Counts of invertebrates by sweep-netting and beating the stratum of rain forest vegetation between 6 in (15 cm) and 6 ft (1·8 m) have been made during rainy season conditions in N. Brasil and on Barro Colorado Island, Panama Canal, the latter from measured volumes of habitat. This work has been repeated on BCI during the dry season. The average population densities of total catches were 0·97 m3 for rainy season and 1·09 m3 for dry season. Species diversity was very high, therefore numbers per species extremely low. It is suggested that such low population density brings hazards of local extinction, and that the maintenance of such a system depends on the existence of extensive habitat from which recolonisation can occur. If this is so, reserves in rain forest will have to be very large, to ensure long-term survival of many of the invertebrate species.  相似文献

Soil CO2 emission (FCO2) in agricultural areas results from the interaction of different factors such as climate and soil conditions. Our objective was to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of FCO2, temperature (Tsoil), moisture (Msoil) and air-filled pore space (AFPS), as well as their interactions, during the sugarcane field reform. The study was conducted on a 90 × 90 m sampling grid with 100 points at 10 m spacings. Ten assessments of FCO2, Tsoil and Msoil were carried out at each point over a 28-day period. The greatest mean values of FCO2 (0.74 g m−2 hr−1) and Msoil (31.7%) were obtained on Julian day 276, 2013, being associated with precipitation events at the study site. Also, the smallest values of AFPS (19.17%) and Tsoil (20.90°C) were observed on the same day. The spatial variability of FCO2, Tsoil, Msoil and AFPS was best described by an adjusted spherical model, although an exponential model better fitted some results. The spatial pattern of all soil attributes showed little temporal persistency, indicating a high complexity for FCO2 during precipitation. Correlation maps assisted in identifying regions where Msoil and AFPS better controlled the emission process and where Tsoil was important. A major challenge for world agriculture is to increase the efficiency of conventional soil management practices. We highlight the importance of the spatial pattern of soil properties that directly influence the CO2 emission dynamics. Future mitigation actions should involve less intense tillage and ensure homogeneous applications of soil inputs, thereby reducing production costs and the contribution of these activities to CO2 emissions during the sugarcane field reform.  相似文献

In the horse, conventional inactivated or subunit vaccines against equine influenza virus (EIV) induce a short-lived antibody-based immunity to infection. Alternative strategies of vaccination have been subsequently developed to mimic the long-term protection induced by natural infection with the virus. One of these approaches is the use of immune-stimulating complex (ISCOM)-based vaccines. ISCOM vaccines induce a strong antibody response and protection against influenza in horses, humans, and a mouse model. Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) has been demonstrated in humans and mice after ISCOM vaccination, but rarely investigated in the horse. The aim of this study was to evaluate EIV-specific immune responses after intra-muscular vaccination with an ISCOM-EIV vaccine (EQUIP F) containing both equine influenza H7N7 (A/eq/Newmarket/77) and H3N8 (A/eq/Borl?nge/91 and A/eq/Kentucky/98) strains. The antibody response was measured by single radial haemolysis (SRH) assay using different H3N8 EIV strains. Stimulation of type-1 immunity was evaluated with a recently developed method that measures EIV-specific IFNgamma synthesis by peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). The protective efficacy of this ISCOM-based vaccine against challenge infection with a recent equine influenza (H3N8; A/eq/South Africa/4/03) strain was also evaluated. Vaccinated ponies developed elevated levels of EIV-specific SRH antibody and increased percentage of EIV-specific IFNgamma(+) PBL, whereas these responses were only detected after challenge infection in unvaccinated control ponies. Vaccinates showed minimal signs of disease and did not shed virus when challenged shortly after the second immunisation. In conclusion, evidence of type-1 immunity induced by an ISCOM-based vaccine is described for the first time in horses.  相似文献

Sperm quality tests on fish are classically used for evaluating cryopreservation procedures, and they are also promising to assess aquatic toxicity and biomarkers of xenobiotic effects on reproduction. Osmotic shock from the storage medium is one of the main factors affecting sperm quality during evaluation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different osmolalities (240–460 mOsm/kg) for at least 4 days on the sperm quality parameters of the viviparous fish Jenynsia multidentata. The level of significance was (P < 0.05). The plasma osmolality of J. multidentata is 326 ± 3.9 mOsm/kg. The motility of fresh semen was higher in osmolalities of 280 and 300 mOsm/kg but did not differ between osmolalities from 240 to 320 mOsm/kg. Above 380 mOsm/kg, the motility observed was 0 %. Over the time period studied motility increased with increasing osmolality, and the most constant and long-lasting rates were between 300 and 320 mOsm/kg. On the 4th day of evaluation, higher membrane integrity rates were observed between 280 and 360 mOsm/kg, higher mitochondrial membrane potential was observed between 300 and 460 mOsm/kg, and higher DNA integrity rates were observed between 260 and 380 mOsm/kg. Moreover, osmolalities ≥460 and ≤240 resulted in the lowest motility and DNA integrity levels. Over 4 days, the plasma membrane integrity was significantly lower at ≤260 and ≥400 mOsm/kg, and the mitochondrial membrane potential was significantly lower only in osmolalities ≤240 mOsm/kg. Therefore, we conclude that for sperm quality preservation in J. multidentata, an osmolality of 300–320 mOsm/kg of the most suitable diluent is necessary. Furthermore, we conclude that the storage of sperm in a hyposmotic (<260 mOsm/kg) or hyperosmotic (>400 mOsm/kg) solution affects not only motility but also other sperm quality parameters.  相似文献

Despite the availability of vaccines, equine influenza virus (EIV) continues to pose a threat to the racing industry. The virus spreads rapidly in unprotected populations and large scale outbreaks, such as those in South Africa in 2003 and Australia in 2007, can cost billions of pounds. Like other influenza viruses, EIV undergoes antigenic variation, enabling it to evade antibodies generated against previous infection or vaccination. The UK has an active surveillance programme to monitor antigenic drift and participates in an international collaboration with other countries in Europe, Japan and the USA to select suitable vaccine strains. Selection is primarily based upon characterisation of the viral haemagglutinin (HA), the surface protein that induces a protective antibody response; this protein is an important component of commercial vaccines. In recent years vaccine technology has improved and diagnostic methods have become increasingly sensitive, both play a crucial part in facilitating the international movement of horses. Mathematical modelling techniques have been applied to study the risk factors involved in outbreaks and provide valuable information about the impact of vaccination. Other factors, such as pathogenicity, are poorly understood for EIV yet may play an important role in the spread of a particular virus. They may also affect the ability of the virus to cross the species barrier, as seen with the transfer to dogs in the USA. Severity of infection is likely to be influenced by more than one gene, but differences in the NS1 protein are believed to influence the cytokine response in the horse and have been manipulated to produce potential vaccine strains.  相似文献
