinical abnormalities prior to surgery, and preoperative neurologic status are risk factors for success of surgical management of AAS in dogs.  相似文献

Longitudinal infection data on Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) was collected on three dairy farms in Northeastern United States during approximately 10 years. Precise data on animal characteristics and animal location within farm were collected on these farms. Cows were followed over time with regard to MAP status during biannual fecal and serum sampling and quarterly serum sampling. Approximately 13 000 serum samples, 6500 fecal samples and 2000 tissue samples were collected during these years. Prevalence of positive samples was 1.4% for serological samples, 2.2% in fecal samples and 16.7% in tissue samples. Infection dynamics of MAP was studied and resulted in a number of potential changes in our understanding of MAP infection dynamics. First, a high prevalence of MAP infection was observed in these herds due to lifetime follow up of cows, including slaughter. Second, two distinctly different infection patterns were observed, so called non-progressors and progressors. Non-progressors were characterized by intermittent and low shedding of MAP bacteria and a virtual absence of a humoral immune response. Progressors were characterized by continuous and progressive shedding and a clearly detectable and progressive humoral immune response. Strain typing of MAP isolates on the three farms identified on two of three farms a dominant strain type, indicating that some strains are more successful in terms of transmission and infection progression. Continuous high quality longitudinal data collection turned out to be an essential tool in our understanding of pathobiology and epidemiology of MAP infections in dairy herds.  相似文献

Summary The weighted least squares (WLS) procedure has been widely used in the analysis of generation means in biometrical genetics. Two methods to carry out the analysis have been presented in the literature (Mather & Jinks, 1971; Rowe & Alexander, 1980). Neither method identified the factors that need to be taken into account when deciding which procedure to use. This paper examines the fitting of the additive-dominance model using the general principles of least squares analysis and presents the statistical basis of each procedure. Mather & Jink's method, which is more realistic according to genetic theory, is based on the assumption that the populations have nonhomogeneous variances. Rowe & Alexander's method is based on the assumption that the populations have homogeneous variances. In the latter case, there is actually no need to do a WLS analysis. The ordinary least square analysis using the original observations rather than the means, will produce the regression parameter estimates.  相似文献

Two split-plot designed experiments were conducted to determine the effects of breed (Angus, A, or Brangus, B) and diet (fescue hay, FH; corn silage, CS; or concentrate) on composition and rate of growth, diet digestibility and plasma hormones of steers. In Exp. 1, 10 steers (five of each breed) were fed a CS-based diet followed by a FH-based diet for two consecutive 60-d periods. Both breeds had lower (P less than .01) DM intake and digestibility when fed FH than when fed CS diets. The B steers had higher (P less than .01) plasma insulin concentrations than A steers when fed the CS diet. In Exp. 2, during two consecutive years, 10 steers previously fed CS- and FH-based diets were finished with a corn silage-whole shelled corn-based diet. During yr 1, A steers had higher (P less than .01) DM intake and plasma triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) concentrations (P less than .05) than B steers did. Although final weights were similar (P greater than .10), A steers had heavier (P less than .05) carcass weights than B steers did. During yr 2, A steers had higher (P less than .07) DM and starch digestibilities and higher (P less than .01) plasma T4 concentrations than B steers did. The greater (P less than .01) energetic efficiency of A steers was attributed to the greater rates of fat deposition during yr 2. Regardless of type of diet fed, A steers were more efficient at depositing energy. Higher circulating T4 concentrations of A than B steers may explain some of the physiological differences between these breeds.  相似文献

