AIM: To assess the benefit of inducing emesis in dogs that have ingested rodenticide bait containing brodifacoum (BDF), by determining the amount of BDF in bait recovered from the vomitus relative to the estimated amount consumed.

METHODS: Between 2014 and 2015 samples of vomitus from seven dogs that ingested rodenticide baits containing BDF were submitted by veterinarians in New Zealand. All seven dogs had been given apomorphine by the veterinarian and vomited within 1 hour of ingesting the bait. Some or all of the bait particles were retrieved from each sample and were analysed for concentrations of BDF using HPLC. Based on estimations of the mass of bait consumed, the concentration of BDF stated on the product label, and the estimated mass of bait in the vomitus of each dog, the amount of BDF in the vomited bait was calculated as a percentage of the amount ingested.

RESULTS: For five dogs an estimation of the mass of bait ingested was provided by the submitting veterinarian. For these dogs the estimated percentage of BDF in the bait retrieved from the vomitus was between 10–77%. All dogs were well after discharge but only one dog returned for further testing. This dog had a normal prothrombin time 3 days after ingestion.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The induction of emesis within 1 hour of ingestion can be a useful tool in reducing the exposure of dogs to a toxic dose of BDF. The BDF was not fully absorbed within 1 hour of ingestion suggesting that the early induction of emesis can remove bait containing BDF before it can be fully absorbed.  相似文献

The effects of no‐till versus conventional farming practices were evaluated on soft wheat functional and nutritional characteristics, including kernel physical properties, whole wheat composition, antioxidant activity, and end‐product quality. Soft white winter wheat cultivar ORCF 102 was evaluated over a two‐year period from three long‐term replicated no‐till versus conventional tillage studies in Oregon. Wheat from the no‐till cropping systems generally had greater test weight, kernel diameter, and kernel weight and had softer kernels compared with wheat from the conventional tillage systems. Compared with the conventional systems, no‐till whole wheat flour had lower protein and SDS sedimentation volume. Ash content as well as most minerals measured (calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc), except for manganese and phosphorus, were generally slightly lower in no‐till than in conventional wheat. Whole wheat flour from the no‐till cropping systems generally had slightly lower total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity. Milling properties, including flour yield, break flour yield, and mill score, were not affected by tillage systems. Refined flour from no‐till systems had lower protein, SDS sedimentation volume, and lactic acid and sucrose solvent retention capacities compared with flour from conventional tillage. No‐till wheat generally had greater sugar‐snap cookie diameter than conventionally tilled wheat. In conclusion, no‐till soft white winter wheat generally had slightly reduced nutritional properties (protein, ash, most minerals, and total antioxidant content) compared with wheat from conventionally tilled systems, and it had equivalent or sometimes superior functional properties for baking cookie‐type products.  相似文献

以植物叶蛋白浓缩物为材料,用胰蛋白酶在不同条件下对其进行水解。结果表明,胰蛋白酶作用于植物叶蛋白,其最佳水解温度为40℃;最佳水解pH值为9;水解程度随酶量和反应时间增加而增加;各种不同种类的植物叶蛋白在相同条件下被胰蛋白酶水解的程度基本一致,证明了植物叶蛋白易被动物体内蛋白酶分解。  相似文献

Variations in physical and compositional bran characteristics among different sources and classes of wheat and their association with bread‐baking quality of whole grain wheat flour (WWF) were investigated with bran obtained from Quadrumat milling of 12 U.S. wheat varieties and Bühler milling of six Korean wheat varieties. Bran was characterized for composition including protein, fat, ash, dietary fiber, phenolics, and phytate. U.S. soft and club wheat brans were lower in insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) and phytate content (40.7–44.7% and 10.3–17.1 mg of phytate/g of bran, respectively) compared with U.S. hard wheat bran (46.0–51.3% and 16.5–22.2 mg of phytate/g of bran, respectively). Bran of various wheat varieties was blended with a hard red spring wheat flour at a ratio of 1:4 to prepare WWFs for determination of dough properties and bread‐baking quality. WWFs with U.S. hard wheat bran generally exhibited higher dough water absorption and longer dough mixing time, and they produced smaller loaf volume of bread than WWFs of U.S. soft and club wheat bran. WWFs of two U.S. hard wheat varieties (ID3735 and Scarlet) produced much smaller loaves of bread (<573 mL) than those of other U.S. hard wheat varieties (>625 mL). IDF content, phytate content, and water retention capacity of bran exhibited significant relationships with loaf volume of WWF bread, whereas no relationship was observed between protein content of bran and loaf volume of bread. It appears that U.S. soft and club wheat bran, probably owing to relatively low IDF and phytate contents, has smaller negative effects on mixing properties of WWF dough and loaf volume of bread than U.S. hard wheat bran.  相似文献

