To examine the effectiveness of long rotation forestry and the potential of complete utilization of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carriere), we designed a tensile test using the lumber from six 87-year-old sample trees. Results showed that strength properties of lumber varied greatly in the radial direction within trees, but all sample trees showed a similar trend. There was little difference in dynamic Young's modulus but a large difference in tensile strength (TS) between the lumber and small clear specimens from undestroyed parts of the lumber. These differences decreased with an increase in ring number and became constant after 30 years. The presence and distribution of knots markedly affected the TS; and among the knot indices, the knot number (Kn) and knot area ratio of a maximum single knot (Km) proved to be effective for explaining the effect of knots. The distribution of Kn and Km in the radial direction agreed with the variation of TS in the radial direction. By investigating the variation patterns of lumber and small clear specimens in the radial direction, it was found that the strength properties of both required a long time, about 30 years, to reach a relatively constant state.Part of this report was presented at the 49th annual meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Tokyo, April 1999 相似文献

The object of the present study was to investigate the validation of the sperm quality analyzer (SQA) and the hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) test with standard sperm analysis methods in frozen-thawed ram and minke whale spermatozoa. In rams, highly significant correlations were observed in the percentage of motile spermatozoa (P<0.01) and sperm concentration (P<0.01) between the standard and SQA methods. But, the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa did not significantly correlate between the standard and SQA methods. The percentages of swollen spermatozoa at 15 minutes by the HOS test were significantly correlated with the motility by the standard (P<0.05) and by the SQA (P<0.05) methods. For minke whale spermatozoa, the SVI (sperm viability index) values by the standard method were significantly (P<0.001) correlated with the sperm motility index (SMI) values by SQA. The percentage of motile spermatozoa was also significantly correlated (P<0.01) with the motility measured by SQA. Using different hypo-osmotic solutions and incubation times, the HOS test with 25, 100 and 150 mOsM did not show significant variations. Motility observed by the standard method and the percentage of swollen spermatozoa were significantly correlated (P<0.05). These results indicate that the SQA and HOS test can be utilized to assess the post-thawing motility of ram and minke whale spermatozoa, and that the SQA and HOS test values are significantly correlated in ram spermatozoa. However, sperm concentration and morphologically normal spermatozoa are not assessed accurately by SQA in minke whales. 相似文献

The electrophysiological actions of various neonicotinoids, including substituted benzyl derivatives, against recombinant Drosophila SAD/chicken beta2 hybrid nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) were measured to analyze the relationships between the in vivo (insecticidal) and in vitro (binding and agonist) activities. Most of the neonicotinoids tested were capable of inducing inward currents by activating the hybrid nAChRs expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, whereas some compounds had no agonist activity and only blocked the acetylcholine-induced currents. Variations in the agonist activity were well correlated with those in the binding potency evaluated using [3H]imidacloprid as well as insecticidal activities. 相似文献

Boiled muscle extracts obtained from yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata and bastard halibut Paralichthys olivaceus were treated with two kinds of purified enzymes (acid phosphatase and glutamate decarboxylase), and the change in contents
of nucleotides, related compounds, and free amino acids was examined. The change in taste qualities was also investigated
by a taste test. The enzyme treatment resulted in a marked decrease in the contents of such umami substances as inosine 5′-monophosphate
(IMP) and glutamic acid (Glu). The taste test revealed that the treatment of these fish muscle extracts with both or either
of the enzymes caused a sharp decrease in umami intensity and also an increase in sourness but not a change in pH. The treatment
also effected marked decreases in thickness and overall taste intensity. These findings suggest that IMP and Glu function
not only to intensify the thickness and overall taste as well as the umami, but also to repress the sourness sensation elicited

ABSTRACT: It is suspected that the proteolytic breakdown of extracellular matrix proteins is responsible for the postmortem tenderization of fish muscle during chilled storage. In order to identify the type(s) of proteinases involved in this phenomenon, the effect of proteinase inhibitors, EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid), 1,10-phenanthroline, ρ-APMSF [(ρ-amidinophenyl) methanesulfonyl fluoride hydrochloride] and E-64 [ L - trans -epoxysuccinyl-leucylamido-(4-guanidinobutane)] on tenderization was investigated by using Japanese flounder. Proteinase inhibitor solution was injected into a blood vessel in a caudal portion of live flounder and the firmness of muscle was then evaluated as a shear force value at 0 h and 6 h after death. Metalloproteinase inhibitors, EDTA and 1,10-phenanthroline, significantly suppressed postmortem tenderization. These findings suggest that metalloproteinases are candidates for proteinases involved in the postmortem tenderization of fish muscles. Although not significantly, p -APMSF, a serine proteinase inhibitor, partially suppressed muscle tenderization, which suggests that serine proteinases are also implicated in postmortem tenderization. A cysteine proteinase inhibitor, E-64, showed no effect, suggesting that cysteine proteinases are not involved. 相似文献

An analysis was performed on the climatic responses of the radial growth of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. on contrasting north-facing and south-facing slopes in Tura, central Siberia. We developed chronologies of
tree-ring width for four plots, designated as north-upper, northlower, south-upper, and south-lower. Both residual and standard
chronologies of tree-ring widths exhibited a significant positive correlation with temperature from the end of May until early
June in all four plots. The chronologies of ring width did not reveal any major difference in the response to temperature
among the four plots. The standard chronologies of ring widths on the north-facing slope were negatively correlated with precipitation
during the winter (October–April) and in early and mid-May, whereas the residual chronologies did not reveal clear relationships
with precipitation during the winter and May. The significant correlation between ring width and temperature from the end
of May until early June indicates that temperatures in springtime play a significant role in the radial growth of L. gmelinii. The negative correlations between standard chronologies of tree-ring width and precipitation in the winter and in May on
the north-facing slope indicate that lowfrequency fluctuations in snowfall have negative effects on the radial growth. However,
these effects vary and depend on the microscale topography.
