As a key parameter in the management of fish populations, individual growth rate (GR) variations were examined in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla; > 150 mm) using extensive mark–recapture surveys in the lotic habitats of two small rivers of western France: the Frémur, supposed to be saturated, and at the same latitude, the Oir with densities fivefold lower than those of the Frémur. In both systems, generalised linear models were used to test whether spatiotemporal factors such as dominant habitat type or local density affect GR variability. In the presumed unsaturated system, the Oir, GR variability is mainly explained by a set of habitat suitability drivers (density, dominant habitat type). In the Frémur, GRs appear independent of differences in habitat density or productivity. Below saturation, an increase in density will decrease the GR through intraspecific competition. At saturation, intraspecific competition reaches such high levels that regardless of eel density and productivity, the resources available by individual are similar throughout the system. In these circumstances, the effect of density on growth was presumed undetectable. Despite these contrasted results, mean GRs observed in both catchments were closed (~20 mm·year?1). This is an unexpected result as GR is expected to be higher in unsaturated systems. This similarity could be explained by the difference between the two systems in terms of: (i) sex ratio (the Frémur is dominated by male, whereas the female is dominant in the Oir), (ii) habitat type distribution or (iii) possible interspecific competition (important salmonid populations in the Oir). 相似文献
Summary Starch gel electrophoresis was used to assess isozyme polymorphism in two Manihot species. Crude extracts were obtained from leaves and pollen. Ten enzymes were examined for their polymorphism in a germplasm collection of 365 cultivated plus 109 wild accessions, mainly from Africa. The inheritance of these enzymes was examined using 13 intra and interspecific progenies. Seventeen polymorphic loci were found for the ten enzyme systems, with 59 alleles. All the markers showed disomic heredity and three linkage groups were identified. 相似文献
Summary The use of random amplified DNA fragments as genetic markers in Coffea was investigated. Arbitrary oligonucleotides were used as primers to amplify genomic DNA of different coffee accessions representing major Coffea species by polymerase chain reaction. Intraspecific variation was easily detected in C. canephora and C. liberica whereas the primers assayed failed to reveal polymorphism between C. arabica accessions. Extensive interspecific variation was observed. Genetic relationships between Coffea species are deduced from the degrees of similarity in amplified product profiles. Random amplified DNA markers appeared to be of high value for characterization, analysis and utilization of coffee genetic resources. 相似文献
Direct, non-invasive X-ray microtomography and optical technique observations applied in stems and leaves of intact seedlings revealed that laurel is highly resistant to drought-induced xylem embolism. Contrary to what has been brought forward, daily cycles of embolism formation and refilling are unlikely to occur in this species and to explain how it copes with drought.
Context
There has been considerable controversy regarding xylem embolism resistance for long-vesselled angiosperm species and particularly for the model species for refilling (Laurus nobilis L.).
Aims
The purpose of this study was to resolve the hydraulic properties of this species by documenting vulnerability curves of different organs in intact plants.
Methods
Here, we applied a direct, non-invasive method to visualize xylem embolism in stems and leaves of intact laurel seedlings up to 2-m tall using X-ray microtomography (microCT) observations and the optical vulnerability technique. These approaches were coupled with complementary centrifugation measurements performed on 1-m long branches sampled from adult trees and compared with additional microCT analyses carried out on 80-cm cut branches.
Results
Direct observations of embolism spread during desiccation of intact laurels revealed that 50% loss of xylem conductivity (Ψ50) was reached at ??7.9?±?0.5 and ??8.4?±?0.3 MPa in stems and leaves, respectively, while the minimum xylem water potentials measured in the field were ??4.2 MPa during a moderate drought season. Those findings reveal that embolism formation is not routine in Laurus nobilis contrary to what has been previously reported. These Ψ50 values were close to those based on the flow-centrifuge technique (??9.2?±?0.2 MPa), but at odds with microCT observations of cut branches (??4.0?±?0.5 MPa).
Conclusion
In summary, independent methods converge toward the same conclusion that laurel is highly resistant to xylem embolism regardless its development stage. Under typical growth conditions without extreme drought events, this species maintains positive hydraulic safety margin, while daily cycles of embolism formation and refilling are unlikely to occur in this species.
