BACKGROUND: There is concern that pesticide residues on the external surfaces of sprayers could have an adverse impact on the environment if they are washed off, yet there is a need to remove these residues for health reasons. The aim of this study was to quantify pesticide residues contained in washings from cleaning discrete parts of a sprayer and to assess their likely environmental impact. RESULTS: The boom/rear of the sprayer and the spray tank accounted for 80% of the total pesticide load in the washings. Predicted environmental pesticide concentrations from sprayer washings were lower than predictions from the FOCUS surface water model for pesticides used under normal agricultural conditions, although for tebuconazole this difference was smaller than for the other compounds investigated. The field area over which the residues may need to be uniformly deposited to avoid overdosing during infield cleaning was typically less than 0.5 m(2), with a maximum value of 4 m(2). CONCLUSIONS: It is unlikely that infield cleaning will lead to overdosing. External residues are not insignificant, so any adverse impact on the environment must be mitigated. Appropriate measures include cleaning in the field away from surface waters and other sensitive areas, and cleaning machines over bunded areas or similar.  相似文献

The elemental (including silica (Si), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe)) and nutrient composition of peatland surface pools and concentrations of Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fein peat interstitial waters and surface peat concentrations of oxides of Mn and Fe were determined for 15 peatlands sampled along a mineral gradient. Surface pool concentrations of Si wereca. ten fold less in surface pools of mineral-poor peatlands thanin the mineral rich, supporting the use of this element as an indicator of minerotrophic influence in peatlands. Principle component analysis of surface pool water chemistry parametersdifferentiated mineral-poor and moderately-poor peatlands frommineral-rich peatlands based on the concentrations of Ca, Mgand alkalinity of pools. Several lines of evidence indicated that peatland interstitial waters were important contributors to peatland alkalinity and included; (1) maximum interstitial water concentrations of Ca and Mg correlating with overlying surface pool alkalinity, (2) a negative correlation between interstitial water Ca:Mg ratios and surface pool concentrationsof Si and (3) Ca:Mg ratios of moderately-poor to mineral-poorpeatland interstitial waters approaching the Ca:Mg ratio of rainwater rather than those of bedrock. Interstitial water concentrations of dissolved Mn and Fe correlated with amountsof reducible Fe and Mn (oxides of Fe and Mn) recovered from thepeat/water interface indicating that groundwater inputs areimportant sources of these two elements to fens. As a consequence, for peatlands that are not truly ombrotrophic,groundwater inputs of Mn and Fe may interfere with interpretingpeat metal profiles thought to be due to anthropogenic inputs alone.  相似文献

West African Dwarf goats (WADs) and their Saanen crosses were experimentally infected with Trypanosoma congolense. No significant differences were found between trypanosome parasitaemia and antibody response of the crossbred and WAD goats. Neither the WAD goats nor the Saanen crosses were able to control the drop in PCV following trypanosome infection. The level of anaemia caused by the trypanosome infection was similar in the two breeds during the trial. Based on these findings, no difference in tolerance or susceptibility to T. congolense could be demonstrated between the WAD goats and their Saanen crosses. Although the weight of all goats increased during the trial, the crosses gained significantly more weight than the WAD goats. The trypanosome infection reduced the growth rate of both breeds, but this reduction was not statistically significant. Crossbreeding trypanotolerant WADs with trypanosusceptible Saanen goats might, therefore, be an effective means of increasing productivity.  相似文献

Biomass represents an abundant carbon-neutral renewable resource for the production of bioenergy and biomaterials, and its enhanced use would address several societal needs. Advances in genetics, biotechnology, process chemistry, and engineering are leading to a new manufacturing concept for converting renewable biomass to valuable fuels and products, generally referred to as the biorefinery. The integration of agroenergy crops and biorefinery manufacturing technologies offers the potential for the development of sustainable biopower and biomaterials that will lead to a new manufacturing paradigm.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to provide epidemiological information of equine trypanosomosis in the Central River Division (CRD) of The Gambia. Therefore, 2285 consultations records of equines, admitted in a gate-clinic at Sololo in CRD, were studied retrospectively. The data were recorded in the period between September 1995 and July 2002 and comprised consultations of 2113 horses and 172 donkeys.

