One of the main environmental impacts of concentrated animal feeding operations is the soil degradation in vicinity with the livestock breeding facilities due to substances such as ammonia emitted from the various stages of the process. Owing to the high temperatures of the Mediterranean ecosystems, the evolution of gasses is more extensive and the soil degradation is consequently more severe than those obtained in northern Europe. In this research, the soil degradation effects of a large meat-producing, processing, and packaging unit have been investigated. The investigated intensive hog farming operation (IHFO) is located at a limestone soil coastal area with sea to the north and hills to the south. Soil samples of the upper mineral soil were taken in various distances and directions from the IHFO boundaries. Thirteen experimental cycles were carried out in the duration of 1.5 years starting in March 2009 until October 2010. The soil samples were analyzed on pH and electrical conductivity (EC) values as well as NH4 + and NO3 concentrations. Significantly higher concentrations of the two nitrogen forms were observed on samples at increasing proximity downwind from the farm (south). Southern soil average NH4 + and NO3 concentrations ranged between 0.4–118 μg NH4 +-N g−1 soil and 6.1–88.4 μg NO3 -N g−1 soil, respectively. The variation of emitted gasses depositions was clearly reflected in the average pH and EC values. Average pH and EC values downwind from IHFO boundaries varied between 7.1–8.2 and 140–268 μS/cm, respectively.  相似文献

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation activities lead to soil degradation in vicinity with the livestock breeding facilities, mainly due to ammonia emissions from the various stages of the process. In this research, the soil degradation effects of an intensive hog farming operation (IHFO) located at a Mediterranean limestone soil coastal area, have been investigated. Soil samples of the upper mineral soil were taken in various distances (10?C1,500?m) and directions from the IHFO boundaries. Thirteen experimental cycles were carried out in the duration of 1.5?years starting in March 2009 until October 2010. The soil samples were analysed on total, exchangeable and water-soluble Al, Fe and Mn. Significantly higher concentrations of the exchangeable and water-soluble Al, Fe and Mn were observed on soil samples at increasing proximity downwind from the farm (south). Southern soil average concentrations of exchangeable Al3+, Fe3+ and Mn2+ ranged between 3.56 and 7.45?mmol Al3+ kg?1 soil, 5.85 and 7.11?mmol Fe3+ kg?1 soil and 2.36 and 5.03?mmol Mn2+ kg?1 soil, respectively. Southern soil average concentrations of water-soluble Al, Fe and Mn forms ranged between 1.1 and 4.6?ppm Al, 0.5 and 0.8?ppm Fe and 0.4 and 1?ppm Mn, respectively.  相似文献

Analysis of the human and mouse genomes identified an abundance of conserved non-genic sequences (CNGs). The significance and evolutionary depth of their conservation remain unanswered. We have quantified levels and patterns of conservation of 191 CNGs of human chromosome 21 in 14 mammalian species. We found that CNGs are significantly more conserved than protein-coding genes and noncoding RNAS (ncRNAs) within the mammalian class from primates to monotremes to marsupials. The pattern of substitutions in CNGs differed from that seen in protein-coding and ncRNA genes and resembled that of protein-binding regions. About 0.3% to 1% of the human genome corresponds to a previously unknown class of extremely constrained CNGs shared among mammals.  相似文献

For bioremediation of copper-contaminated soils, it is essential to understand copper adsorption and chemical forms in soils related to microbes. In this study, a Penicillium strain, which can tolerate high copper concentrations up to 150 mmol l?1 Cu2+, was isolated from a copper mining area. The objective was to study effects of this fungus on copper adsorptions in solutions and chemical forms in soils. Results from lab experiments showed the maximum biosorptions occurred at 360 min with 6.15 and 15.08 mg g?1 biomass from the media with Cu2+ of 50 and 500 mg l?1, respectively. The copper was quickly adsorbed by the fungus within the contact time of the first 60 min. To characterize the adsorption process of copper, four types of kinetics models were used to fit the copper adsorption data vs. time. Among the kinetics models, the two-constant equation gave the best results, as indicated by the high coefficients of determination (R 2?=?0.89) and high significance (p?<?0.01). The addition of the fungal strain to autoclaved soil facilitated increases in concentrations of acid-soluble copper, copper bound to oxides, and of copper bound to organic matter (p?<?0.05). However, the inoculation of Penicillium sp. A1 led to a decrease of water-soluble copper in the soil. The results suggested that Penicillium sp. A1 has the potential for bioremediation of copper-contaminated soils.  相似文献

