Abstract— An objective method for measuring corneocyte numbers before and after antiseborrheic shampoo therapy was assessed in dogs. Corneocytes were collected from six skin regions on the dorsal trunk of nine colony-raised beagles with clinically normal skin. Forty-eight collection sites were randomly assigned a treatment with one of seven medicated shampoos or water alone; six additional sites served as non-treated controls. Corneocytes were collected immediately before the first treatment, and 14 and 28 days after initiation of therapy with a 0.1% Tween 80 surfactant and a quantitative cup-scrub technique. Pretreatment corneocyte counts were not significantly different among the nine dogs nor among the randomly assigned treatment and control sites (3.55 · 104 cells.cm-2, SEM 0.17). Corneocyte counts increased in all treatment and control sites from days 0 to 14. Corneocyte counts were similar in the non-treated and water-treated sites from days 14 to 28. Corneocyte counts were not significantly different when the same treatments were compared on days 0, 14 and 28, or when different treatments were compared on the same day. The corneocyte collection technique used in this study proved to be a reliable method for assessing the rate of cell desquamation and cell surface cohesion in dogs.  相似文献

Forty British Friesian cows with a mean calving date of 28 January were used in a randomized block design experiment to evaluate a high-quality grass silage for milk production. The high-quality silage was made from two consecutive cuts of a perennial ryegrass sward after regrowth intervals of 37 days, wilted to 51% dry matter, finely chopped and ensiled using 2.2 1 t-1 (0.5 gallons per ton) of formic acid. The resulting silage had a dry matter digestibility of 72.9% and was fed ad libitum with 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) concentrates as a supplement. A medium-quality grass silage, of lower digestibility and dry matter content (70.0 and 25.4% respectively), was also fed ad libitum in addition to either 3.8, 5.7 or 7.6 kg (8.4, 12.5 or 16.7 lb) concentrates. The feeding treatments were commenced immediately after calving and were terminated on 9 April giving a mean period of 72 d on the treatments. Over the experimental period the animals on the high-quality silage consumed 15% more silage dry matter and produced 8% more milk that those on the medium-quality silage with the same level of concentrate supplementation. From the results it was estimated that 1.9 kg (4.3 lb) of additional concentrates would be required with the medium-quality silage to give an equivalent milk output to that achieved with the high-quality silage. Milk composition, liveweight change, ration digestibility and nitrogen balance data are also presented.  相似文献

Monthly plantings of three maize cultivars with differing resistance/susceptibility to maize streak geminivirus (MSV) and samplings of Cicadulina leafhopper vectors were made from December 1988 to April 1990 in the humid forest and from May to November 1989 in the Guinea savanna zones of Nigeria. High MSV disease incidences (43–56%) were recorded on susceptible cultivar TZB-Gusau in late-season (July-October) plantings. Hybrid 8321-21 showed significantly lower MSV disease incidence and severity than the other two cultivars, TZB-Gusau and 8329-15. Cicadulina species population peaks (5.2-13.5 leafhoppers/m2) were observed before the rains ended in savanna locations and after the end of the rains in the forest zone. Cicadulina mbila was the predominant species, whereas C. storeyi (syn. C. triangula ), C. arachidis, C. similis and C. ghaurii were less common. The proportion of viruliferous leafhoppers increased as the season progressed, reaching maxima of 15–25% at the end of the growing season. Interactions between disease incidence, Cicadulina populations, maize cultivars and rainfall are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of municipal solid waste (MSW) leachate spray irrigationon a mature northern hardwood forest was investigated. Canopyfoliar samples and stem increment cores were collected fromtwo indicative species, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.)and American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.), within each ofa heavily sprayed, lightly sprayed and control area. Foliarconcentrations of N and P were significantly higher in bothmaple and beech foliage within the sprayed areas when comparedto an unsprayed area (control). Levels of Mg and K were markedlyhigher in maple but not beech foliar samples within the heavilysprayed areas when compared to foliage sampled within the unsprayedcontrol. While no significant trends were observed within themaple foliage, both Fe and B levels increased significantlyin beech foliar samples obtained from within the heavily sprayedarea in comparison to foliage samples from the control. Directporometric measurements of the transpiration rate and diffusive(stomatal) resistance of canopy and understory plant leavesrevealed a significant increase in diffusive resistance anda decline in transpiration rate with leachate spraying. Afterfour years of spraying a significant effect of leachate applicationon radial stem growth of both maple and beech trees has notbeen observed.  相似文献

Acoustic survey data were used to estimate the abundance and distribution of age-0 walleye pollock and zooplankton near the Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea, nursery area at two time periods in two consecutive years: the beginning of August, and mid-September, of 1996 and 1997. The 1996 pollock year class ultimately produced a large adult cohort in the eastern Bering Sea, while the 1997 year class produced a below-average adult cohort. Acoustic densities of age-0 pollock were significantly lower in August – and declined more strongly from August to September – in 1997 than in 1996, indicating that the trend to adult cohort strength was already set by August. Diet composition analyses revealed that age-0 pollock ate a much higher proportion of euphausiids in 1997 than in 1996, despite lower acoustic abundance of euphausiids in 1997. We infer that in 1996, age-0 pollock experienced greater feeding success by August, with high concentrations of copepods available for smaller fish to consume, and high concentrations of euphausiids available for larger individuals. In 1997, age-0 pollock had lower body condition in August and may have been limited by the availability of small (<2 mm) copepods. Bioenergetic modeling of prey consumption did not indicate a likelihood that age-0 pollock would begin to deplete euphausiids until late August in 1996, and not at all between August and mid-September in 1997.  相似文献
