Influence of cultivation site on sesquiterpene lactone composition of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus L.)

The forage potential of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) has not been realized in southern West Virginia (WV) because ruminants are reluctant to consume the herbage. Chicory contains bitter sesquiterpene lactones that can adversely impact palatability. This study was undertaken to determine whether sesquiterpene lactone concentrations in chicory grown in southern WV differ from those in chicory grown in central Pennsylvania (PA) where chicory is grazed readily. Herbage was collected in 1997 and 1998 from cultivars Grasslands Puna (Puna), INIA le Lacerta (Lacerta), and Forage Feast established at research sites near State College, PA, and Beckley, WV. The total concentration of sesquiterpene lactones in WV-grown cultivars was 0.58% (dry matter basis) in Puna, 0.59% in Lacerta, and 0.79% in Forage Feast in 1997 and ranged from 1.03 (Lacerta) to 1.52% (Forage Feast) in 1998. In PA-grown cultivars, sesquiterpene lactones represented 0.16 (Puna), 0.18 (Lacerta), and 0.27% (Forage Feast) of the forage dry matter in 1997 and ranged from 0.32 (Lacerta) to 0.55% (Forage Feast) in 1998. Concentrations of lactucin, lactucopicrin, and total sesquiterpene lactones in Forage Feast exceeded those in the other cultivars grown at the same site. The lowest concentrations of lactucopicrin and total sesquiterpene lactones observed among WV-grown cultivars were higher (2-fold or more) than the highest concentrations present in cultivars grown the same year in PA. Mineral analyses of soils from the two cultivation sites indicate that P availability may influence sesquiterpene lactone composition of chicory herbage. Results provide a foundation for future studies of environmental effects on sesquiterpene lactone composition and palatability of chicory herbage.     

Seasonal speedup along the western flank of the Greenland Ice Sheet

It has been widely hypothesized that a warmer climate in Greenland would increase the volume of lubricating surface meltwater reaching the ice-bedrock interface, accelerating ice flow and increasing mass loss. We have assembled a data set that provides a synoptic-scale view, spanning ice-sheet to outlet-glacier flow, with which to evaluate this hypothesis. On the ice sheet, these data reveal summer speedups (50 to 100%) consistent with, but somewhat larger than, earlier observations. The relative speedup of outlet glaciers, however, is far smaller (<15%). Furthermore, the dominant seasonal influence on Jakobshavn Isbrae's flow is the calving front's annual advance and retreat. With other effects producing outlet-glacier speedups an order of magnitude larger, seasonal melt's influence on ice flow is likely confined to those regions dominated by ice-sheet flow.     

Effects of Co‐stocking Smallmouth Buffalo,Ictiobus bubalus,with Channel Catfish,Ictalurus punctatus

Proliferative gill disease (PGD) in catfish is caused by the myxozoan Henneguya ictaluri. The complex life cycle requires Dero digitata as the oligochaete host. Efforts to control PGD by eradicating D. digitata have been unsuccessful. Smallmouth buffalo, Ictiobus bubalus, (SMB) are opportunistic bottom feeders and a putative option for controlling D. digitata. In 2011, 15 ponds (0.4 ha) were stocked with 5000 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus; 7 of these 15 ponds were also stocked with 300 SMB fingerlings. There were no differences in benthic invertebrate numbers or water quality variables between ponds with or without SMB. At harvest, there were no differences in percent survival, total weight, or catfish feed conversion ratio. In the second year, 18 ponds (0.4 ha) were stocked with 6000 channel catfish. Half the ponds were also stocked with 300 SMB. Sentinel fish were used to estimate disease severity, and pond water was collected for molecular estimation of H. ictaluri actinospore concentrations. Similar to the first year, there were no differences between treatments in any variable tested, including PGD severity in sentinel fish and parasite concentrations in pond water. Under these study conditions, presence of SMB did not have a measureable effect on PGD incidence, parasite density, or overall catfish production.     

Die Bestimmung der Tiefgefriertauglichkeit von Bullensperma mit Hilfe des Objektträgertestes

Inhalt Es Wurde versucht, 276 Ejakulate von 50 Bullen der Rasse Deutsche. Fleckvich mit Hilfe eines einfachen Objekträgertestes ohne die im Ruutineverfahren üblichen Maβnahmen (Adaption, Einfrieren) auf ihre Gefriertauglichkeit zu testen. Dies erfolgte durch einen Vergleich der Auftauraten von verdünnten Spermaproben gleich nach dem Tiefgefrieren ohne Adaption auf Objektträgern und von solchen die nach 6–8stündigcr Adaption routinemäβig in Ampullen bzw. Pailletten eingefroren wurden. Die Untersuchungen führten zu folgenden Ergebnissen: 1. Die Auftaurate von Spermaproben, die ohne Adaption auf Objektträgern im Stickstoffdampf eingefroren wurden, lassen bis zu einem gewissen Grade eine Vorausbestimmung des Einfrierergebnisses und damit der Tiefgefriertauglichkeit eines Ejakulates zu. Bullen, deren Sperma im Objektträgertest ein Auftaurate von über 20% zeigt, werden als gefriertauglich, jene mit einer Spermienmotilität nach dem Auftauen der Objektträgerproben von unter 5% als gefrieruntauglich und solche, deren aufgetautes Sperma 5% bis 20 % motile Spermien aufweisen, als bedingt tauglich angesprochen. 2. Zur Beurteilung eines Bullen hinsichtliclz der Gefriertauglichkeit seines Spermas reicht die Testung von 3 Ejakulaten aus. 3. Der Objektträgertest ist leicht durchführbar und zeitsparend. Er ist für die Auswahl der Bullen hinsichtlich der Gefriertauglichkeit ihres Spermas für die Praxis allerdings nur bedingt einsatzfähig, da ein groβer Teil der Stiere doch noch routinemäβig nachgetestet werden muβ. Er bringt eindeutige Ergebnisse nur dann, wenn die Auftaurate höchstens 5% und deutlich mehr als 20 % beträgt. Contents (The determination of the suitability for deep freezing of bull semen using a slide test) . 276 ejaculates from 50 bulls of ther German Fleckvieh breed were studied for deep freezing suitability using a simple slide test without the routinely used mea.rures (adaptation, freezing). A comparison was made of the thawing rates of diluted semen samples immediately after deep-freezing without adaptation on slides and after 6–8 hours adaptntion in ampoules or paillettes. The following results were obtained: 1. The thawing rate of semen samples frozen without adaptation on slides in the vapour phase of nitrogen allow a certain degree of predetermination of the freezing result and therefore of the suitability of an ejaculate for deep freezing. Bulls whose semen shows a thawing rate of over 20% by the slide test are taken as being suitable for freezing; those with a sperm motility after the slide test of less than 5% are unsuitable; those with a sperm motility of 5–20% are considered as conditionally suitable. 2. 3 ejaculates are sufficient to test a bull for suitability of semen for deep-freezing. 3. The slide test is easy to carry out and saves time. However, for the selection of bulls on the basis of deep freezing of semen in practice it is limited, since a large proportion of bulls still have to be tested further. The test only gives unequivocal results if the thawing rate is less than 5% or more than 20%.
