Animal models for human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections

Since its detection in 2001 the human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, was observed to be a serious pathogen in human respiratory infections during childhood. Meanwhile, several animal models have been established to study the virus-host interactions and pathogenic effects. Mainly, small laboratory animals like mice and cotton rats have been used, although the usage of these two species for HMPV research is controversially discussed and contradictious results were obtained by different groups. Further trials with ferrets, hamsters and non human primates were performed revealing different success in their individual usage. In this review we present the different animal models, summarize their advantages and disadvantages, and discuss the controversial results from different studies.     

Plasma and urine responses are lower for acylated vs nonacylated anthocyanins from raw and cooked purple carrots

The bioavailability of acylated vs nonacylated anthocyanins and the effect of cooking and dose on the comparative bioavailability were investigated in a clinical feeding study using purple carrots as the anthocyanin source. Treatments were purple carrots as follows: 250 g raw (463 micromol of anthocyanins: 400 micromol acylated, 63 micromol nonacylated), 250 g cooked (357 micromol of anthocyanins: 308.5 micromol acylated, 48.5 micromol nonacylated), and 500 g cooked (714 micromol of anthocyanins: 617 micromol acylated, 97 micromol nonacylated). Four of the five carrot anthocyanins were found intact in plasma by 30 min after carrot consumption and peaked between 1.5 and 2.5 h. Acylation of anthocyanins resulted in an 11-14-fold decrease in anthocyanin recovery in urine and an 8-10-fold decrease in anthocyanin recovery in plasma. Cooking increased the recovery of nonacylated anthocyanins but not acylated anthocyanins. Large dose size significantly reduced recovery of both acylated and nonacylated anthocyanins, suggesting saturation of absorption mechanisms.     

番茄采摘机器人机械臂避障路径规划

以关节型机械臂避开垂直茎秆或撑杆采摘番茄为研究对象,提出了一种基于构形空间的关节型机械臂避障路径规划方法.利用空间映射原理,将关节型机械臂工作空间的三维避障问题转换为平面R-R机械臂避开障碍圆的问题,用临界碰撞关节角建立C-障碍空间的映射计算模型,将工作空间的位置避障转换为构形空间连杆关节角的计算.以能量最优函数优选避障规划的关节终点角度,利用A*算法计算平面R-R机械臂的避障关节角路径,获得一系列表示空间连杆位置的相交竖直面,并在竖直面内进行其余关节角的规划.避障采摘番茄的试验表明,机械臂带动夹持器能成功绕过直线状障碍物,引导夹持器到达果实目标位置,证明对平面R-R机械臂的空间映射建模是正确的,验证了提出的避障路径规划方法是可行的,可以应用于番茄的自动收获.     

Tenosynovitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath and annular ligament constriction syndrome caused by longitudinal tears in the deep digital flexor tendon: a clinical and surgical report of 17 cases in warmblood horses

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Inflammation of the digital flexor tendon sheaths is a chronic and nebulous condition often unresponsive to medical and surgical treatment. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence of longitudinal tears (LT) as the underlying cause of chronic tenosynovitis and annular ligament constriction syndrome (ALCS) in warmblood horses. METHODS: The records of 25 horses with chronic tenosynovitis and ALCS in which tenoscopical inspection of the digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) was performed between 1999-2000 were reviewed. Of 25 horses, 17 were diagnosed with an LT in the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). All horses had a history of distension of the DFTS and/or signs of an ALCS. All cases presented typical signs of a chronic inflamed DFTS on ultrasonography and 11 horses showed ultrasonographic changes (echogenic material or an irregular outlining) at the lateral or medial border of the DDFT. The diagnosis of LTs of the DDFT was established in all cases by tenoscopy. Surgical treatment consisted of removal of the torn collagen fibrils using a mechanical resector and decompressing the fetlock canal by a transection of the palmar annular ligament (PAL) using a hook knife under tenoscopic control. RESULTS: Ten horses became sound and resumed their previous level of work, 3 horses remained lame, 4 horses returned to previous level of work but needed intrasynovial treatment of the DFTS and reduced competition frequency to remain sound. CONCLUSIONS: Horses presented with chronic inflamed DFTS and/or ALCS might suffer from LTs in the DDFT; however, the diagnosis cannot be established with absolute certainty using only ultrasonography. Longitudinal tears should be suspected if ultrasonographic changes are present lateral or medial to the border of the DDFT but tenoscopical examination of the tendon sheath is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The presence of these LTs might explain why some cases of chronic tenosynovitis of the digital flexor tendon sheath and/or ALCS do not respond on surgical transection of the PAL alone without tenoscopy.     