‘Trypanosome infection’ was the most frequently diagnosed condition and accounted for 61% of the cases. Horses were more frequently diagnosed with trypanosome infections than donkeys (p < 0.001), with an occurrence of 63% compared to 43% in donkeys. In both horses and donkeys, trypanosome infections were mainly due to Trypanosoma congolense (64%) and T. vivax (32%). There was no difference observed in the occurrence of trypanosome infections in male or female donkeys (p = 0.585), but there were more female (67.8%) horses observed with trypanosome infections than male horses (60.7%; p = 0.003). There was no difference observed in the occurrence of trypanosome infections in donkeys older or younger than 1 year (p = 0.130), but more older horses (63.2% >1 year) were observed with trypanosome infections than young horses (54.5% <1 year; p = 0.033).

The number of donkeys and horses with trypanosome infections decreased during the rainy season (June–September).

The majority of equines that were admitted with trypanosome infections were severely anaemic. The average packed cell volume (PCV) declined with increasing parasitaemia (p = 0.006).

Seventy-four percent of the farmers’ predictions of trypanosome infections in their equines were confirmed by darkground-microscopy. That proved that farmers had a fairly accurate knowledge of the diseases affecting their equines.

The treatments executed at the gate-clinic were generally effective. The few (0.4%) relapses of the T. vivax infections that were previously treated with diminazene aceturate in this study were not sufficient to prove drug resistance.

The study showed that the analysis of consultation records at a gate-clinic can provide complementary information to conventional epidemiological studies in the same research area.  相似文献

West African N'Dama cattle have developed a genetic capacity to survive, reproduce and remain productive under trypanosomosis risk. The cellular and molecular bases of this so-called trypanotolerance are not known, but the trait is manifested by the N'Dama's greater capacity to control parasitaemia and anaemia development during an infection. In order to examine the role of the haematopoietic system in trypanotolerance, we have exploited the tendency for the placentas of bovine twin embryos to fuse. Placental fusion in cattle results in bone marrow chimaerism in twins. By comparison with the N'Dama, cattle of the East African Boran breed are relatively susceptible. We evaluated the role of the haemopoietic system in trypanotolerance by comparing the performance of five Chimaeric Boran/N'Dama twin calves with that of singletons of the two breeds. Chimaeric Boran/N'Dama pairs of twins were produced in recipient Boran cows by embryo transfer, and the majority of haemopoietic cells in all twinned individuals were of Boran origin. Thus, N'Dama chimaeras differed from N'Dama singletons in that the bulk of their haemopoietic system was derived from their susceptible Boran twins, while Boran chimaeras differed little from Boran control animals. All cattle became parasitaemic and developed anaemia. The N'Dama chimaeras did not manage their anaemia and white blood cell counts effectively. However, they were able to limit parasitaemia development. These results suggest that trypanotolerance is the result of two mechanisms, one that improves parasite control and is independent of the genetic origin of the haemopoietic tissue, and another that is influenced by haemopoietic tissue genotype and which improves control over anaemia. The capacity to maintain growth during infection was similarly dependent on the genetic origin of the haemopoietic tissue.  相似文献

The new pour-on insecticides that can be used to control tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis confer benefits to the owners of the cattle given treatments and other people keeping cattle in areas affected by the control. A study was conducted in southwest Ethiopia to assess farmers' perceptions of the public and private benefits of the pour-on and identify the household-level factors affecting its demand. Ninety-seven percent of the 166 survey respondents had received pour-on treatments when they were free and 67% paid for treatments the month before the survey. Farmers noted public and private benefits from using the pour-on, the most important of which were less trypanosomiasis, fewer problems with biting flies (including tsetse), and fewer problems with ticks. The probit model estimated to quantify the effects of different variables indicates that proportions of cows and oxen, distance to the treatment centre, and seasonal factors were significant determinants of demand.  相似文献

