Forty-two pigs in a herd of 117 displayed various clinical signs of progressive atrophic rhinitis. The main signs included sneezing, coughing, lachrymation, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, and nasal bleeding in 1 pig. Three pigs had lateral deviation of the snout, while 4 had brachygnathia superior with obvious deformation of the face. Four acutely affected weaner pigs appeared weak, while the 7 chronically-affected pigs appeared smaller than their apparently unaffected penmates of the same age. Treatment of the acutely affected pigs with long-acting oxytetracycline at 20 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly, repeated once after 7 days, reduced the severity but did not clear the sneezing from all the pigs. Fifteen pigs were slaughtered 2 months after the clinical diagnosis was made. The carcasses of the chronically affected pigs were about 15% lighter than those of the apparently normal pigs of the same age and from the same pen, which translated to a loss of 921.00 Kenya shillings per pig (US$13.7). Diagnosis of progressive atrophic rhinitis was confirmed by sectioning the snouts of randomly selected slaughtered pigs with obvious deformation of the snout. Sections were made at the level of the 1st/2nd upper premolar tooth. Varying degrees of turbinate atrophy, from mild to complete, were noted. Histopathology of the turbinates revealed metaplasia of nasal epithelium and fibrosis in the lamina propria. 相似文献

The incidence of trypanosome infection was monitored in dairy cattle during a 6-month trial in Busia and Teso districts, western
Kenya, to assess the efficacy of insecticide-treated netting for protection against tsetse flies. Frequently, the fragile
netting did not last longer than 2 months because of destruction by strong wind or animal movements. Also, many farmers let
their cattle graze freely outside the units during the day, despite technical advice, resulting in exposure of the free-ranging
animals to habitats suitable for tsetse and thereby an increased risk of trypanosome infections. The trial groups thus comprised
34 animals from 11 dairy units that were continuously protected, and 153 animals from 46 dairy units that were partially protected.
The control group consisted of 162 animals in 42 unprotected units. The phase-contrast buffy-coat technique was used for parasitological
monitoring. The mean hazard rate for trypanosomes was significantly lower in protected cows, with a value of 0.007 as opposed
to 0.02 for the control animals. Mean packed cell volumes (PCV) were significantly higher in protected cattle (29.7%) than
in unprotected ones (27.6%). Farmers with protected animals also reported fewer nuisance flies and mosquitoes in their compounds. 相似文献

Although the biological advantages in terms of animal production and improved soil fertility of the use of herbaceous legumes
have been well demonstrated in Kenya and elsewhere, adoption by small-scale farmers has often been disappointing. This has
led to increased research into the use of both indigenous and exotic fodder trees. In common with conventional pasture legumes,
tree fodders contain high levels of crude protein and minerals and many show high levels of digestibility. They are readily
accepted by livestock and presumably because of their deep-root systems, they continue to produce well into the dry season.
Antinutritive factors can be a problem, however, and polyphenolics, toxic amino acids, cyanogenic glycosides and alkaloids
are found in many tree species. There are abundant niches on small farms where fodder trees can be grown without affecting
crop production. Although detailed management recommendations are lacking, guidelines exist with regard to appropriate cutting
heights and harvesting frequencies. In the Embu region, it has been estimated that three kg of fresh fodder of Calliandra
calothyrsus has the same effect on milk production as one kg of commercial dairy meal. Up to about 500 trees (250 m of hedgerow)
will produce enough fodder to supplement one dairy cow for a complete lactation. The tree fodder can either replace the concentrate
without loss of yield, or it can complement it to produce more milk. It is being enthusiastically adopted by small-scale farmers,
many of whom are starting to produce their own seed. Other tree species are now being studied in order to avoid over-reliance
on a single fodder species.

Measurement of boron isotope compositions in species of planktonic foraminifera that calcified their tests at different depths in the water column are used to reconstruct the pH profile of the upper water column of the tropical ocean. Results for five time windows from the middle Miocene to the late Pleistocene indicate pH-depth profiles similar to that of the modern ocean in this area, which suggests that this method may greatly aid in our understanding of the global carbon cycle. 相似文献

Free-standing aligned carbon nanotubes have previously been grown above 700 degreesC on mesoporous silica embedded with iron nanoparticles. Here, carbon nanotubes aligned over areas up to several square centimeters were grown on nickel-coated glass below 666 degreesC by plasma-enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition. Acetylene gas was used as the carbon source and ammonia gas was used as a catalyst and dilution gas. Nanotubes with controllable diameters from 20 to 400 nanometers and lengths from 0. 1 to 50 micrometers were obtained. Using this method, large panels of aligned carbon nanotubes can be made under conditions that are suitable for device fabrication. 相似文献

Biomonitoring of rivers is usually undertaken using information based on macroinvertebrate assemblages. However, exclusion of meiofauna (i.e. invertebrates less than 0.5?mm in size) when sorting benthic invertebrates can affect the estimation of densities and other biotic indices. In the present study, the effect of excluding the less than 0.5?mm fraction of invertebrates on estimation of benthic invertebrate indices was investigated in the Naro Moru River, Kenya. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index, Pielou’s evenness index, a multimetric index, Simpson’s diversity index, Margalef’s diversity index, mean invertebrate density, taxa richness, and Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) densities were determined. Only mean invertebrate and EPT densities differed significantly between the greater than 0.5?mm and total fractions. In conclusion, exclusion of meiofauna from invertebrate samples can affect the estimation of some stream invertebrate biotic indices. 相似文献
