Non-destructive measurement techniques were used to study the characteristics of thermally modified timber (TMT), especially checking. Two non-destructive measurement techniques were evaluated: air-coupled ultrasound (ACU) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the studied TMT (N = 38), density and pith location in the cross-section were positively correlated with the number of checks in the cross-section. Several ultrasound signal features correlated with TMT characteristics, most strongly with number of checks. Severely checked samples and other samples were considered as two different classes of checking, and the potential of ultrasound for differentiating between the two classes was tested by using Bayesian classification method. The correct classification rate was 97 %. EIS parameters correlated with density and latewood content of TMT more strongly than the ACU parameters. Thus, for determination of checking and density or earlywood/latewood content, both EIS and ACU measurements are recommended.  相似文献

Polypore communities were compared between mature managed, overmature managed, and old-growth spruce-dominated forests in southern Finland. A total of 85 polypore species, with 6000 records, were found in 16 sample plots, each 4 ha in size. Old-growth stands had on average 80% more species than mature stands, and 38% more species than overmature managed stands. Variation in polypore species richness was best explained by diversity of dead wood and the number and volume of dead trees. The best predictor for the number of threatened polypore species was the number of cut stumps. Threatened species were practically confined to old-growth forests and to stands in which the amount of dead wood exceeded 20 m3/ha. This figure appears to represent a stand-level threshold value for the amount of dead wood, below which the persistence of threatened species becomes unlikely. Our results suggest that a significant increase in the amount of dead wood (e.g. by leaving large retention trees and even by killing trees) is needed in managed forests before they become suitable habitats for threatened polypores.  相似文献

The results of field experiments with leys dominated by Festuca pratensis and Dactylis species appear to concur with the theories proposed by Kramer and Jäntti. Complete defoliation, while the soil moisture was at or near permanent wilting percentage down to about 40 cm. depth, arrested growth almost completely but the growth rate of plants with assimilating parts left was 70 to 90 per cent of the corresponding rate on moist soil. The interaction of defoliation and soil moisture, however, seemed to be confined to cases where defoliation was practically complete. When a 4 cm. stubble was left the effect of drought was relatively no more strong than in swards cut to only 12 cm. Defoliation alone causes heavy crop reductions even in moist soil, and these reductions are evidently more important quantitatively than those resulting from the interaction with soil moisture.  相似文献

The influence of agricultural practices (fertilization, mulch color, early forcing, and planting date), environment (light and growing area), cultivar, and fruit order on the selected phenolic content and antioxidant activity in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) fruits was studied. Three different levels of fertilization were given to plants in the fertilization experiment. The lowest fertilization level increased the contents of flavonols and ellagic acid from 19 to 57%. Between cultivars, up to 4-fold differences were found in the flavonol content, and it also varied according to growing environment. Planting date in glasshouse production was important for the phenolic content, and a statistically significant interaction was found between planting date and fruit order. Fruit order caused at highest 1.5-2.0-fold differences in the contents of phenolics. Interestingly, compared with other phenolics, anthocyanins were affected differently by many factors. Thus, the findings show that minor cultivation changes can increase the content of phenolics, especially in under-glass production where conditions can be easily manipulated.  相似文献

Phytophthora cactorum strains isolated from necrotic stem lesions on Betula pendula seedlings or from Fragaria ananassa plants suffering from crown rot were pathogenic to their host plants. Only isolates from birch caused clear lesions on non-wounded bark of birch. P. cactorum isolates from birch were not detrimental to strawberry. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis revealed variation within P. cactorum, isolates from silver birch having different banding patterns than those from strawberry. UPGMA analysis clustered isolates from silver birch and strawberry plants into separate groups. The data show that the recent outbreak in Finland of P. cactorum in birch could not be caused by the import of strawberry plants affected by crown rot.  相似文献

