The development of cracks and changes in appearance have been investigated on radial and tangential sections of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies Karst.) after exposure outdoors for 61 months. The degradation of the sections has also been studied at the micro-level. The annual ring orientation was the most important factor affecting crack development on weathering. After 61 months of outdoor exposure, the tangential sections of spruce had 1.7-2.2 times greater mean total crack length per area unit than the corresponding radial sections. In pine, the total crack length per area unit on the tangential sections was 2.2-2.6 times greater than that on the radial sections. Tangential and radial sections show the same colour change as a result of weathering. Tangential sections have more and deeper cracks than radial surfaces. The cracks on the tangential sections occur frequently in both earlywood and latewood. On radial sections, cracks occur primarily at the annual ring borders, but to a certain extent also in the earlywood. Decomposition of the cell wall takes place in both radial and tangential cell walls, and cracks tend to follow the fibril orientation in the S2-layer of the cell wall. Seasonal changes in the concentration of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in the leading shoot and in the live tissue external to the xylem (living bark) of 2-3 m tall Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees were observed over a period of three years. Both the leading shoot and the living bark showed a consistent pattern of seasonal variation in IAA content, with maxima of about 150 and 350 ng g(-1) (fresh weight), respectively. The IAA concentration in both tissues increased in late June at the time of shoot growth termination, decreased from late August, and by October reached a low value, which was maintained throughout the winter. Excision of current year shoots on the upper branches decreased the annual stem diameter increment without affecting the concentration of IAA in the living bark. However, excising the leading shoot, or girdling the mainstem beneath the leading shoot, caused a substantial reduction in the IAA content of the living stem bark. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that organic acids have an impact on both Fe(II) and Fe(III) uptake in Caco-2 cell. However, to what extent this effect is correlated with the anion of organic acids per se, or with the resulting decrease in pH, has not yet been clarified. Therefore, we studied the effect of five organic acids (tartaric, succinic, citric, oxalic, and propionic acid) on the absorption of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in Caco-2 cells and compared this with sample solutions without organic acids but set to equivalent pH by HCl. The results showed that the mechanisms behind the enhancing effect of organic acids differed for the two forms of iron. For ferric iron the organic acids promoted uptake both by chelation and by lowering the pH, whereas for ferrous iron the promoting effect was caused only by the lowered pH. 相似文献

It has previously been suggested that organic acids enhance iron absorption. We have studied the effect of nine organic acids on the absorption of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the human epithelial cell line Caco-2. The effect obtained was dose-dependent, and the greatest increase (43-fold) was observed for tartaric acid (4 mmol/L) on Fe(III) (10 micromol/L). Tartaric, malic, succinic, and fumaric acids enhanced Fe(II) and Fe(III) uptake. Citric and oxalic acid, on the other hand, inhibited Fe(II) uptake but enhanced Fe(III) uptake. Propionic and acetic acid increased the Fe(II) uptake, but had no effect on Fe(III) uptake. Our results show a correlation between absorption pattern and chemical structure; e.g. hydroxyl groups, in addition to carboxyls, were connected with a positive influence. The results may be important for elucidating factors affecting iron bioavailability in the small intestine and for the development of foods with improved iron bioavailability. 相似文献

A sensitive and simple method for the simultaneous determination of nutritionally important minerals in food samples is in great demand. Ion chromatography coupled with UV-vis detection is shown to be an appropriate technique for this objective. The method is based on the formation of mineral complexes by pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid in the mobile phase. The complexes are then postcolumn derivatized with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR), resulting in mineral-PAR complexes that are detected by UV-vis absorption at 500 nm. This facilitates the simultaneous separation and quantification of minerals in one chromatographic run. Within 16 min, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, Mn, and Fe are analyzed. When a 50 microL injection volume is used, the average detection limit is 5 ppb in the injection liquid. The detection limit makes it a superior alternative to AAS and, in several applications, also an alternative to ICP-MS techniques. Different sample treatments were evaluated. The concentration of acid in the treated sample varied with the sample treatment, which may cause a limitation for the injection volume. The sawmill industry is a very important link in the Mozambique forest products value chain, but the industry is characterized by undeveloped processing technology and high-volume export of almost unrefined logs. The low volume yield of sawn timber has been identified as a critical gap in the technological development of the industry. To improve the profitability of the industry, there is thus a need to develop methods and techniques that improve the yield. In this paper, different positioning of logs prior to sawing and the possibility of increasing the volume yield of crooked logs by bucking the logs before sawing have been studied. A computer simulation was used to study the cant-sawing and through-and-through sawing of the logs to determine the volume yield of sawn timber from the jambirre (Millettia stuhlmannii Taub.) and umbila (Pterocarpus angolensis DC.) species. The optimal position, i.e. the position of the log before sawing that gives the highest volume yield of sawn timber for a given sawing pattern when the positioning parameters, offset, skew and rotation, are considered gave a considerable higher volume yield than the horns-down position. By bucking very crooked logs and using the horns-down positioning before sawing, the volume yield can be of the same magnitude as that obtained by optimal positioning on full-length (un-bucked) logs. The bucking reduces the crook of the logs and hence increases the volume yield of sawn timber. 相似文献