A fish kill was recorded at the Aposelemis Dam, which is the main reservoir of drinking water for the island of Crete in Greece. Hundreds of goldfish were found dead at a side stream which provides water to the reservoir. The affected fish had been entrapped in a small pond at the side of the stream with practically zero water renewal as the event occurred in August which is a dry season for the island of Crete. The event was alarming for the local community since anthropogenic pollution was initially suspected which could pose a significant human health threat. Following examination of the fish, the mortality was attributed to heavy infection by the parasitic flagellate, Ichthyobodo sp., whilst no pollutants were detected. The parasite was studied through light and scanning electron microscopy and was identified molecularly.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that resistance of Botrytis cinerea to QoI fungicides has been attributed to the G143A mutation in the cytochrome b (cytb) gene, while, in a part of the fungal population, an intron has been detected at codon 143 of the gene, preventing QoI resistance. During 2005–2009, 304 grey mould isolates were collected from strawberry, tomato, grape, kiwifruit, cucumber and apple in Greece and screened for resistance to pyraclostrobin and for the presence of the cytb intron, using a novel real‐time TaqMan PCR assay developed in the present study. RESULTS: QoI‐resistant phenotypes existed only within the population collected from strawberries. All resistant isolates possessed the G143A mutation. Differences were observed in the genotypic structure of cytb. Individuals possessing the intron were found at high incidence in apple fruit and greenhouse‐grown tomato and cucumber populations, whereas in the strawberry population the intron frequency was lower. Cultivation of QoI‐resistant and QoI‐sensitive isolates for ten culture cycles on artificial nutrient medium in the presence or absence of fungicide selection showed that QoI resistance was stable. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study suggest that a high risk for selection of QoI‐resistant strains exists in crops heavily treated with QoIs, in spite of the widespread occurrence of the cytb intron in B. cinerea populations. The developed real‐time TaqMan PCR constitutes a powerful tool to streamline detection of the mutation by reducing pre‐ and post‐amplification manipulations, and can be used for rapid screening and quantification of QoI resistance. A series of starch-fatty acid samples were prepared using three types of starches differing in their amylose content i.e. maize, pea and amylomaize and three fatty acids differing in their chain length; i.e. myristic, palmitic and stearic. Two different modes of heating the starch systems were employed; i.e. either prior to the addition of the acid to starch aqueous dispersions or after heating the dispersions at the predetermined temperatures 75, 85 or 98 °C. Light and SEM microscopic examination indicated that amylose-fatty acid interactions taken place during starch gelatinization retarded the destruction of the granules depending on the heating temperature. XRD studies revealed that the degree of crystallinity exhibited by the starch samples was dependent on the amylose content, the fatty acid chain length and the modes of heating employed.  相似文献

Understanding why some people establish and maintain effective control of HIV-1 and others do not is a priority in the effort to develop new treatments for HIV/AIDS. Using a whole-genome association strategy, we identified polymorphisms that explain nearly 15% of the variation among individuals in viral load during the asymptomatic set-point period of infection. One of these is found within an endogenous retroviral element and is associated with major histocompatibility allele human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*5701, whereas a second is located near the HLA-C gene. An additional analysis of the time to HIV disease progression implicated two genes, one of which encodes an RNA polymerase I subunit. These findings emphasize the importance of studying human genetic variation as a guide to combating infectious agents.  相似文献
