Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. A genome-wide search yielded multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 15q24.1 region associated with glaucoma. Further investigation revealed that the association is confined to exfoliation glaucoma (XFG). Two nonsynonymous SNPs in exon 1 of the gene LOXL1 explain the association, and the data suggest that they confer risk of XFG mainly through exfoliation syndrome (XFS). About 25% of the general population is homozygous for the highest-risk haplotype, and their risk of suffering from XFG is more than 100 times that of individuals carrying only low-risk haplotypes. The population-attributable risk is more than 99%. The product of LOXL1 catalyzes the formation of elastin fibers found to be a major component of the lesions in XFG.  相似文献

The nitrogen-fixing capacity of a range of commercial cultivars of maize (Zea mays L.) was evaluated by the 15N isotope-dilution method. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) expressed as percent nitrogen derived from air (Ndfa) ranged from 12 to 33 regardless of nitrogen fertilization. BNF was not affected by mineral nitrogen fertilization except on cultivar Topacio and PAU-871 cultivars. Subsequently, culturable bacterial diazotrophs were isolated from endophytic tissue of maize: seed, root, stem, and leaf. All isolates were able to grow on N-free semisolid medium. Eleven bacteria isolates showed nitrogen-fixing capacity by the reduction of acetylene to ethylene and confirmed by PCR the presence of nifH gene in their genome. Identification of the 11 isolates was performed by bacteriological methods, 16S rRNA gene sequences, and phylogenetic analysis, which indicated that the bacteria isolated were closely related to Pantoea, Pseudomonas, Rhanella, Herbaspirillum, Azospirillum, Rhizobium (Agrobacterium), and Brevundimonas. This study demonstrated that maize cultivars obtain significant nitrogen from BNF, varying by maize cultivar and nitrogen fertilization level. The endophytic diazotrophic bacteria isolated from root, stem, and leaf tissues of maize cultivars may contribute to BNF in these plants.  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of temperature on growth, development and crude protein content of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) was investigated. Plants were grown in pots outdoors and placed in four growth chambers at different mean temperatures (8, 12, 16 and 20°C) and at three different phenological stages in order to study the interaction between temperature, development and growth. They were then harvested at weekly intervals for up to six weeks. Pots left outdoors were harvested at the same time. The dry matter yield of shoots and roots, number of tillers per plant, plant height and crude protein content in shoots and roots were recorded.  相似文献

The body weight of horses is an interesting variable for horse owners, as well as for veterinarians. It is useful to have methods of estimation like weight tape or formula, rather than visual estimation, when a weight scale is not available. Different methods of weight estimation exist for adult horses, but to date, there has been no validation of these methods in Icelandic horses. Therefore, three different methods of weight determination (weight scale, weight tape, and weight formula) were compared in this study to investigate whether it is possible to obtain reliable weight measurements of Icelandic horses by using an estimation method. Both the weight pursuant to weight tape and pursuant to weight formula showed no significant differences (P = 1.00 and P = 0.37, respectively) from the actual weight. The correlation between estimated and actual weights was r = 0.94 for weight tape and r = 0.93 for weight formula. However, the differences between the estimated and actual weights were smallest when estimated using an adjusted weight formula: weight (kg) = girth² × length (both in cm)/11,400. In conclusion, the body weight of Icelandic horses can be estimated from the measurements of body girth and length, and weight tape also seems to be a suitable method.  相似文献

The genome-wide recombination rate varies between individuals, but the mechanism controlling this variation in humans has remained elusive. A genome-wide search identified sequence variants in the 4p16.3 region correlated with recombination rate in both males and females. These variants are located in the RNF212 gene, a putative ortholog of the ZHP-3 gene that is essential for recombinations and chiasma formation in Caenorhabditis elegans. It is noteworthy that the haplotype formed by two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the highest recombination rate in males is associated with a low recombination rate in females. Consequently, if the frequency of the haplotype changes, the average recombination rate will increase for one sex and decrease for the other, but the sex-averaged recombination rate of the population can stay relatively constant.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of a P application (0 vs. 50 mg P kg-1) on yield, nodulation, and N2 fixation by three cowpea cultivars (Soronko, Amantin, and IT81D-1137) using the 15N isotope-dilution method. When P was not applied the inoculated cowpea genotypes showed significant differences (Soronko>Amantin> IT81D-1137) in N accumulation, in contrast to the uninoculated cowpea cultivars, which accumulated similar amounts of N. The differences in shoot N in inoculated plants were thus caused by differences in N2 fixation. The average values of N fixed (for both P levels) were 74% in Soronko, 59% in Amantin, and 42% in IT81D-1137, corresponding to 80, 51, and 24 mg N plant-1, respectively. Inoculation increased the total shoot-N accumulation in cv. Soronko by 270% without P and by 204% with P, cv. Amantin by 152 and 104%, and cv. IT81D-1137 by 74 and 58%, respectively. With P, the % N derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) was 42% for IT81D-1137, 62% for Amantin, and 76% for Soronko. The high value for Soronko indicates that in a soil of medium fertility, certain cowpea cultivars are capable of satisfying their total N requirement through N2 fixation. The P effect on N2 fixation was mainly in the total amount of N fixed rather than on the percentage derived from the atmosphere.  相似文献

Summary Variation in nodulation and N2 fixation by the Gliricidia sepium/Rhizobium spp. symbiosis was studied in two greenhouse experiments. The first included 25 provenances of G. sepium inoculated with a mixture of three strains of Rhizobium spp. N2 fixation was measured using the 15N isotope dilution method 12 weeks after planting. On average, G. sepium derived 45% of its total N from atmospheric N2. Significant differences in fixation were observed between provenances. The percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 ranged from 26 to 68% (equivalent to 18–62 mg N plant-1) and was correlated with total N in the plant (r=0.70; P=0.05). The second experiment included six strains of Rhizobium spp. and two methods of inoculation and the plants were harvested 14,35 and 53 weeks after planting. In the first harvest significant differences were found between the number of nodules and the percentage and amount of N2 fixed. There was also a significant correlation between the number of nodules and the amount of N2 fixed (r=0.92; P=0.05). In the final harvest no correlation was observed, although there were significant differences between the number of nodules and the percentage of N derived from the atmosphere. The amount of N2 fixed increased with time (from an average of 27% at the first harvest to 58% at the final harvest) and was influenced by the Rhizobium spp. strain and the method of inoculation. It ranged from 36% for Rhizobium sp. strain SP 14 to 71% for Rhizobium SP 44 at the last harvest. Values for the percentage of atmosphere derived N2 obtained by soil inoculation were slightly higher than those obtained by seed inoculation.  相似文献

This article points out the kinds of problems agriculture is facing, outlines and structures agricultural quality components and defined aims for them, discusses the shortcomings of organic farming, proposes some important research areas and presents an outlook. The quality components are a type of checklist of those factors that we should be aware of concerning protection of the environment, production of healthy food and the practice of good ethics. These components can be integrated into the general aims of sustainable agriculture. Many European and other countries focus on organic farming as a solution, but this approach is dangerous because it does not necessarily lead to a better environment or better food products. Concerning future agricultural research, the following issues are highly important: precision agriculture, low leaching cropping systems, management of soil biological processes and maximum recirculation. Finally, the article discusses some issues of future agriculture such as intensity, nutrient imbalances caused by regional farm specialisation, and the development of an agricultural quality assessment system.  相似文献
