The herds of 95 families were monitored for 1 year in eight villages in the cotton-growing region of southern Mali. In 2006–2007, reproduction performances were average, with 0.54 calvings/year per cow, and mortality was low. Herd numerical productivity is not very high, less than 0.13/year, because of the high proportion of males kept for animal draught. Depending on the herd size, the behaviour of the families differs, in terms of off-take and in-take of animals. Families that only have one or two draught animals seek to increase their animal draught capacity, with a negative net off-take (−0.13/year). Families with two to three cows have a very low net off-take (0.02/year), with culling of adult animals compensated by purchase. They therefore capitalised this year, with an annual herd growth of 8%. Families with a very large herd (20 to 50 cows) take off more of their stock, with a net off-take of 0.08/year (very few animal purchases) and make a stock growth of 5%. And finally, families with an average-sized herd (6 to 19 cows) take off the whole of the year’s production, with a net off-take of 0.11/year and a nil stock growth rate. The use of a demographic model made it possible to measure the sensitivity of the productivity rate to the different demographic parameters.  相似文献

Plants are used in different ways in Mali, among those as medicine and as food. The monitoring of metals in the plants is of great importance for protecting the public from the hazards of possible toxic effects and also for informing the population about the nutritional value of the plants. The concentrations of some toxic and essential metal ions were surveyed in seven medicinal and edible plants from Mali. Dry ashing of the plant material and subsequent use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry were the analytical methodologies used. Iron, manganese, and zinc were found in high concentrations in some of the plants, i.e., 1.4 and 1.5 mg/g iron in Cuminum cyminum and Bombax costatum, respectively, 243 microg/g manganese in Hibiscus sabdariffa, and 62.8 and 67.1 microg/g zinc in Spilanthes oleracaea and B. costatum, respectively, whereas cobalt and cadmium were not detected in any of the plant material studied. The other ions detected, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cu, were present in minor amounts, in the ranges of 2.2-17.2 microg/g for Cr, 1.6-8.1 microg/g for Ni, 0.7-5.2 microg/g for Pb, and 2.4-17.1 microg/g for Cu. From a toxicological point of view, none of these plants would be harmful for the user by taking in the plant material in the traditional manner, which is preparing an infusion of the plant using amounts not adding up to those necessary to reach a harmful level of the metal ions detected. The plants B. costatum and C. cyminum could be of interest as sources for iron for humans in the case of too low of a level of hemoglobin.  相似文献

More information on the response of newly developed or introduced grain sorghum cultivare to split‐applied nitrogen (N) in semi‐arid rainfed agriculture is needed. Therefore, the influence of four split‐applied N schedules (100/0, 66/34, 50/50, and 34/66) on six American (SC 283, SC 274, SC 669, B 66181, SC 33, and RTam 428), and four West African (CSm 63, 1S 6704c, 1S 7173c, and 1S 7419c) grain sorghum cultivars was evaluated. The split‐applied N significantly increased grain yield and percent protein in grain sorghum over a one‐time application of N. The increase in yield and protein content varied among varieties and schedules of N application. Varieties SC 574, RTam 428, and Csm 63 at split‐applied schedules of 66/34, 50/50, and 34/66, respectively, gave the highest yield over one‐time application of N. Similar differences in percent protein in grain among cultivars due to split‐applied N were observed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a green and species-specific insect pest control technique that suppresses target populations by releasing factory-reared, radiosterilized males into the wild. Once released, it is important to be able to distinguish the released males from the wild males for monitoring purposes. Several methods to mark the sterile males exist. However, most have limitations due to monetary, process efficiency, or insect quality. Aedes albopictus is naturally infected with Wolbachia at a high prevalence, therefore the elimination of Wolbachia can serve as a biomarker to distinguish factory-reared male mosquitoes from wild conspecifics.

