Agricultural water is delivered by open irrigation canals in system of reservoirs with a widespread distribution in South Korea. Traditional irrigation management problems include water distribution systems with less capacity than the peak demand, irregular delivery rates, and low irrigation efficiency and uniformity. It is necessary to strategically compare the estimated irrigation demands with the actual water supplies for decision making in order to maintain the water supply according to the demand. Accurate measurement and monitoring of water distribution systems is essential in order to solve the problems of water efficiency and availability. Auto water level gauges installed at the head and tail sections of each irrigation canal in the Dongjin River were used to measure the discharge during irrigation periods. In this study, we introduced an approach to assess the water delivery performance indicators of the open irrigation canals, which is essential for identifying the key issues for water management improvement. The irrigation efficiencies according to the water delivery performance indicators were measured with an automatic water gauge in the irrigation canals and were calculated from the spatial and temporal distribution of the water supply for the lack of planning in water delivery. The calculated performance indicators are useful to understand the irrigator behavior and general irrigation trends. Analysis of the results yielded insights into possible improvement methods in order to develop water management policies that enable irrigation planners to improve the temporal uniformity and equity in the water distribution. 相似文献

The alpha-glucosidase inhibitor 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) is one of the simplest naturally occurring carbohydrate mimics, with promising biological activity in vivo. Although there is considerable interest in the pharmacological effects of DNJ, the antidiabetic effects of DNJ in type 2 diabetes mellitus have received little attention. In this work, DNJ was isolated from the silkworm (Bombyx mori), and its antidiabetic effects were evaluated in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats, an established animal model of human type 2 diabetes mellitus, and in control Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats. DNJ treatment showed significant antidiabetic effects in OLETF rats, with significant improvements in fasting blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance and, especially, increased insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, there was significant loss of body weight in both groups. DNJ also showed significant antihyperglycemic effects in streptozotocin- and high-fat-diet-induced hyperglycemic rats. Its efficacy and dose profiles were better than those of acarbose, a typical alpha-glucosidase inhibitor in clinical use. Furthermore, a substantial fraction of DNJ was absorbed into the bloodstream within a few minutes of oral administration. DNJ was also detected in the urine. These findings suggest that its postprandial hypoglycemic effect in the gastrointestinal tract is a possible but insufficient mechanism of action underlying the antidiabetic effects of DNJ. Its antiobesity effect and improvement of insulin sensitivity are other possible antidiabetic effects of DNJ. 相似文献

Since predicted changes in climate will modify temperature and rainfall patterns, there are concerns about the potential impacts of these changes on agricultural drought and agricultural water resources management. An agricultural drought is influenced by several factors such as rainfall, soil characteristics, crops, and reservoir water supply and may be defined as the imbalance of water circulation in paddy and water environments. In particular, soil moisture and water supply for reservoir demand are the most direct and important indicators of agricultural drought events. In the past, conventional drought management approaches based on climatic and meteorological observations have been the primary tools used for measuring drought severity. Because of the spatial and temporal variability and multiple impacts of drought, it is necessary to improve tools to determine the onset, severity, spatial extent, and end of the drought conditions. Improved and available data for mapping and monitoring of this phenomenon are also needed. Effective and efficient drought management can be achieved through drought monitoring based on the ability to assess current conditions and provide improved tools to adapt and mitigate the impacts of future changes. In this article, a methodology is developed to support the risk-based decision-making process involved in agricultural drought management using the following four strategies: drought assessment and monitoring, drought forecast and outlook, drought countermeasures, and drought records management. 相似文献

We determined the contribution of the Rho family of low molecular GTP-binding proteins to phorbol ester-induced contraction in swine pulmonary artery smooth muscle. In Ca2+-free medium containing 1 mM EGTA, 12-deoxyphorbol 13-isobutyrate (DPB, 1 microM), a protein kinase C (PKC) activator, elicited sustained contractions, which were not inhibited by treatment with verapamil, a voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel antagonist, and Y27632, a Rho-associated kinase inhibitor. Immunoblot analysis showed three PKC isoforms (alpha, epsilon, and zeta) and two Rho GTPases (RhoA and Cdc42) in both cytosolic and the membrane fractions from quiescent strips. DPB (1 microM) significantly induced PKCalpha and epsilon to translocate from the cytosolic to the membrane fraction in Ca2+-free medium. DPB also elicited the translocation of Cdc42, but not RhoA to the membrane fraction. Similarly, in the experiment for measurement of Rho GTPase activity by pull-down assay, DPB (1 microM) significantly increased the activity of Cdc42 in Ca2+-free medium. Norepinephrine (NE, 10 microM) stimulated the redistribution of RhoA from the cytosolic to the membrane fraction in swine pulmonary artery smooth muscle. In contrast, NE did not alter the subcellular distributions of Cdc42 and the PKC isoforms. These results indicate that phorbol ester evokes PKC-mediated Ca2+-independent contraction via a Rho GTPase pathway, especially Cdc42, in smooth muscle from swine pulmonary arteries. 相似文献
