We characterized Apis mellifera in both native and introduced ranges using 1136 single-nucleotide polymorphisms genotyped in 341 individuals. Our results indicate that A. mellifera originated in Africa and expanded into Eurasia at least twice, resulting in populations in eastern and western Europe that are geographically close but genetically distant. A third expansion in the New World has involved the near-replacement of previously introduced "European" honey bees by descendants of more recently introduced A. m. scutellata ("African" or "killer" bees). Our analyses of spatial transects and temporal series in the New World revealed differential replacement of alleles derived from eastern versus western Europe, with admixture evident in all individuals.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to chronicle the utilization pattern of a number of plant species by four major tribes inhabiting in Koraput district of Odisha, India. Fifteen villages dominated by tribal communities, under five Community Development Blocks were selected. A semi structured questionnaire was developed to bring together data on traditional crops and forest species still used by the communities. The methodology engaged was personal discussions with mixed focused groups combined with field visits, photographs, voice recordings and collection of materials. Findings were that tribal communities cultivate a diverse crop species with varying durations to meet their food and economic requirement throughout the year. This was supplemented by wild food collections during scarcity periods. Various forest species provide wood, fibre, leaves and grasses for agriculture, house construction and specific uses besides enhancing household income. Tribal health care practitioners collect medicinal plants from the wild and semi wild to treat both humans and livestock. At the end of the study the team assumed that tribal communities would continue to depend on traditional crops and wild forest foods for their household consumption and a diverse species of plants for other specific use. Conservation of these valuable resources in its natural habitat would be an appropriate approach for ensuring food security of future generations. Conventional plant breeders and biotechnologists should undertake scientific validation of these crops and plants to make their value explicitly known. This knowledge could be utilized for crop improvement and bio-prospecting. There is also scope for equitable sharing of benefits if used by the seed and pharmaceutical industries in future.  相似文献

Plantation-grown progenies of Melia composita Willd.were studied for variability in several physical properties: density,radial and tangential shrinkage,longitudinal permeability of heartwood and sapwood.Furthermore,flat-sawn planks from each of the progeny were subjected to a quick-drying test for determination of kilndrying schedule.The mean density of the species was 0.39 g cm~(-3) and the wood may be categorized as light wood.Mean radial shrinkage(%) for the species was 2.8% with progeny-wise variation in radial shrinkage from 1.56 to 4.11%.Mean tangential shrinkage(%) for the species was 5.54% with progeny-wise variation in tangential shrinkage from 3.69 to 7.71%.The resultant tangentialradial shrinkage ratio was 1.98(less than two),which suggests that the wood is relatively stable with respect to drying behavior.Mean sapwood and heartwood longitudinal permeability of the species were 3.38 and 2.02 Darcy,respectively.Higher longitudinal permeability of sapwood and heartwood indicate better drying and preservative properties of the species.Terazawa quick-drying test method suggests that the species is less susceptible to drying defects.During the test,only moderate checks and cracks were observed.A tentative kiln-drying schedule was recommended based on these results.  相似文献

A deoxy lupane triterpene carboxylic acid, lup-20(29)-en-24-oic acid (1), was isolated from the active chloroform extract of Finlaysonia obovata, a latex exuding mangrove plant. Its structure was evaluated on the basis of different spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Lup-20(29)-en-24-oic acid (1) has shown moderate antimicrobial activity, against some fish pathogens.  相似文献

Static granular bed reactor (SGBR) and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor were demonstrated at mesophilic condition for the treatment of pulp and paper mill wastewater. The hydraulic retention times (HRTs) were varied from 4 to 24 h following 29-day start-up period. The overall chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of the SGBR was higher than the UASB during this study. At 4 h HRT, the COD removal was greater than 70 % for the SGBR and 60 % for the UASB. Biomass yield and volatile fatty acids concentration of SGBR were slightly less than UASB at organic loading rates ranging from 1.2 to 5.1 kg/m3/day. The results indicated that the SGBR system can be considered a viable alternative system for anaerobic treatment for pulp and paper wastewater.  相似文献

Leafy vegetables are highly perishable and their shelf life depends on duration and conditions of storage. A low cost storage structure was used to extend the shelf life of amaranth and fenugreek and their quality was evaluated on the basis of retention of -carotene, ascorbic acid and chlorophyll during storage. Losses of -carotene ranged from 46.5 to 85.0% for amaranth and 24.0 to 73.0% for fenugreek depending on duration and conditions of storage. Similarly ascorbic acid retention varied from 9–32% for amaranth and 23–80% for fenugreek. Results showed that the degradation of quality parameters was faster at ambient conditions and packaging of leaves in low density polyethylene bags was beneficial in improving shelf life and nutritive value. Low cost storage structure was similar to low temperature storage for retention of -carotene, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll content and enhancement of shelf life.  相似文献

Arsenic mobility around mining districts is primarily controlled by distribution and abundance of iron minerals. Arsenite-rich mine waters although frequently reported, the interaction of which with schwertmannite is poorly understood despite its high toxicity and mobility. We examined three synthetic schwertmannite types distinguished by surface area (19.9?C227.5?m2/g), Fe/S molar fractions (4.7?C6.6), and saturation index (?1.6?C0.8) towards arsenite retention through controlled batch equilibrium studies at 22?±?2°C and 1 atmospheric pressure in oxic conditions. Sorption isotherms were investigated as a function of dissolved arsenite concentrations (0.13?C1.33?mmol/L) at constant sediment load (10?g/L) and pH (3.0) in order to understand the role of synthesis pathway and physicochemical properties on arsenite immobilization. Multilayer surface coverage with more than one process governs arsenite uptake. X-ray diffractograms, infrared spectroscopy, and high resolution electron microscopic examination revealed new phase formation where schwertmannite underwent morphological and structural degradation. Ionic exchange between schwertmannite SO 4 2? and aqueous arsenite has resulted in an elevated aqueous SO 4 2? that varied according to dissolved arsenite concentrations. Stoichiometric calculations showed that 1?mol of dissolved arsenite can effectively replace 0.12?C0.19?mol of schwertmannite SO 4 2? . This study implies that schwertmannites can be used as potential adsorbents for arsenite treatment where the total uptake will be strongly controlled by both ion exchange and surface precipitation.  相似文献
