The case is made that the spin-liquid state of a Mott insulator, hypothesized to exist by Anderson and identified by him as the correct context for discussing high-temperature superconductors, occurs in these materials and exhibits the principles of fractional quantization identified in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The most important of these is that particles carrying a fraction of an elementary quantum number, in this case spin, attract one another by a powerful gauge force, which can lead to a new kind of superconductivity. The temperature scale for the superconductivity is set by an energy gap in the spin-wave spectrum, which is also the fundamental measure of how "liquid" the spins are. 相似文献

1. A time‐lapse photographic technique has been developed which enables routine recording of the hatching times of up to 192 chicken embryos.

Simulations of a close encounter between two protostars, each surrounded by a relatively massive disk, resulted in the ejection of some of the disk material into a tidal tail. A portion of the tail condensed into an object with a mass in the range of 5 to 10 jovian masses. Four wethers and 14 steers (environmentally heat stressed, 32 degrees C, 60% relative humidity) were evaluated for changes in blood flow induced by endophyte-infected tall fescue. Concentration of the ergopeptide ergovaline was used as an indicator of diet toxicity due to the endophytic fungus Acremonium coenophialum. Blood flow to specific tissues was measured using radiolabeled microspheres. Wethers received one of two dietary treatments for 30 d before determination of tissue blood flow: 1) a low-endophyte diet (less than .05 ppm ergovaline) or 2) a high-endophyte (1.18 ppm ergovaline) diet. Blood flows to the adrenal glands and skin covering the inner hind leg were less (P less than .10) in wethers consuming the high-endophyte diet than in those consuming the low-endophyte diet. Tissue blood flows in steers were determined on two occasions: 1) after steers had received a low- (less than .01 ppm ergovaline) or high-endophyte (.52 ppm ergovaline) fescue diet for 14 d and 2) 8 d after steers had been switched to a common, fescue-free diet. Blood flows to skin covering the ribs, cerebellum of the brain, duodenum, and colon were less (P less than .10) in steers consuming the high-endophyte diet. However, 8 d after consuming fescue-free diets, steers that had previously consumed the high-endophyte diet had greater (P = .08) blood flow to the coronary bands of the front hooves than steers that had consumed the low-endophyte diet. Blood flows to all other tissues were similar between treatments. We inferred from these experiments that the toxin(s) associated with endophyte-infected tall fescue caused decreased blood flow to peripheral and core body tissues and that this effect was abated within 8 d of removing the toxin(s). 相似文献

Crab zoeae (Rhithropanopeus harrisii) were exposed to water-soluble fractions of jet fuel (JP5) for the first 5 days or for the duration of zoeal development (11 to 14 days). Short-term exposure or continuous exposure to low concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons caused no increase in mortality or changes in development rate, and increased megalopal weight was characteristic of such groups. The objective of this study was to separate the observed nitrite (NO2–) concentration in a permanent grassland soil into process‐specific subpools. A laboratory experiment was carried out where either the nitrate and/or ammonium pool was labelled with 15N at 60 atom % excess. The main N transformations that occurred in this experiment were analysed with a 15N tracing model extended with a NO2– submodel. Techniques that have been used to date have been only able to identify NO2– subpools related to nitrification (NO2–nit) and denitrification (NO2–den). With the analysis presented here, we were able to quantify the size of an additional NO2– pool in the soil related to organic N turnover (NO2–org). All transformations related to NO2– turnover of the three subpools occurred simultaneously. After non‐linear parameter optimization the model predicted that on average NO2–den, NO2–nit and NO2–org pools contributed 57, 33 and 10% to the total soil NO2– concentration. The finding that heterotrophic processes can contribute to the NO2– dynamics in permanent grassland soils might also have important implications for the understanding of gaseous N production that are tightly linked to NO2– turnover. Further work is needed to find out how important the conversion of organic N to NO2– is in other soil‐based ecosystems and to identify the microbial groups responsible for this process. 相似文献

Mud crab larvae, Rhithropanopeus harrisii were exposed to tributyltin oxide, (TBTO) (0.5, 1, 5, 10, 15, or 25 μg l?1) or tributyltin sulfide (TBTS) (0.5, 1, 5, 20, 30, or 50 μg l?1). Differential survival was observed in TBTO concentrations equal to or greater than 10 gg l?1 and in TBTS concentrations equal to or greater than 20 μg l?1 Growth and development rate were assessed as sublethal indices of stress. Of the two, development rate was more sensitive. All groups exposed to either compound had slower development rates than controls. Growth of the larvae, as shown by weight gain, was slightly increased in low exposures (a hormetic response) and decreased significantly in higher concentrations. The mean weight of the 50 μg l?1 TBTS group showed the largest decrease, to 57% of the control. The hormesis response was further examined by measuring daily growth of the zoeae. All groups exposed to tributyltin compounds showed an initial growth lag. The hormesis response occurred in the fourth zoeal stage or megalops. While R. harrisii is relatively tolerant to the acute toxicity of tributyltin compounds compared to other marine crustaceans tested, sublethal responses occur in very low concentrations.
