The Borana rangelands are important areas of cattle production in Ethiopia. However, these rangelands are threatened by the increasing changes in the natural vegetation from grass and forbs dominated into unpalatable bushy woody vegetation resulting in the loss of some of the highly desirable grass species. This study was conducted to assess the impacts of bush encroachment on the biodiversity, structure and cover of the native vegetation in bush encroached and non-encroached sites. Vegetation data were collected from both sites by laying quadrate plots along transects using a systematic sampling method. According to the results, higher number of species was recorded in the non-encroached sites than that in the encroached sites. The diversity indices for the non-encroached and the encroached sites were 3.16 and 2.67, respectively. The abundance and cover analysis indicated that there was high density and cover of herbaceous species in the non-encroached site. There was a significantly higher density of woody species cover in the encroached site. Generally, the bush encroachment in the Borana rangelands has hampered the diversity of the native vegetation, particularly the grasses and forbs and reduced the ground cover, exposing large parts of the rangelands for soil erosion and other degradation process.  相似文献

The tree annual ring is defined and geometrically described by two new physical quantities designated as golden ring cube (GRC) and golden ring volume (GRV). The quantities were used to derive a two-level system dynamical coarse-graining framework for annual rings by applying non-equilibrium equality of free energy differences of dynamical repetitive transitions from earlywood to latewood and vice versa. The scaling properties of growth rings interaction parameter β, GRC and GRV were then numerically quantified and tested for Douglas-fir and white spruce. Although parameter β was different for Douglas-fir and white spruce, its invariant property was tested and found to be the same for both species. The parameter β was thereafter used to derive a novel heterogeneity test criterion that was described and tested. β is an important parameter that provides integrated information for the dependence of the GRV and GRC on species, growth factors, and environmental interaction signals.  相似文献

In order to assess and identify the determinants of sheep price and price variation across time, a time series data were collected from four selected markets in North Shewa, Northeastern Ethiopia on weekly market day basis for a period of 2 years. Data on animal characteristics and purpose of buying were collected on a weekly basis from randomly selected 15–25 animals, and a total of 7,976 transactions were recorded. A general linear model technique was used to identify factors influencing sheep price, and the results showed that sheep price (liveweight sheep price per kilogram taken as a dependent variable) is affected by animal characteristics such as weight, sex, age, condition, season, and color. Most of the markets’ purpose for which the animal was purchased did not affect significantly the price per kilogram. This may be due to the similarity of the markets in terms of buyer’s purpose. The results suggest that there will be benefit from coordinated fattening, breeding, and marketing programs to take the highest advantage from the preferred animals’ characteristics and selected festival markets. Finally, the study recommends for a coordinated action to enhance the benefit generated for all participant actors in the sheep value chain through raising sheep productivity, improving the capacity of sheep producers and agribusiness entrepreneurs to access and use latest knowledge and technologies; and strengthening linkages among actors in the sheep value chain.  相似文献

This study was initiated to isolate, characterize and select symbiotically effective rhizobia nodulating lentil (Lens culinaris medic) and to enumerate indigenous rhizobia nodulating lentil in some Ethiopian soils. More than 84 nodule and soil samples were collected. In sand culture, only 62 isolates were authenticated as rhizobia nodulating lentil. Analyses of variance indicated that most of the parameters measured were significantly (p < 0.05) improved by inoculation, with the exception of root length. Inoculation increased shoot length, shoot dry weight and plant total nitrogen by 82.3, 196 and 452%, respectively, over negative control (without inoculation and N fertilization). The tested isolates were found to be very effective (20.9%) and effective (77.4%), with only one ineffective isolate. Indigenous rhizobia in the investigated soils ranged from 30 to 5.8 × 103 cell g?1 dry soil. A pot experiment with selected rhizobia and nitrogen fertilizer on Chefedonsa and Debrezeit soils did not show any significant difference in shoot dry weight at p < 0.05. From the study, it was observed that most Ethiopian soils were inhabited by a moderate to high number of indigenous rhizobia and rhizobia inoculation did not improve lentil productivity in the investigated soils.  相似文献

