Elevated CO2 stimulates crop yields but leads to lower tissue and grain nitrogen concentrations [N], raising concerns about grain quality in cereals. To test whether N fertiliser application above optimum growth requirements can alleviate the decline in tissue [N], wheat was grown in a Free Air CO2 Enrichment facility in a low‐rainfall cropping system on high soil N. Crops were grown with and without addition of 50–60 kg N/ha in 12 growing environments created by supplemental irrigation and two sowing dates over 3 years. Elevated CO2 increased yield and biomass (on average by 25%) and decreased biomass [N] (3%–9%) and grain [N] (5%). Nitrogen uptake was greater (20%) in crops grown under elevated CO2. Additional N supply had no effect on yield and biomass, confirming high soil N. Small increases in [N] with N addition were insufficient to offset declines in grain [N] under elevated CO2. Instead, N application increased the [N] in straw and decreased N harvest index. The results suggest that conventional addition of N does not mitigate grain [N] depression under elevated CO2, and lend support to hypotheses that link decreases in crop [N] with biochemical limitations rather than N supply.  相似文献

An 11‐year‐old, male neutered Jack Russell Terrier was presented with a nerve root signature of the right pelvic limb. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well demarcated, ovoid, extramedullary mass at the level of the L7 vertebral body. This showed, compared to normal spinal cord, hyperintense signal on T1‐ and T2‐weighted images, which was suppressed on gradient echo short tau inversion recovery (GE‐STIR) images. Additionally, the mass was characterized by a fat density on computed tomography images. Histopathology of the surgically excised mass was consistent with concentric periradicular lipoma, which has not been described in domestic animals yet.  相似文献

Three well-known dynamic acidification models (MAGIC, SAFE, SMART) were applied to data sets from five Integrated Monitoring sites in Europe. The calibrated models were used in a policy-oriented framework to predict the long-term soil acidification of these background forest sites, given different scenarios of future deposition of S and N. Emphasis was put on deriving realistic site-specific scenarios for the model applications. The deposition was calculated with EMEP transfer matrices and official emissions for the target years 2000, 2005 and 2010. The alternatives for S deposition were current reduction plans and maximum feasible reductions. For N, the NOx and NHy depositions were frozen at the present level. For NOx, a reduction scenario of flat 30% reduction from present deposition also was utilized to demonstrate the possible effects of such a measure. The three models yielded generally consistent results. The ‘Best prediction’-scenario (including the effects of the second UN/ECE protocol for reductions of SO2 emissions and present level for NOx-emissions), resulted in many cases in a stabilization of soil acidification, although significant improvements were not always shown. With the exception of one site, the ‘Maximum Feasible Reductions’ scenario always resulted in significant improvements. Dynamic models are needed as a complement to steady-state techniques for estimating critical loads and assessing emission reduction policies, where adequate data are available.  相似文献

1. Contamination of retail products with Campylobacter spp. during the slaughter of poultry is a well-known problem of product hygiene. Mechanical evisceration often leads to intestinal rupture and discharge of gut contents, which can contain zoonotic and human pathogens. Processes along the slaughter line cause aerosols and airborne droplets, containing bacterial loads. 2. To estimate the possible transmission routes of intestinal Campylobacter, 36 measurements of the bioaerosol (Andersen sampler and SKC BioSampler), 30 cloacal (of three flocks), 10 equipment and 4 sedimentation samples were tested for the presence of Campylobacter species. 3. The results imply that, in addition to contaminated equipment, which was Campylobacter-positive in 80% of cases, aerosols with peak values of 4.0 x 10(4) (test series 1) and 1.4 x 10(4) (test series 2) CFU/m3 also provide a potential vector for horizontal transmission. 4. To explore the genetic similarities of isolates from different origins, 18 isolates recovered from air, 26 cloacal, 8 equipment and 4 sedimentation isolates were analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), using the restriction enzymes Sma I and Sal I. The similarity of cloacal isolates with isolates from equipment, air and sediment, suggest that the contamination is of intestinal origin. 5. There were direct links between Campylobacter-positive flocks and the presence of the same strains in the aerosol of the slaughter hall. Air as a potential source for microbial transmission must be taken into account.  相似文献

The integrated assessment modeling on acid rain has incorporated several related effects and pollutants into a multi-pollutant/multi-effect approach, resulting in complex integrated models and policy assessments. The development and implementation of effects-oriented cost-effective emission reduction strategies in Europe are based on integrated assessment models. The project on national integrated assessment modeling in Finland, Denmark, Spain and Sweden aimed to support the national evaluation of European emission reduction strategies. The tasks covered the comparison of inventories and projections for emissions of sulfur, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and volatile organic compounds, assessment of control techniques and related costs, concentration and deposition scenarios to estimate environmental effects of acidification, eutrophication and ground-level ozone and their temporal aspects, uncertainty analyses on both individual modules and whole integrated models, and dissemination of results to stakeholders. The integrated assessment modeling provided a consistent framework for the harmonization of input data and in-depth scientific research tasks on emissions, pollutant loading and impacts including comprehensive uncertainty analyses, and facilitated the dissemination of knowledge to policy-makers.  相似文献

