SUMMARY: The records of 2034 beef bulls representing 931 sire families from ten breeds tested at Ellerslie Test Station, Alberta, Canada, from 1974 to 1987 were analyzed to investigate the feasibility of selecting a shorter test period and study the associations between the growth rate in the standard 140-day test period and that in shorter test periods for accurate evaluation of growth potential of young beef bulls in test station. The results indicated that the period between day 28 and day 112 of the standard test was less affected by herd of origin compared with the standard 140-day test period and therefore could be considered as the short optimum test period. Average daily gain in this period was least affected by herd of origin, and had relatively high heritability which would ensure satisfactory selection response. In order to properly evaluate growth potential of beef bulls and economically make use of the testing facilities, it would be appropriate to have an adjustment period of 56 days (original 28 days plus the first 28-day period of the standard test) followed by a test period of 84 days (between day 28 and day 112 of the standard test). Such a test would result in reduction in management costs while providing a more accurate evaluation of growth potentials of young beef bulls. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Optimale Prüfperiode und Zusammenh?nge zwischen Standard-140-Tage- und kürzerer Prüfung für Wachstumsrate bei Stationsprüfung von Fleischrind-Bullen Leistungsangaben von 2034 Fleischbullen aus 931 Bullennachkommenschaften von 10 Rassen wurden auf der Allersly-Station Alberta, Kanada, von 1974 bis 1987 im Hinblick darauf analysiert, inwieweit Beziehungen zwischen Wachstumsrate in der Standard-140-Tage-Periode und der in kürzeren Zeitabschnitten existieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, da? die Prüfperiode zwischen den Tagen 28 und 112 des Standardtests weniger durch Herkunft tangiert wird als die Standard 140-Tagetest-Periode und daher als optimale Prüfperiode betrachtet werden kann. Durchschnittszunahmen waren in dieser Periode am wenigsten durch Herkunft beeinflu?t und haben relativ hohe Heritabilit?t, die hinreicht, um Selektionserfolg zu sichern. Many ordered intermetallic alloys have attractive high-temperature properties; however, low ductility and brittle fracture limit their use for structural applications. The embrittlement in these alloys is mainly caused by an insufficient number of slip systems (bulk brittleness) and poor grain-boundary cohesion. Recent studies have shown that the ductility and fabricability of ordered intermetallics can be substantially improved by alloying processes and control of microstructural features through rapid solidification and thermomechanical treatments. These results demonstrate that the brittleness problem associated with ordered intermetallics can be overcome by using physical metallurgical principles. Application of these principles will be illustrated by results on Ni(3)Al and Ni(3)V-Co(3)V-Fe(3)V. The potential for developing these alloys as a new class of high-temperature structural materials is discussed.  相似文献

The existence of a cubic fluorite-type SnO(2) and a hexagonal TiO(2) (which may be related to the fluorite structure) have been demonstrated by an in situ x-ray diffraction study in which a diamond-anvil pressure cell was used after the samples had been heated by a continuous yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser. At room temperature, the lattice parameter for SnO(2) (fluorite) is a = 4.925 +/- 0.005 angstroms and those for TiO(2) (fluorite-related) are a = 9.22 +/- 0.01 angstroms and c = 5.685 +/- 0.006 angstroms at about 250 kilobars. The volume change associated with the transition from rutile to fluorite (or related structure) is about -8 percent for SnO(2) and -10.5 percent for TiO(2) at transition. Upon release of pressure, both the fluorite-type SnO(2) and the TiO(2) reverted to the alpha-PbO(2) structure at room temperature. The hypothesis that the earth's lower mantle is composed of oxide phases might be feasible if it were possible for SiO(2) to possess the fluorite structure or its related forms at high pressure, as shown for SnO(2) and TiO(2) in this study. The oxide hypothesis proposed here differs from that postulated by Birch in that the primary coordination of silicon is 6 for Birch's hypothesis and 8 for the hypothesis presented here.  相似文献