Effect of short-chain fatty acids on contraction of smooth muscle in the canine colon

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) on canine colonic smooth muscle. SAMPLE POPULATION: Colonic tissue obtained from 14 healthy dogs. PROCEDURE: Short-chain fatty acid (SCFA; acetate, propionate, and butyrate; 1 to 100 mmol/L)-induced contractions were compared with responses obtained with acetylmethylcholine (AMCh; 10(-4) mol/L). Roles of enteric neurons, cholinergic receptors, calcium stores in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and extracellular calcium in the SCFA-induced responses were investigated by incubating muscle strips with tetrodotoxin (1 micromol/L), atropine (1 micromol/L), ryanodine (10 micromol/L), nifedipine (1 micromol/L), ethylene glycol-bis (beta-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetra-acetate (EGTA; 0.1 mmol/L), or an extracellular calcium-depleted (zero extracellular calcium) solution prior to the addition of propionate or butyrate. RESULTS: Incubation with SCFA elicited isometric stress responses (0.25 to 2.15 x 10(4) N/m2) in colonic longitudinal smooth muscle. Maximal responses to butyrate and propionate (50 mmol/L) were 37 and 23%, respectively, of the maximal AMCh response. Acetate was least effective in stimulating contractile responses. Tetrodotoxin and atropine did not affect SCFA-induced contractions. Nifedipine and zero extracellular calcium solution abolished responses to butyrate and propionate, whereas EGTA attenuated (> 60%) but did not abolish those responses. Ryanodine did not affect SCFA-induced contractile responses. The SCFA did not affect colonic circular smooth muscle. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RESPONSE: The SCFA stimulate longitudinal but not circular colonic smooth muscle contractions via a direct effect on smooth muscle. The mechanism of the SCFA effect appears to involve the influx of extracellular calcium. These findings may account for some of the effects of fiber on canine colonic motility [corrected].     

Plasma glucose-insulin relationship in chicken lines selected for high or low fasting glycaemia

1. Selected Fat or Lean chickens differ in their plasma glucose insulin relationship: in the fed or fasted state, Fat chickens have a lower glycaemia associated with normal or higher insulinaemia, depending upon the difference in glycaemia. 2. Conversely, chickens selected for low fasting glycaemia (LG) are fattier than their counterparts selected for high fasting glycaemia (HG), although the divergence in fat content is lower than in the Fat-Lean model. 3. The plasma glucose insulin relationship has been investigated in males of the HG and LG lines in the F4 and F5 generations. 4. A difference in glycaemia is suggested during embryonic development and was present at hatching and later on in the fasted or the fed state; insulinaemia did not differ. 5. During refeeding after an overnight fast, glycaemia differed between lines (except at intermediate times); cumulative food intake and insulinaemia were similar. 6. During a glucose tolerance test, glucose disposal rate and insulinaemia were rather similar. 7. Exogenous insulin exerted a very similar hypoglycaemic effect in both lines. 8. Other variables (body temperature, plasma concentrations of potassium and alpha NH2-non protein nitrogen) did not differ between HG and LG chickens. 9. In conclusion, HG and LG chickens do not exhibit any differences in glucose disposal rate, insulinaemia (in various nutritional conditions) or sensitivity to exogenous insulin, which contrasts with Fat or Lean chickens and may explain why HG and LG chickens have diverged to a lesser extent in fat content.

Cytotoxic pentacyclic triterpenes from Combretum nigricans

A new pentacyclic triterpene, 11alpha-acetoxy-20,24-epoxy-25-hydroxy-dammar-3-one (1), has been isolated from the African tree Combretum nigricans, together with the known corresponding diol, 20,24-epoxy-11alpha, 25-dihydroxy-dammar-3-one (2). They are responsible, at least in part, for the cytotoxic activity of the methanolic extract of the plant.

<正> 家畜日食量的研究,国内对牧区绵羊、牦牛、马开展较多,而对半农半牧区、农区的草食家畜日食量(特别是在放牧条件下)的研究报导很少。为此,1981年9月至12月、1982年3月至5月,我们先后在四川汶川、大邑等县进行了草食家畜日食量及其对牧草喜食性的观测,现将成都麻羊资料整理如下,供进一步研究参考。