Coffee wilt disease (CWD) caused by Fusarium xylarioides, considered to be a soil-inhabiting fungus, is endemic in several African countries, affecting commercially important coffee
species and causing serious economic losses. Coffee wilt disease development in naturally infected Coffea canephora fields at the Coffee Research Institute in Uganda was assessed from April 2001 to March 2006 to generate information about
temporal and spatial spread of the disease. Maps of diseased trees were also generated from the data. Semi-variance analysis
was performed on the data to show the spatio-temporal structure of disease. Host influence on the spatio-temporal structure
was deduced from the distribution pattern of diseased and healthy trees and analysis of variance. Results show that the temporal
disease epidemic progress was slow. The disease was found to spread from initial infections to healthy neighbouring trees,
resulting in an aggregated pattern. An infected tree could infect up to three healthy trees away, in any direction. Disease
foci formed and expanded with time, coalescing but punctuated in spots planted with resistant hosts. There were varying levels
of susceptibility among host genotypes, affecting the rates and levels of epidemic development. The implications of the findings
to the control of CWD are discussed. 相似文献
The effects of a long term treatment with human GRF(1–29)NH2 on plasma growth hormone (GH), somatomedin C (Sm-C), histomorphometric parameters of bone growth and body composition were investigated in normal and low birthweight male lambs. The animals were divided into two groups according to their birthweight: 24 normal birthweight (NBW) lambs weighing more than 4 kg and 22 low birthweight (LBW) lambs weighing less than 2.5 kg at birth. Half of the animals in each group received two daily subcutaneous injections (8 μg/kg body weight) of hGRF(1–29)NH2 (GRF) from birth to slaughter at 45 or 90 days of age. The other animals received the solvant only. At the beginning and at the end of the treatment, plasma GH and serum Sm-C concentrations were measured in all groups. After slaughter, a histomorphometric study was performed on undecalcified sections of metacarpal growth plates, and the remaining of the carcass was pulverized to study the chemical body composition.
GRF induced GH release in both GRF-treated groups. However, plasma GH reached higher (P<.001) concentrations and the GRF-induced GH peak lasted longer in LBW than in NBW lambs. At day 45, the GRF treatment increased (P<.05) serum Sm-C concentrations in LBW. Most of histomorphometric parameters reflecting the metacarpal growth in length, were not statistically modified under GRF treatment. However, the size of degenerative cells was smaller (P<.05) in LBW treated lambs as compared to controls. Consequently, the cell production in the growth plate was increased (P<.05) under GRF treatment. In both NBW and LBW groups at 45 days of treatment, GRF treatment reduced the amounts of lipids (P<.025) and energy (P<.05), while increased (P<.01) phosphorus deposition in the body. In contrast, there was no effect of GRF treatment on protein content.
We conclude from this experiment that the induction of GH secretion by a chronic treatment with GRF is able to modify some patterns of growth. However, most of the effects of GRF were observed in LBW lambs and after 45 days of treatment only. This suggests that treatment with GRF may serve to compensate for growth in growth-retarded animals. Further studies with different mode of GRF administration should indicate whether it is as much effective in normal animals. 相似文献
Summary Genetic parameters were estimated in trials planted in connection with a reciprocal recurrent selection programme applied to Coffea canephora in Côte d'Ivoire. Narrow sense heritability values, estimated from a breakdown of the analysis of variance, were high for architectural characters (0.22 to 0.78) and medium for tree vigour (0.13 to 0.40) and for bean weight (0.15 to 0.28). Calculated heritability values for the first two harvests were high (h2>0.7), but much lower for the following harvests (less than 0.2). Heritability estimates by parent-offspring regressions gave variable results, though they were often similar to those obtained by variance analysis, especially for bean weight. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between tree vigour traits and productivity were high. Bean weight was not correlated with vigour or production. Canopy diameter of 4 year-old trees was closely correlated with cumulated productivity from 2 to 5 years in the absence of development competition between trees, but the correlation was low if trees were in competition with each other. The consequences of the results for the choice of characters to be selected among intergroup hybrids or the parents of both populations are discussed. 相似文献
Genetic diversity was studied using RAPD markers among119 coffee (Coffea arabica L.) individuals representing 88 accessions derived from spontaneous and subspontaneous trees in Ethiopia, the primary centre
of species diversity, six cultivars grown locally in Ethiopia, and two accessions derived from the genetic populations Typica
and Bourbon, spread in the 18th century, which gave rise to the most currently grown cultivars. Twenty-nine polymorphic fragments were used to calculate
a similarity index and construct dendrograms. The Ethiopian material was separated from the Typica- and Bourbon-derived accessions
and classified in four groups: one with most of the collected material from southwestern Ethiopia and three from southern
and southeastern Ethiopia. Almost all detected diversity was found in the southwestern group while the southern and southeastern
groups presented only 59% of identified markers. The genetic distances were low between the southwestern group and the southern
and southeastern groups, and between the southwestern group and the Typica- and Bourbon-derived accessions. The cultivated
coffee derived from the genetic populations Typica and Bourbon appeared little differentiated from wild coffee growing in
the southwest. The results supported the hypothesis that southwestern Ethiopian coffee trees could have been introduced recently
in the south and southeast. A separate analysis of the 80accessions classified in the southwestern group allowed identifying
particular spontaneous- and subspontaneous-derived accessions and redundancies in the collected material from southwestern
Ethiopia. RAPD markers did not detect any within-collection polymorphism except for two trees that were identified as off-types
in the CATIE field genebank.
