Projections indicate that large increases in emissions may occur in developing countries during the next twenty to fifty years if current development patterns persist. This paper describes the development of co-operation regarding air pollution issues in three sub-regions of three continents. Experiences gained through activities within a programme on Regional Air Pollution in Developing Countries are used to illustrate progress. The sub-regional process in South Asia developed through a series of meetings that led to the Malé Declaration. In southern Africa a policy dialogue led to the Harare Resolution targeted towards progress in the SADC region. A policy dialogue in Buenos Aires concentrated on issues related to regional harmonisation of legal frameworks in the Mercosur region. In all regions the link between scientific information required to support decision making has been emphasised. The sub-regional policy processes are analysed in relation to availability of required scientific information and compared to the process that led to protocol development in Europe.  相似文献

For both governmental agencies and industry, considerable advantages, especially from extrapolation of data within a country or between countries, can be derived from co-ordinated action in the efficacy testing of new compounds. This has been recognized at an early stage in Europe, i.e. by France (1952) and the Federal Republic of Germany, where methods have been devised in a common agreement between official services and pesticide manufacturers. The European Weed Research Council started work for international alignment on herbicide testing, whereas EPPO, in 1971, initiated collaborative studies on rodents1) (5 methods), fungi (5 methods), insects and mites (10 methods). These guide-lines, having been approved by the 35 EPPO Governments, are already published or will be published in the near future; a further 29 methods are presently under study. Since 197, contacts have been taken with the American Society for Testing and Materials in order to reach inter-regional agreement on testing methods.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies were used to develop a double antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) antigen in fecal samples. The assay was specific for the hemagglutinating protein of CPV and detected as little as 1.5 ng of virus within a 15-minute incubation period. The use of monoclonal antibodies against 2 epitopes on the CPV antigen permitted the simultaneous addition of test sample and enzyme-conjugated antibody, thus considerably simplifying the manipulations required for the assay. Results were visually determined without special instrumentation. Clinical studies revealed greater than 95% correlation between enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results and hemagglutination titers.  相似文献

Cercospora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Cercospora beticola, is a major fungal sugar beet disease worldwide and the cause of significant yield losses. The disease is most successfully countered by the introduction of genetic tolerance into elite sugar beet hybrids. To this end, breeding programmes require high quality biological assays allowing discrimination of minor differences between plants within a segregating population. This study describes the successful implementation of image analysis software in the bioassays for quantification of necrotic lesions at different stages of C. beticola infection, allowing selection on minor phenotypic differences during the sugar beet breeding process for C. beticola resistance. In addition, a real‐time PCR assay was developed for the quantification of C. beticola pathogen biomass in infected beet canopy. The use of both techniques, even in an early stage of infection, fine‐tunes current bioassays, allowing more accurate and efficient selection of resistant breeding material.  相似文献

Colibacillosis results from infection with avian pathogenic Escherichia coli bacteria. Healthy broilers are resistant to inhaled E. coli, but previous infection with vaccine or virulent strains of Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) predisposes birds for severe colibacillosis. We investigated whether IBV affects recruitment and function of phagocytic cells and examined NO production, phagocytic and bactericidal activity, and kinetics of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and splenocytes. Moreover, we measured cytokine mRNA expression in lung and spleen samples. Broilers were inoculated with IBV H120 vaccine or virulent M41 and challenged 5 days later with E. coli 506. A PBS control and E. coli group without previous virus inoculation were also included. Birds were sacrificed at various time points after inoculation (h/dpi). Inoculation with IBV induced extended and more severe colibacillosis than with E. coli alone. At 4dpi, the number of KUL-01(+) PBMC in all E. coli-inoculated groups was significantly higher than in PBS-inoculated birds, which correlated with lesion scores. From 1 to 4dpi, NO production by PBMC from all E. coli-inoculated animals was elevated compared to PBS birds. Bactericidal activity of PBMC in IBV-inoculated animals at 7dpi was lower than in PBS- and E. coli-inoculated birds, but phagocytic capacity and recruitment were not severely impaired. In spleen samples of IBV-infected animals reduced expression of IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-18 and IFN-gamma mRNA was found 1dpi. Our results suggest that enhanced colibacillosis after IBV infection or vaccination is caused at least by altered innate immunity and less by impairment of phagocytic cell function.  相似文献

Evaluation of economic returns resulting from plant protection measures are receiving increased attention. Since control measures are likely to affect not only a single production but also future crops and may entail resistance phenomena, as well as other inconveniences, the entire lifetime of a control strategy should be considered in a cost/benefit analysis. Although all the needed parameters for such an evaluation are not available, simplified computer-based models, now in use in advanced pest management studies, turned out to beextremely useful. The possibility of assessing the impact of control measures on single crops is reviewed in the light of recent studies (Headley , 1972, 1973, Davidson and Norgaard , 1973) and data stressing the economic advantages of pest management schemes in European orchards and U.S. cotton areas are studied. With increased prices for pesticides and application, the benefit derived from integrated control schemes becomes more evident.  相似文献

Antimicrobial‐resistant bacteria represent an important concern impacting both veterinary medicine and public health. The rising prevalence of extended‐spectrum beta‐lactamase (ESBL), AmpC beta‐lactamase, carbapenemase (CRE) and fluoroquinolone‐resistant Enterobacteriaceae continually decreases the efficiency of clinically important antibiotics. Moreover, the potential for zoonotic transmission of antibiotic‐resistant enteric bacteria increases the risk to public health. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of specific antibiotic‐resistant bacteria on human contact surfaces in various animal environments. Environmental surface samples were collected from companion animal shelters, private equine facilities, dairy farms, livestock auction markets and livestock areas of county fairs using electrostatic cloths. Samples were screened for Enterobacteriaceae expressing AmpC, ESBL, CRE or fluoroquinolone resistance using selective media. Livestock auction markets and county fairs had higher levels of bacteria expressing both cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone resistance than did equine, dairy, and companion animal environments. Equine facilities harboured more bacteria expressing cephalosporin resistance than companion animal shelters, but less fluoroquinolone resistance. The regular use of extended‐spectrum cephalosporins in livestock populations could account for the increased levels of cephalosporin resistance in livestock environments compared to companion animal and equine facilities. Human surfaces, as well as shared human and animal surfaces, were contaminated with resistant bacteria regardless of species environment. Detecting these bacteria on common human contact surfaces suggests that the environment can serve as a reservoir for the zoonotic transmission of antibiotic‐resistant bacteria and resistance genes. Identifying interventions to lower the prevalence of antibiotic‐resistant bacteria in animal environments will protect both animal and public health.  相似文献

Plant quarantine is a part of crop protection strategies and has generally not received the scientific support it deserves neither has the usefulness of quarantine actions which are a matter of public policy been verified. Experience shows that introduction of exotic pathogenic organisms often fails in establishment because the complicated sets of biological conditions needed are not met; however, with increased frequency of introductions, the probability of meeting the right combination of circumstances increases. This is of fundamental importance in quarantine. Protecting a bio-geographical area rather than individual countries against emigrant pests and diseases is a prerequisite for a successful quarantine. It is explained how this approach is currently implemented within the EPPO area on the grounds of scientific data. A major breakthrough in evaluating the potential hazards inherent in emigrant pests has been made in the United States through mathematical modelling. Many gaps in the biological knowledge remain and there is a clear need for collaborative action on a global scale.  相似文献