A soil acidification model has been developed to estimate long-term chemical changes in soil and soil water in response to changes in atmospheric deposition. Its major outputs include base saturation, pH and the molar Al/BC ratio, where BC stands for divalent base cations. Apart from net uptake and net immobilization of N, the processes accounted for are restricted to geochemical interactions, including weathering of carbonates, silicates and Al oxides and hydroxides, cation exchange and CO2 equilibriums. First, the model's behavior in the different buffer ranges between pH 7 and pH 3 is evaluated by analyzing the response of an initially calcareous soil of 50 cm depth to a constant high acid load (5000 molc ha?1 yr?1) over a period of 500 yr. In calcareous soils weathering is fast and the pH remains high (near 7) until the carbonates are exhausted. Results indicate a time lag of about 100 yr for each percent CaCO3 before the pH starts to drop. In non-calcareous soils the response in the range between pH 7 and 4 mainly depends on the initial amount of exchangeable base cations. A decrease in base saturation by H/BC exchange and Al/BC exchange following dissolution of Al3+ leads to a strong increase in the Al/BC ratio near pH 4. A further decrease in pH to values near 3.0 does occur when the A1 oxides and/or hydroxides are exhausted. The analyses show that this could occur in acid soils within several decades. The buffer mechanisms in the various pH ranges are discussed in relation to Ulrich's concept of buffer ranges. Secondly, the impact of various deposition scenarios on non-calcareous soils is analyzed for a time period of 100 yr. The results indicate that the time lag between reductions in deposition and a decrease in the Al/BC ratio is short. However, substantial reductions up to a final deposition level of 1000 molc ha?1 yr?1 are needed to get Al/BC ratios below a critical value of 1.0.  相似文献

This paper presents an explorative, quantitative analysis of acidification and eutrophication of natural terrestrial ecosystems caused by excess sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) deposition. The analysis is based on a steady-state approach, involving the comparison of deposition fluxes with critical loads to identify areas where critical loads are exceeded. Deposition fields for sulfur and nitrogen were obtained from the STOCHEM global chemistry-transport model, and they were combined with estimated base cation deposition to derive net acid deposition fluxes. The results indicate that the critical loads for acidification are exceeded in 7–17% of the global area of natural ecosystems. In addition, comparison of nitrogen deposition with critical loads for eutrophication yielded an exceedance in 7–18% of the global natural ecosystems. Apart from serious problems in the heavily industrialized regions of eastern USA, Europe, the former Soviet Union, and large parts of Asia, risks are also found in parts of South America, and West, East and Southern Africa. Both acidification and eutrophication risks could significantly increase in Asia, Africa and South America in the near future, and decrease in North America and Western Europe. Accounting for the effects of N in the analysis of acidification significantly enlarges the potentially affected areas and moves them away from highly industrialized areas compared to studies considering S deposition alone. Major uncertainties in the approach followed are associated with upscaling, the estimates of S, N and base cation emission and deposition fluxes, the critical loads to describe ecosystem vulnerability and the treatment of soil N immobilization and denitrification.  相似文献

This paper presents one of the first integrated analyses of acidification and climate change on a geographically-detailed basis, and the first linkage of integrated models for acid deposition (RAINS) and for climate change (IMAGE 2). Emphasis in this paper is on Europe. Trends in driving forces of emissions are used to compute anthropogenic SO2 emissions in 13 world regions. These emissions are translated into regional patterns of sulfur deposition in Europe and global patterns of sulfate aerosols using source-receptor matrices. Changes in climate are then computed based on changes in sulfate and greenhouse gases. Finally, we compute ecosystem areas affected by acid deposition and climate change based on exceedances of critical loads and changes in potential vegetation. Using this framework, information from global and regional integrated models can be used to link sulfur emissions with both their global and regional consequences. Preliminary calculations indicate that the size of European area affected by climate change in 2100 (58%) will be about the same as that affected by acid deposition in 1990. By the mid 21st century, about 14% of Europe's area may be affected by both acid deposition and climate change. Also, reducing sulfur emissions in Europe will have both the desirable impact of reducing the area affected by acid deposition, and the undesirable impact of enhancing climate warming in Europe and thus increasing the area affected by climate change. However, for the scenarios in this paper, the desirable impact of reducing sulfur emissions greatly outweighs its undesirable impact.  相似文献