Granular cold water gelling (GCWG) starch was obtained by treatment of native chickpea starch with liquid ammonia at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. A free‐flowing powder of the gelatinized starch granules was produced by adding ethanol to the mixture of starch and liquid ammonia. Four ratios of liquid ammonia to starch (A/S) (2:1, 4:1, 6:1 and 8:1) and four ratios of starch ethanol (S/E) (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4) were tested for production of GCWG starch. Homogenous mixtures of liquid ammonia and starch granules appeared when the A/S ratio was >4:1. Treating starch with a 4:1:3 ammonia‐starch‐ethanol (A/S/E) ratio on a w/w/v basis resulted in a free‐flowing powder of gelatinized starch, that formed a gel on addition of water at 23°C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of the GCWG starch, regardless of A/S/E ratio, displayed enthalpy values of 2.2–3.1 J/g compared with 15.5 J/g for native starch, indicating disappearance of crystallinity due to modification.  相似文献

The highly variable environmental conditions across the Pacific Northwest (PNW) influence the milling and baking quality of wheat grain produced in this region. This study was conducted to compare the flour composition, dough rheology, and baking quality of soft and hard spring wheat grain produced in diverse environments. Thirteen soft and five hard spring wheat cultivars were grown at Lind, WA (semiarid) and Fairfield, WA (high precipitation) for three years. Grain was evaluated for flour composition, rheology, and experimental baked product quality. Flour composition, rheological properties, and baking qualities were primarily influenced by the environment. Protein contents, microSDS values, and water absorption levels were significantly (P < 0.0001) higher for all cultivars grown at Lind compared with those from Fairfield. Cookie diameters were larger (P < 0.0001) for soft flours from Fairfield, whereas loaf volumes were higher (P < 0.0001) for hard wheat flours from Lind. Results indicate that producing soft or hard wheat outside of its optimal climatic zone reduces experimental baked product quality.  相似文献

Amylose contents of prime starches from nonwaxy and high-amylose barley, determined by colorimetric method, were 24.6 and 48.7%, respectively, whereas waxy starch contained only a trace (0.04%) of amylose. There was little difference in isoamylase-debranched amylopectin between nonwaxy and high-amylose barley, whereas amylopectin from waxy barley had a significantly higher percentage of fraction with degree of polymerization < 15 (45%). The X-ray diffraction pattern of waxy starch differed from nonwaxy and high-amylose starches. Waxy starch had sharper peaks at 0.58, 0.51, 0.49, and 0.38 nm than nonwaxy and high-amylose starches. The d-spacing at 0.44 nm, characterizing the amylose-lipids complex, was most evident for high-amylose starch and was not observed in waxy starch. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of prime starch from nonwaxy and high-amylose barley exhibited two prominent transition peaks: the first was >60°C and corresponded to starch gelatinization; the second was >100°C and corresponded to the amylose-lipid complex. Starch from waxy barley had only one endothermic gelatinization peak of amylopectin with an enthalpy value of 16.0 J/g. The retrogradation of gelatinized starch of three types of barley stored at 4°C showed that amylopectin recrystallization rates of nonwaxy and high-amylose barley were comparable when recrystallization enthalpy was calculated based on the percentage of amylopectin. No amylopectin recrystallization peak was observed in waxy barley. Storage time had a strong influence on recrystallization of amylopectin. The enthalpy value for nonwaxy barley increased from 1.93 J/g after 24 hr of storage to 3.74 J/g after 120 hr. When gel was rescanned every 24 hr, a significant decrease in enthalpy was recorded. A highly statistically significant correlation (r = 0.991) between DSC values of retrograded starch of nonwaxy barley and gel hardness was obtained. The correlation between starch enthalpy value and gel hardness of starch concentrate indicates that gel texture is due mainly to its starch structure and functionality. The relationship between the properties of starch and starch concentrate may favor the application of barley starch concentrate without the necessity of using the wet fractionation process.  相似文献

Double‐null partial waxy wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) flours were used for isolation of starch and preparation of white salted noodles and pan bread. Starch characteristics, textural properties of cooked noodles, and staling properties of bread during storage were determined and compared with those of wheat flours with regular amylose content. Starches isolated from double‐null partial waxy wheat flours contained 15.4–18.9% amylose and exhibited higher peak viscosity than starches of single‐null partial waxy and regular wheat flours, which contained 22.7–25.8% amylose. Despite higher protein content, double‐null partial waxy wheat flours, produced softer, more cohesive and less adhesive noodles than soft white wheat flours. With incorporation of partial waxy prime starches, noodles produced from reconstituted soft white wheat flours became softer, less adhesive, and more cohesive, indicating that partial waxy starches of low amylose content are responsible for the improvement of cooked white salted noodle texture. Partial waxy wheat flours with >15.1% protein produced bread of larger loaf volume and softer bread crumb even after storage than did the hard red spring wheat flour of 15.3% protein. Regardless of whether malt was used, bread baked from double‐null partial waxy wheat flours exhibited a slower firming rate during storage than bread baked from HRS wheat flour.  相似文献