We evaluated the biomass and ergosterol content of Hericium erinaceus mycelium, and extracellular enzyme activities in H. erinaceus liquid culture following salicylic acid(SA) and methyl jasmonic acid(Me JA)supplementation. The optimal SA concentration was100 lmoláL-1, where the highest ergosterol content of 2.33 mgág-1was obtained following 6-day cultivation with100 lmoláL-1SA supplementation, and which was significantly higher than the unsupplemented control(p \ 0.01). Following 4-day supplementation with50 lmoláL-1Me JA, the highest ergosterol content obtained was 1.988 mgág-1, which was 25.8 % higher than the unsupplemented control. Our data indicate that SA and Me JA supplementation improves ergosterol content in H.erinaceus mycelium.  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) based on recombinant nucleocapsid (N) protein generated in Escherichia coli was evaluated for its sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PEDV) infection. The N gene encoding the N protein was cloned and expressed as a fusion protein with His tag protein in E. coli. The recombinant N protein was migrated at 48 kDa and reacted with six histidine tag specific monoclonal antibody by immunoblotting. Recombinant N protein ELISA (rnELISA) demonstrated 98.7% specificities among (80) PEDV-free individuals, and 98% sensitivity ranging among (103) clinical samples with PEDV. On testing 884 field samples, an overall agreement of 88.3% was generated between the SN and rnELISA. Taken together, these results indicated that nucleocapsid protein may be a useful antigen for the sera-diagnosis of PEDV and it was also suggested that the ELISA is a highly sensitive and specific test for detecting antibodies to PEDV.  相似文献

Porcine circovirus type 1 (PCV1) and type 2 (PCV2) are two genotypes of porcine circovirus. Both of them are presumed to be widespread in the swine population. Currently, there is no specific treatment for their infections. RNA interference (RNAi) is a sequence-specific RNA degradation mechanism mediated by small interfering RNA (siRNA), which represents a possible therapeutic application for the treatment of viral infections. In this study, three siRNA expression plasmids (pS-RepA, pS-RepB and pS-RepC) were generated to target three different coding regions of the Rep protein (Rep) of PCV. These siRNAs were used to inhibit PCV production in a porcine kidney cell line, PK-15 cells. Our results revealed that Rep gene expression was inhibited by pS-RepA, pS-RepB and pS-RepC to different degrees. Moreover, our study also showed that the production of PCV1 and PCV2 was reduced by these siRNAs. pS-RepC, which targets the middle region of Rep gene, proved to be the most efficient siRNA for inhibition of Rep expression and viral production. Taken together, our data suggest that RNAi could be investigated as a potential treatment for PCV infection.  相似文献

This study examined the reproductive endocrine profile under natural and artificial photoperiods in Magang goose ganders. Group 1 ganders (n=8) served as non-treated controls and were exposed to natural photoperiod throughout the experiment from 13th January to 17th December 2004. Group 2 ganders (n=8) were exposed to 18 h long daily photoperiod for 60 days from 13 January till 15 March 2004 and again to 16 h photoperiod for 75 days till 10th October 2004, and the 11h short photoperiod in the remainder periods of the experiment. In control ganders, plasma LH concentrations were high in normal breeding seasons (August-March) and decreased to low levels in non-breeding season from April to July. Testosterone concentrations changed similarly to that of LH throughout the seasons. Seasonal pattern of PRL concentrations was opposite to those of LH and testosterone, with low values in breeding season and high values in non-breeding season. In artificial photoperiod treated ganders, increasing photoperiod increased PRL and decreased LH and testosterone concentrations, while decreasing photoperiod reversed these changes. There were no seasonal or photoperiod caused changes in plasma T3 concentrations in both control ganders and artificial photoperiod treated ganders. These results demonstrated that in Magang goose ganders that long photoperiod stimulates PRL secretion and decreases LH secretion, which terminates reproductive season in spring and early summer, and short photoperiod stimulates LH secretion and inhibits PRL secretion rendering ganders enter into reproductive season.  相似文献