Using reproduction parameters as indicators for cattle welfare has limitations and, at best, these parameters should only be viewed as indirect indicators of welfare. On a farm level, measures such as fertility rates emphasize biological performance of the herd but fail to consider the welfare of individual animals. Even on an individual level, the relationship between reproductive effectiveness and animal welfare is complex. Good reproductive performance does not automatically signify good welfare, as domestication and targeted breeding programmes have led to prioritization of high productive and reproductive performance in most modern farm animal species. In this review, we synthesize literature regarding cattle husbandry, reproduction, welfare and their multidimensional relationships. We argue that practices such as artificial insemination or the use of sexed semen may provide potential welfare advantages as these practices reduce the risk of disease transmission and injury or enable selection of specific beneficial traits. Furthermore, they may offer a solution to current practices jeopardizing welfare, such as the management of surplus bull calves in the dairy industry. Conversely, the animals’ ability to perform natural behaviours such as oestrous expression, an aspect arguably contributing to welfare, is often limited on commercial farms; this limitation is particularly evident in housing systems such as tie stalls where movement is restricted. Moreover, common management practices such as oestrus manipulation may lead to negative attitudes in citizens who often regard naturalness as important element of animal welfare.  相似文献

Eleven products were compared for their ability to eliminate cat urine odor in carpet. Their performance on new urine spots and on old spots was compared as was their ability to prevent the return of urine odors after the carpet was cleaned. Newer products marketed to eliminate urine odor did the best in getting rid of and in preventing the return of urine smells. Other products also scored well. A few products were considered to be of little value for the removal of urine odor in carpet.  相似文献

Twelve ruminally and abomasally cannulated lambs (27 +/- 1.16 kg) and 16 intact lambs (28 +/- 1.49 kg) were used in two trials to study the influence of dairy biomass (a cheese processing wash water sludge) as a protein source in medium-concentrate diets. In Trials 1 and 2, lambs were assigned to one of three concentrate diets containing 0, 10 or 20% biomass with an additional positive control diet in Trial 2. Biomass provided 27.4 and 52.7% of the CP in 10 and 20% biomass treatments, respectively. Diets were similar in N content and were fed at 3.5% of initial BW (as fed). Apparent ruminal OM and N digestibilities were lower (P less than .10) in lambs receiving 20% biomass than in lambs fed 0 or 10% biomass. Postruminal N digestibility was higher (P less than .10) for lambs fed 20% biomass. Apparent OM and N digestibilities in both trials were reduced (P less than .10) in lambs fed 20% biomass. Apparent OM and N digestibilities in both trials were reduced (P less than .10) in lambs receiving 10% biomass compared to lambs fed other treatments. Plasma urea N concentration (mg/dl) was higher (P less than .10) at 3 and 9 h after feeding in lambs receiving 10 and 20% biomass compared with control lambs. Although N retention was unchanged, fecal N excretion was higher (P less than .10) and urinary N excretion was lower (P less than .10) in lambs consuming 10 and 20% biomass treatments. Non-ammonia N and feed N flow (g/d) were higher (P less than .10) in abomasal contents of lambs consuming 20% biomass vs other dietary treatments but N digestibility was decreased. In conclusion, digestibility was decreased and site of N digestion was altered by feeding biomass.  相似文献

Twelve ruminally, duodenally, and ileally-cannulated Hereford heifers (average initial BW 313 +/- 20 kg) were used in a replicated experiment to evaluate dairy food processing wash water solids (WWS) as a protein source. Heifers were fed 2.8 kg of chopped (7.6 cm) hay and one of three supplements (1.5 kg/d, DM basis). Supplements were formulated to be similar in energy and contained 1.0 (control), 23.2 (WWS), and 21.6% (soybean meal; SBM) CP on an OM basis. Total N and nonammonia N entering the duodenum (g/d) were greater (P less than .10) for heifers fed WWS and SBM supplements than for controls. Bacterial N flow (g/d) at the duodenum was less (P less than .10) for controls (43.9) than for WWS- (63.9) and SBM- (69.9) supplemented heifers. Feed escape N (g/d) was greater (P less than .10) for WWS-fed heifers than for those fed SBM (32.1 vs 20.7 g/d, respectively). Total tract N digestion (g/d) was greatest (P less than .10) for SBM, intermediate for WWS, and least for control heifers. Microbial protein synthesis (g/kg of OM intake) was enhanced (P less than .10) by WWS and SBM supplementation, but efficiency of synthesis (g/kg of OM fermented) did not differ among treatments. Essential amino acid (AA) disappearance in the small intestine (g/d) was less (P less than .10) for control than for the other two treatments.
