Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a very common disorder in elderly cats. A proper renal diet represents the most efficient therapeutic intervention to improve survival and life quality in feline patients with 3 and 4 International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stages. Twenty cats were selected in this study. Ten were administered the dietary supplementation for 360 days and the other ten, whose owners did not give consent for any supplemental therapies apart from the renal diet, were selected from a clinical database and used as control group. The present study is a long term study (360 days) aiming to evaluate the efficacy and palatability of a dietary supplementation containing calcium carbonate, calcium-lactate gluconate, chitosan and sodium bicarbonate in cats diagnosed with 3 and 4 IRIS stages of CKD. The owners were asked to fill in questionnaires to get information on the cat’s appetite, the palatability of the given supplement, the presence of vomit and/or diarrhoea, general health and vitality. Hematochemical, biochemical and urinary analyses were performed on day 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150,180 and 360. GraphPad Prism® software was used to perform statistical analysis. Our study shows that the given dietary supplement reduced serum phosphorus and increased serum bicarbonate values in cats with CKD. In turn, this supplement could be used as a support therapy in cats with advanced CKD improving their clinical conditions without any adverse reaction. Finally, it is important to underline that all the animals completed the study and the owners reported a good palatability of the feed supplement.  相似文献

An important frontier in the administration of therapeutic drugs to veterinary species is the use of different polymers as drug delivery platforms. The usefulness of polymers as platforms for the administration of pharmaceutical and agricultural agents has been clearly recognized in the recent decades. The chemical versatility of polymers and the wide range of developed controlled‐release strategies enhance the possibilities for the formulation of active molecules. In particular, the veterinary area offers opportunities for the development of novel controlled‐release drug delivery technologies adapted to livestock or companion animal health needs. In some cases, it also allows to improve profitability in meat production or to meet the safety criteria related to drug residues. A number of factors affect the selection of polymers and subsequent properties of the controlled‐release drug delivery system. However, their selection also dictates the release kinetics of the drug from the delivery system. Such choices are therefore crucial as they affect the success and potential of the delivery system for achieving the therapeutic goals of the veterinarian. It is the intention of this review to give an overview of the most relevant polymers, which are used or have been tested as drug delivery release rate modifiers in the veterinary field. The article highlights some recent developments focusing on their advantages and applications and analyzes the future direction of the scientific and technological advancements in this area.  相似文献

Sardinian wild Euphorbia pithyusa, E. semiperfoliata, E. dendroides and E. characias seed oils were analyzed for their fatty acids, unsaponifiable and tocopherol content. Total tocopherol content showed a wide variability, ranging from 939 mg/kg in E. semiperfoliata seeds to its absence in E. characias. The results on tocopherol content were statistically correlated with both 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging test and the beta-carotene bleaching antioxidant test. All seeds were rich in linolenic acid, while no uncommon fatty acids were detected.  相似文献

The ability of an immunomodulator, mycobacterial cell wall extract (MCWE), to clear uterine infection in susceptible mares after an experimental challenge withStreptococcus zooepidemicus was evaluated. Thirty mares susceptible to endometritis, based on the presence of uterine fluid during both diestrus and estrus, were selected from a herd of 896 and inoculated with a live culture of 5 × 106 CFU of S. zooepidemicus on day 1 of estrus. Twenty-four hours later, mares were evaluated by ultrasonography, bacteriology, exfoliative cytology, and uterine biopsy to confirm infection. Forty-eight hours after inoculation, and on confirmation of uterine infection, mares were randomly assigned to one of four unbalanced experimental treatments to receive 1500 μg MCWE IU (n = 10) or IV (n = 10), or placebo IU (n = 5) or IV (n = 5). Mares were examined at ovulation and 7 days post-ovulation for uterine fluid via transrectal ultrasonography and for bacteriology, exfoliative cytology, and uterine biopsy. Efficacy was based on the ability of the mare to clear endometritis as determined by negative bacteriology and reduced numbers of polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) on uterine biopsy. Because no statistical difference was detected between routes of administration on day 7 post-ovulation, the data sets were combined and re-analyzed to evaluate overall efficacy. Endometritis was observed in all placebo-treated mares 7 days post-ovulation, whereas treatment with MCWE resulted in the elimination of endometritis in 35% of the mares by the time of ovulation, and 70% of the mares by 7 days post-ovulation. Treatment with MCWE, compared with the placebo group, resulted in a significant decrease in the number of mares positive for endometritis at ovulation based on exfoliative cytology and bacteriology (P < .01) and at 7 days post-ovulation based on biopsy, exfoliative cytology, and bacteriology (P < .001). Results indicate that MCWE was an effective treatment for the elimination of endometritis caused by S. zooepidemicus in mares.  相似文献