The lethality, anaesthetic and physiological effects of pulsed cyanide (CN-) exposures to a common tropical marine fish Dascyllus aruanus were assessed. Cyanide (25 and 50 mg l-1) was applied as pulses (10, 60 and 120 s) to fish under non-stressed and stressed (by chasing and/or placing fish under hypoxic stress) conditions. Following treatment, the time until recovery and the percent survival were determined. The fish were allowed a 2.5 week recovery period from the treatments at which time four physiological end-points were measured: (1) the blood haemoglobin content, (2) the percent blood O-2 content, (3) the liver rhodonase activity and (4) the liver O2 consumption rate. The greater the CN- concentration and exposure time, the longer the recovery time. Non-stressed fish exposed to 10 s pulses of 25 mg l-1 of CN- fully recovered within 4 min whereas fish exposed for 60 s and 50 mg l-1 of CN- required up to 50 min for full recovery. Exposure for 120 s at 25 and 50 mg l-1 of CN- proved lethal. Under stressed conditions, previously non-lethal exposures (60 s and 50 mg l-1) were lethal. Of the physiological end-points, only the liver O2 consumption rate was indicative of previous CN- exposure. Under non-stressed conditions, pulsed exposures at 25 and 50 mg l-1 of CN- for 10 and 60 s significantly reduced the liver O2 consumption rates (ANOVA; p < 0.05). Under stressed conditions, the liver O2 consumption rates were significantly greater (maximum rates up to 17-fold greater) than the control fish (ANOVA; p < 0.05). We conclude, therefore, that environmentally relevant exposures of CN- can adversely effect fish and this affect can be measured 2.5 weeks post-exposure. Importantly, the combined effects of exposure and stress both increased the mortality and placed an appreciable metabolic load on the fish as indicated by the elevated liver O2 consumption rates. Handling stress in combination with anaesthetic CN- doses could in part explain the delayed mortality reportedly associated with CN- use in the tropical fish trade. Patterns of antimicrobial resistance were determined for lactose-fermenting fecal coliforms obtained during a 20-month period from pigs in a herd without exposure to antimicrobial drugs for 126 months. Mean percent resistance to cephalothin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, naladixic acid, streptomycin and tetracycline was lower (P less than 0.01) for isolates obtained during the 20-month period (Group 2) than for isolates obtained during the first 13 months (Group 1) after the withdrawal of antibiotics. Mean tetracycline resistance was 40.5% for Group 2 isolates. Approximately 44% of the Group 2 isolates were resistant to the 10 antimicrobial agents compared with 74.9% for the Group 1 isolates (P less than 0.01). Multiple resistance was lower (P less than 0.01) in the Group 2 isolates than in the Group 1 isolates. Four resistance patterns (tetracycline, tetracycline-streptomycin, tetracycline-sulfisoxazole, tetracycline-streptomycin-sulfisoxazole) accounted for 74% of the resistant isolates.  相似文献

A tsetse control campaign was started in January 1991 using a synthetic pyrethroid cypermethrin 'pour-on' applied monthly to cattle exposed to high levels of drug-resistant trypanosomes in the Ghibe valley of southwest Ethiopia. In December 1992, a cost-recovery scheme was introduced, and thereafter farmers paid for treatment. An average of 100 village Ethiopian Highland Zebu cattle were monitored monthly from March 1986 to February 1997. Individual animals in this herd were treated with diminazene aceturate (Berenil, Hoechst, Germany) at 3.5 mg/kg when trypanosomes were detected and their packed cell volume was less than 26%. Superimposed on this systematic trypanocidal chemotherapy, control of tsetse resulted in average reductions from 1992 to 1996 of 95% and 75% in the mean relative densities of tsetse and biting flies, respectively, and of 63% in the prevalence of trypanosomal infections in cattle. Despite these reductions, there was no significant increase in the body weight of the cows, calving rate or the mean body weight of calves at 12 months of age. There was, however, an average decrease of 57% in calf mortality (including still births) by 12 months of age, an increase of 49% in the ratio of live calves under 12 months of age to cows over 36 months of age, and an increase of 8% in the body weight of adult males.  相似文献