Benzothiadiazole (BTH) enhanced the accumulation of soluble and cell-wall-bound phenolics in strawberry leaves and also improved the resistance to powdery mildew infection under greenhouse conditions. The most pronounced change was seen in the levels of ellagitannins, which increased up to 2- to 6-fold 4 days after the BTH application, but persisted only in the inoculated plants. The induction of phenolic metabolism by BTH was also reflected in the fruits, several compounds being increased in inoculated, BTH-treated plants. Basal salicylic acid (SA) content was high in strawberry leaves, but increased in a similar fashion to other phenolics after the treatments. Several phenolic compounds were identified in strawberries for the first time. For example, ellagic acid deoxyhexose, three agrimoniin-like ellagitannins, sanguiin H-10- and lambertianin C-like ellagitannins in the leaves, ellagic acid, p-coumaric acid, gallic acid, and kaempferol hexose in the cell-wall-bound fraction of the leaves, and kaempferol malonylglucoside in the fruits. The findings show that BTH can enhance the accumulation of phenolics in strawberry plants which may then be involved in the BTH-induced resistance to powdery mildew.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to determine the utilization of iron (Fe) by lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Australian gelber). Iron was applied as 59Fe in inorganic and chelated form, particularly biodegradable chelate, 59Fe‐EDDS. Two stereoisomeric forms of ethylenediaminedisuccinate: [S,S]‐EDDS and a mixture of EDDS containing 25% [S,S]‐EDDS, 25% [R,R]‐EDDS, and 50% [S/R]/[R/S]‐EDDS, ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (EDTA) and ethylenediimino bis(2‐hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (EDDHA) were used as ligands. Lettuce was grown in unlimed and limed quartz sand with nitrate as the sole source of nitrogen. Liming decreased lettuce yields but had no effect on Fe concentrations, indicating that Fe concentrations were a poor indicator of Fe bioavailability within the plant. In unlimed sand, utilization of 59Fe from all 59Fe‐chelates was on the same level (2.8%–3.6%). In limed sand, only 59Fe‐EDDHA maintained the 59Fe utilization on a level (3%) comparable to that in unlimed sand. Although the utilization of 59Fe from the other chelates decreased to 0.6%–1.1% after liming, Fe concentrations were not affected due to the increased uptake of indigenous Fe. The most biodegradable form of EDDS, namely 59Fe‐EDDS(S,S), provided 59Fe for lettuce as efficiently as the mixture of 59Fe‐EDDS stereoisomers and the 59Fe‐EDTA. Utilization of 59Fe in inorganic form was 0.5% and 0.03% in unlimed and limed sand, respectively. This study shows that biodegradable ligands are able to serve as chelators to sustain Fe availability in calcareous environments. They may be of use especially in drip irrigation, where ligand accumulations may pose a threat to groundwater quality.  相似文献

The effect of soil and foliar application of different iron (Fe) compounds (FeSO4, Fe‐EDTA, Fe‐EDDS, and Fe‐EDDHA) on nutrient concentrations in lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. Australian gelber) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv. Prego) was investigated in a greenhouse pot experiment using quartz sand as growth medium. Soil application was performed in both the acidic and alkaline pH range, and foliar application to plants grown in the alkaline sand only. Lettuce growth was depressed by Fe deficiency in the alkaline sand, whereas the treatments had no effect on ryegrass growth. Soil‐applied Fe compounds raised the Fe concentrations in lettuce. This was especially true for the Fe chelates, which also increased yields. Soil‐applied Fe compounds had no statistically significant effect on Fe concentrations in ryegrass. Concentrations of manganese (Mn) in lettuce were equally decreased by all soil‐applied chelates. In the alkaline sand, soil application of Fe‐EDDHA elevated copper (Cu) and depressed zinc (Zn) concentrations in lettuce. The chelates increased Zn concentration in ryegrass. Foliar application of Fe‐EDDS increased Fe concentrations in lettuce and in ryegrass most. Fe‐EDDHA depressed Mn and Zn concentrations in lettuce more than other Fe compounds, suggesting the existence of another mechanism, in addition to Fe, that transmits a corresponding signal from shoot to roots with an impact on uptake of micronutrients.  相似文献

Evidence on habitat associations of threatened wood-inhabiting species in boreal forests may contribute to a better understanding of their ecology and conservation needs. We examined the diversity of wood-inhabiting fungal communities in an old-growth boreal forest with high substrate availability and continuity based on repeated surveys of fruit bodies. The number of species in morphological and functional groups in relation to coarse woody debris (CWD) attributes was estimated with generalized linear models. Additionally, we calculated species interaction networks of CWD attributes and fungal species. The composition of fungal communities was analysed using a non-metric multidimensional scaling with subsequent environmental fitting. Old conifer (especially spruce) logs and large aspen logs with branches represented the most important substrates for the red-listed species and the indicator species of old-growth boreal forests. Among “dynamic” CWD attributes such as time since tree death, decay class and stage of epixylic succession, the latter was the most important indicator of diversity of all species and their morphological and functional groups. The interaction network provided evidence of the importance of tree species diversity for fungal diversity. The composition of fungal communities was tree species specific and related to dynamic attributes, bark cover and diameter of logs. Our results suggest the importance of a continuum of dead wood from different tree species with a variety of niches such as branches, exposed wood, fragmented and complete cover of bark and patches of epixylic vegetation to maintain the assemblages of wood-inhabiting fungi in an old-growth boreal forest.  相似文献

Spermatogenesis is the process by which spermatogonial stem cells divide and differentiate to produce sperm. In vitro sperm production has been difficult to achieve because of the lack of a culture system to maintain viable spermatogonia for long periods of time. Here we report the in vitro generation of spermatocytes and spermatids from telomerase-immortalized mouse type A spermatogonial cells in the presence of stem cell factor. This differentiation can occur in the absence of supportive cells. The immortalized spermatogonial cell line may serve as a powerful tool in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of spermatogenesis. Furthermore, through genomic modification and transplantation techniques, this male germ cell line may be used to generate transgenic mice and to develop germ cell gene therapy.  相似文献