Flubendazole (FLBZ) is a broad spectrum benzimidazole methylcarbamate anthelmintic widely used in poultry and swine. However, there is no information available on the pharmacological behaviour of FLBZ in ruminants. The work reported here was addressed to evaluate the potential of FLBZ for use in sheep. The integrated assessment included evaluation of FLBZ and metabolites plasma disposition kinetics, liver metabolism and ex vivo ability to diffuse into the cestode parasite Moniezia benedeni. In a cross-over kinetic study, six healthy Corriedale sheep were treated with FLBZ by intravenous (i.v.) (4% solution) and intraruminal (i.r.) (4% suspension) administrations at the same dosage (5 mg/kg) with a 21-day washout period between treatments. Blood samples were collected between 0 and 72 h post-treatments. Sheep liver microsomes were incubated with 40 microm FLBZ and specimens of the cestode parasite M. benedeni, collected from untreated animals, were incubated (5-120 min) with FLBZ and its reduced (R-FLBZ) metabolite (5 microm). Samples of plasma, microsomal incubations and parasite material were prepared and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography to measure FLBZ and its metabolites. FLBZ parent drug showed a fast disposition being detected in the bloodstream up to 36 h after its i.v. administration. Both R-FLBZ and hydrolyzed FLBZ (H-FLBZ) metabolites were recovered in plasma as early as 5 min after the i.v. treatment in sheep. The plasma AUC ratios for R-FLBZ and FLBZ (AUC(R-FLBZ)/AUC(FLBZ)) were 4.07 i.v. and 5.55 i.r., respectively. R-FLBZ achieved a significantly higher (P < 0.01) C(max) value (0.14 microg/mL at 17.3 h post-treatment) than that observed for the parent drug FLBZ (0.04 microg/mL at 14.4 h post-treatment). Low plasma concentrations of FLBZ parent drug were measured between 6 and 48 h, and only trace concentrations of H-FLBZ were detected during a short period of time after the i.r. treatment. Consistently, sheep liver microsomes metabolized FLBZ into its reduced metabolite at a rate of 9.46 +/- 2.72 nmol/mg/h. Both FLBZ and R-FLBZ demonstrated a similar ability to quickly diffuse through the tegument of the cestode parasite. The data on FLBZ pharmacological behaviour presented here contribute to evaluate its potential to be developed as an anthelmintic for broad spectrum parasite control in ruminants.  相似文献

The present work analyzes the lipid fraction from seeds of wild Ecuadorian Theobroma subincanum and selected commercial varieties of Theobroma cacao from Mexico (var. Criollo) and Ecuador (var. Arriba). The lipid fraction was obtained from the seeds through supercritical fluid extraction and analysis performed by preparatory thin-layer chromatography followed by gas chromatography. The results revealed that in T. subincanum the triglycerides contain fatty acids with longer chains. The melting point and peroxide and saponifiable numbers were determined for each Theobroma sample. The results lead to the conclusion that T. subincanum would produce a poorer quality butter than T. cacao. Nevertheless, the results do point toward a significant commercial use of T. subincanum for low-profile products.  相似文献

The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of different doses of silymarin in diet on broiler performances and meat quality. For the trial, 180 male chicks (ROSS 508), were allocated in to three groups (S0, S40 and S80) of 60 animals each receiving a basal diet supplemented with 0 ppm, 40 ppm and 80 ppm of a sylimarin (provided by a dry extract of Silybum marianum fruits) respectively. During the trial feed consumption and live body weight were taken every 20 days. At the age of 40 and 60 days blood samples were taken in order to evaluate protein, aspartate aminotransferase, cholesterol, tryglicerides and uric acid. At the age of 60 days animals were slaughtered, dressing percentages were evaluated and samples of breast and meat were taken to evaluate chemical composition and susceptibility of lipid peroxidation by means of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Silymarin at the tested doses did not affect growth performances but slightly affected slaughtering yields negatively, no specific hepatoprotective effect was found. Treatments reduced lipid content of both breast and thigh and increased muscles resistance to oxidative stress.  相似文献

The chemical fingerprinting of the unsaponifiable fraction of different Punica granatum seed oils was performed in order to evaluate their potential as a functional food ingredient. Qualitative and quantitative determinations of tocopherol, aliphatic alcohol (including policosanol), squalene, phytosterols and triterpene contents were performed by GC-MS. A high yield (3.1–4.2%) of unsaponifiable matter was obtained and consistent levels of squalene (up to 800 mg/kg) and policosanol (118–185 mg/kg) were noticed. β-sitosterol (up to 8069 mg/kg) and cycloartenol (5916–7766 mg/kg) were predominant in phytosterol and triterpene fractions, while β- and δ-tocopherol were the most abundant vitamin E forms. Some minor variations were noticed between samples. From the results obtained, it can be suggested that the seed oil of P. granatum can be considered an interesting alimentary source of substances of nutraceutical value involved in the modulation of cholesterol metabolism.  相似文献

A set of 21 Antarctic marine bacteria isolated from the Ross Sea and able to utilise diesel fuel as the sole carbon and energy source was characterised. Isolates were analysed by amplified 16S rDNA restriction analysis using the enzyme AluI, resulting in two different groups corresponding to different bacterial species. These species were assigned to the genera Rhodococcus and Alcaligenes, on the basis of 16S rDNA sequencing. This low degree of inter-specific biodiversity was parallel to a low intra-specific biodiversity, as shown by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA analysis. Then, a 550-bp DNA fragment coding for the inner region of alkane mono-oxygenase was PCR-amplified from the genome of each strain. The phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of the putative AlkB protein coded for by the amplified DNA fragment revealed that these alkB genes were very likely inherited by horizontal gene transfer. Lastly, the analysis of the biodegradation ability of four strains revealed two different strategies of hydrocarbon uptake, mediated either by bio-surfactants and peculiar of Rhodococcus isolates, or by membrane modifications and shown by Alcaligenes isolates. In order to understand the interrelationships between hydrocarbon-degrading isolates, the dynamics of two strains, belonging to Rhodococcus and Alcaligenes, grown together in a co-culture was also followed over a seventeen days period.  相似文献
