Multipurpose trees, the integral components of homegardens, contribute significantly to the closed nutrient cycling processes and sustainability of the ecosystem. Although, the litter production and probable nutrient returns via litter in homegardens have been documented, quantification and characterization of the decomposition and bioelement release from the litter have received relatively little scientific attention. The objective of the present study is to explore the litter dynamics of six locally important multipurpose trees (Mangifera indica L., Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk., Anacardium occidentale L., Ailanthus triphysa Dennst., Artocarpus hirsutus L. and Swietenia macrophylla L.), in an agroforestry homegarden in Southern Kerala, India. Litterfall and nutrient additions in the six species ranged from 383 to 868 g m−2 yr−1, nitrogen, 6.4 to 8.8, phosphorus, 0.17 to 0.42 and potassium, 1.1 to 2.8 g m−2 yr−1. The annual litter output in the homegarden was 425 kg with A. hirsutus, M. indica, A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale recording significantly higher litter and nutrient additions. Leaf litter decay studies revealed A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale to be the most labile litter species and S. macrophylla the most recalcitrant. The decay rate coefficients varied significantly among the species. Foliage decomposition rates related to the initial chemical composition of the litter revealed best correlation with lignin. NPK release was almost complete by the end of decay in all species inspite of the initial phases of accumulation observed for nitrogen and phosphorus. Two-way analysis of variance test revealed significant differences in the contents of the three elements as a function of species and time elapsed. Macronutrients were released in the order K>N/P. The higher rates of decay and nutrient turnover in M. indica, A. heterophyllus and A. occidentale foliage indicated the potential of using these species’ litter as nutrient inputs in agriculture while A. triphysa, A. hirsutus and S. macrophylla perform better as organic mulches taking a longer time for decay and hence nutrient release.  相似文献

Detailed accounts supported by experimental data are furnished regarding the haematological parameters of the host fish, Channa striatus infested by the isopod, Alitropus typus. Results demonstrate that the infested fish become anaemic through loss of blood as shown by a reduction in the total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin content and haematocrit. Considering the mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and volume index, the anaemia can be designated as macrocytic and hypochromic. The total and differential counts of white blood corpuscles of the infested fish indicate leucopenia coupled with lymphocytosis. The percentages of monocytes, neutrophils and macrophages, which were 0.65%, 0.39% and 1.04%, respectively, after 24 h of infestation, had increased to 2.31%, 4.91% and 2.02%, respectively, after 96 h of infestation and declined thereafter.  相似文献

The grey mullet, Mugil macrolepis (Aguas) Smith could be induced to spawn by the administration of pituitary alone from the same species. The threshold dose was found to be three and four glands as the first and second injections after a 6-h interval. About 40% of the experiments were successful. The hand-stripped eggs were artificially fertilized with milt by the dry method.The embryonic development of the eggs are briefly described. The majority of the fertilized eggs hatched out about 23 h after fertilization. The salinity of the water ranged from 29 to 31‰ and temperature from 26 to 29°C.A method for the large-scale rearing of mullet larvae is outlined. “Seasoned greenwater” is produced by keeping slightly manured brackish water for about a fortnight in small tanks which can be exposed to sunlight in the afternoon. Blooms of Chlorella sp. developed and the larvae fed on the microplankton. The larvae at about 1 cm in length fed exclusively on copepods. Hence copepod cultures were maintained simultaneously in manured cisterns for feeding the mullet larvae until they accepted artificial feeds.  相似文献

Ex situ biodegradation of Mangifera indica L, Artocarpus heterophyllus.Lamk. and Anacardium occidentale L. leaf litter were examined in the warm humid tropics of southern Kerala adopting the standard litter bag technique. The time taken for the decay varied with the species and it followed the order Mangifera >Artocarpus>Anacardium. Weight loss accorded a linear decline and was better correlated with soil moisture than temperature. The half-life values were 3.2, 3.4 and 4.0 months for Anacardium, Artocarpus and Mangifera, respectively. Soil faunal and floral activities were monitored during the decay and the earthworms, fungi and bacteria proved the chief degraders of the intact litter. Actinomycetes were active during the final stages. The variations in decay rates of the three species are attributed to the differences in the litter quality and activity of the decomposer organisms in soil. NPK dynamics revealed temporary phases of immobilization for nitrogen and phosphorus before final release, while potassium recorded a continuous release. Decomposition apparently improved the available NPK status of soil, potassium being liable to leaching was soon lost from the surface soil.  相似文献

Kerala State on the southwestern coast of India in the tropical humid zone has a predominantly agricultural economy, a very high density of population and therefore high pressure on cultivable land. The farmers there undertake cultivation of an array of crops — tree crops, plantation crops, seasonals and biennials — all in intimate mixtures on the same piece of land around the homesteads. Farm animals and poultry and sometimes fisheries also are essential components of the system. The close association of agricultural crops, tree crops and animals in the homesteads represents an excellent example of sustainable and productive agroforestry homegardens. Optimum utilization of available resources of land, solar energy and technological inputs and an efficient recycling of farm wastes are important characteristics of the systems. This paper attempts to describe and evaluate the systems' stability, productivity and sustainability, and identify its merits and constraints as well as research needs.  相似文献

Biological invasions are a leading threat to native wildlife, human health and food production worldwide. Understanding the invasion history helps identifying introduction pathways and organizing integrated management strategies especially aimed at avoiding multiple reintroductions. We coupled a recently developed spatial analysis (Geographic profiling) with trade flows quantification to identify the most likely spreading centre of a recent invader of Europe, the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii. This polyphagous vinegar fly recently colonized western countries, where it is heavily threatening fruit production causing severe economic losses. Characterized by a rapid spread and a huge impact, the invasion of this pest has a few precedents and it is becoming a model in invasion biology and pest management. Thanks to our spatial approach based on data presence of D. suzukii in European countries in the very first years of it spread, we update the current knowledge of a first spread in Spain and Italy, suggesting on the contrary that the South of France may be the most likely spreading centre of D. suzukii in Europe. Estimates of propagule pressure (fresh host fruits importation) support this finding as imports from contaminated South East Asian countries are higher in France than in Spain or Italy. Our study provides a first step in the comprehension of invasion history of this pest species and emphasizes geographic profiling as an efficient technique to track down invaders colonization patterns.  相似文献

For establishing nitrification in prawn (non-penaeid, salinity 10–15 ppt) and shrimp (penaeid, salinity 30–35 ppt) larval production systems, a stringed bed suspended bioreactor (SBSBR) was designed, fabricated, and validated. It was fabricated with 5 mm polystyrene and low density polyethylene beads as the substrata for ammonia and nitrite oxidizing bacterial consortia, respectively, with an overall surface area of 684 cm2. The reactors were activated in a prototype activator and were transported in polythene bags to the site of testing. Performance of the reactors activated with the nitrifying bacterial consortia AMONPCU-1 (ammonia oxidizers for non-penaeid culture) and NIONPCU-1 (nitrite oxidizers for non-penaeid culture) was evaluated in a Macrobrachium rosenbergii larval rearing system and those activated with AMOPCU-1 (ammonia oxidizers for penaeid culture) and NIOPCU-1 (nitrite oxidizers for penaeid culture) in a Penaeus monodon seed production system. Rapid setting up of nitrification could be observed in both the static systems which resulted in a higher relative per cent survival of larvae.  相似文献