Though mineral N application impaired nodulation initiation and function, it improves the productivity of common bean. The effect of inorganic application on common bean productivity, however, is dependent on the availability of plant nutrients including nitrogen (N) in the soils. Therefore, multilocation field experiments were conducted at Babillae, Fedis, Haramaya, and Hirna to evaluate the effect of inherent soil fertility status on responsiveness of common bean to different rates of N fertilizer application and its effect on nodulation, yield, and yield components of common bean. The treatments were six levels of N fertilizer (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 kg N ha?1) laid out in randomized completed block design with three replications. The result revealed that 20 kg N ha?1 application significantly improved the nodule number (NN) and nodule dry weight (NDW) except Hirna site, in which reduction of NN and NDW was observed. Although the remaining investigated yield and yield components were significantly improved due to N fertilizer in all study sites, 40 kg N ha?1 application resulted in significantly increased GY of common bean at Fedis, Haramaya, and Hirna site, while 60 kg N ha?1 at Babillae site. The highest total biomass yield (7011.6 kg ha?1) and GY (2475.28 kg ha?1) of common bean were recorded at Hirna and Haramaya sites, respectively, indicating the importance of better fertile soil for good common bean production. Hence, it can be concluded that the effect of inorganic N on common bean was irrespective of soil fertility rather the total amount of N in soil would affect the need of different rate of inorganic N.  相似文献

This study was initiated to evaluate the effect of locally isolated Rhizobium on nodulation and yield of faba bean at Haramaya, Ethiopia for three consecutive years. Ten treatments comprising of eight effective isolates of rhizobia, uninoculated, and N-fertilized (20 kg N ha?1) were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The result of the experiment indicated that all inoculation treatments increased nodule number and dry weight over the control check in all cropping seasons. The result, however, showed the non-significant effect of Rhizobium inoculation on shoot length, number of tiller per plant and 100 seed weight in all cropping season. Inoculating Haramaya University Faba Bean Rhizobium (HUFBR)-15 in 2011 and National Soil Faba Bean Rhizobium (NSFBR)-30 in 2012 and 2013 gave the highest grain yields (4330, 5267 and 4608 kg ha?1), respectively. These records were 75%, 48%, and 5% over the uninoculated treatment of respective years. Over the season, NSCBR-30 inoculation resulted in the highest nodulation and grain yield production as compared to the other treatments. In general, isolates from central Ethiopia were better than those isolated from eastern Ethiopia and Tropical Agricultural Legume (TAL)-1035 in enhancing faba bean production at Haramaya site. Therefore, NSFBR-30 is recommended as a candidate isolate for faba bean biofertilizer production in eastern Ethiopia soils.  相似文献

Many studies show that semi-arid rangelands throughout the world have been rapidly converted from a grassland state to a bush encroachment state during the past 50 years. Bush encroachment includes the spread of local woody species and/or incursion of woody species introduced from other ecosystems into semi-arid savannas and grassland ecosystems. Rangeland degradation due to bush encroachment causes several challenges, affecting the production of livestock and pastoral people livelihoods in most parts of Africa. Scientists have long been attempting to develop schematic and mathematical theories to explain the observed phenomenon of bush encroachment, and several theories were proposed and developed. The well-regarded theories include:(1) Walter's two-layer model,(2) Moir's one-layer model,(3) state-and-transition theory,(4) equilibrium theory,(5) disequilibrium theory, and(6) non-equilibrium theory. Within those theories, the most frequently-indicated driving factors that explain bush encroachment include over-grazing, availability of soil nutrient and moisture, elevated CO2 levels, frequency and intensity of fire, spread of seeds of woody species by livestock and wild animals. It should be stressed that couplings and interactions among diverse driving factors are more often at work in determining the condition of bush encroachment. To summarize, the effort in managing semi-arid ecosystems needs critical knowledge to understand the cause-effect relationships of underlying factors through integrated approach. Therefore, future research on encroachment of woody plants should be multi-discipline oriented and multi-partnership involved.  相似文献

A field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the requirement of Fe nutrient supplied through foliar and soil application in soybean inoculated with different selected isolates of exotic and native Bradyrhizobium spp. in saline soils. Six soybean genotypes and three Bradyrhizobium spp. were used for the greenhouse experiments, whereas only two soybean genotypes, namely TGx-1336424 and GIZA, were selected for further study under field conditions. Two levels of FeSO4 (0 and 4 mg Fe kg?1 soil) directly supplied to the soil and three levels of Fe-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (0–2% of Fe) through foliar application were used for greenhouse and field experiments, respectively. The results of the greenhouse experiment indicated a non-significant effect of Fe application on nodulation and shoot biomass in soybean. Fe application did not improve the grain yield and total biomass yield in soybean inoculated with UK isolate and local isolate but showed remarkable improvement with TAL-379. High soil native N might be the cause for insignificant effect of Fe applied at 2% in highly effective inoculated plants. Therefore, it can be concluded that the symbiotic effectiveness of Bradyrhizobium sp. and the native soil N would affect the soybean Fe requirement supplied through foliar application.  相似文献