RESULTS

In this study, a Wolbachia-free Ae. albopictus GT strain was developed and its fitness evaluated, which was found to be comparable to the wild GUA strain. In addition, GT male mosquitoes were irradiated at the adult stage and a dose of 20 Gy or more induced over 99% sterility. Moreover, a dose of 30 Gy (almost completely sterilizing male and female mosquitoes) had limited effects on the mating competitiveness of GT males and the vector competence of GT females, respectively. However, radiation reduced mosquito longevity, regardless of sex.

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that the Ae. albopictus GT strain can be distinguished from wild mosquitoes based on Wolbachia status and shows similar fitness, radio-sensitivity and arbovirus susceptibility to the GUA strain, indicating that it is feasible to use the GT strain to suppress Ae. albopictus populations for SIT programmes. © 2023 The Authors. Organic carbon (OC) is generally low in Alabama (U.S.A.) soils and varies considerably with cropping systems. Information on decomposition rates of the added C is a prerequisite to designing strategies that improve C sequestration in farming systems. Different models including exponential models have been used to describe OC mineralization in soils as well as to describe its potential as CO2 to be released into the environment. We investigated the decomposition of broiler litter added to ten non-calcareous soils (Appling, Troup, Cecil, Decatur, Sucarnoochee, Linker, Hartsells, Dothan, Maytag, and Colbert soils). A non-linear regression approach for N mineralization was used to estimate the potentially mineralizable OC pools (Co) and the first-order rate constant (k) in the soil samples. Results showed that the non-amended soils have distinct differences in their ability to release their native OC as CO2 and can be divided into four groups depending on their potentially mineralizable C (Co) and their ability to protect stable organic matter. Sucarnoochee soil represents the first group and contains a moderate amount of OC (11.4 g C kg−1) but had the highest Co (7.30 g C kg−1 soil). The second distinct group of soils has Co varying between 5.50 and 5.00 g C kg−1 soil (Decatur, Hartsells, Dothan, and Maytag). The third group has Co between 5.00 and 4.00 (Appling, Cecil, and Linker). The fourth group has Co less than 4.00 g C kg−1 soil (Troup and Colbert). Half-life of C remaining in non-amended soils varied from 26 days in Maytag soil to 139 days in Cecil soil. The OC in these non-amended soils represents a very stable form of organic C and thus, not easily decomposed by soil microorganisms. In the broiler litter-amended soils, the Co varied from 3.82 g C kg−1 in Appling soil amended with broiler litter 1-7.04 g C kg−1 soil in Maytag amended with broiler litter 2. Decomposition of the added OC proceeded in two phases with less than 31% decomposed in 43 days. Oedaleus senegalensis is a serious pest of millet in the Sahel, but the correlation to crop loss remains largely unknown. Therefore, the correlation between densities of O. senegalensis, defoliation level and millet yields was investigated in Niger in 2008, and a simple model to foresee the yield based on these parameters was developed. The yield was significantly correlated to both the density of O. senegalensis and the defoliation level on 17 September. The best model to foresee millet yield involved grasshopper density and cumulated rainfall and may be regarded a tentative method in O. senegalensis control.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of preoperative meloxicam administration on postoperative stress and pain induced by surgical castration in piglets.Study designProspective, blinded, randomized clinical trial.AnimalsOne hundred and eighty male piglets of <1 week of age.MethodsCastration was performed on 150 piglets which had received either an intramuscular injection of 0.4 mg kg?1 meloxicam or a placebo 10–30 minutes before the procedure. Blood cortisol and ACTH concentrations were determined at 30 minutes post–castration and haptoglobin was measured at 24 hours post–castration. Presence or absence of foreleg movements, hind leg movements, urine or faeces emission, tremors or other body movements were recorded during the castration procedure. Scores for presence or absence of prostration, tremors, tail movements and isolation were recorded at 30 minutes, and at 1, 2, 4 and 24 hours post–castration and combined in a global behaviour score (GBS). Blood samples were taken from a further 30 piglets which did not undergo castration.ResultsMean blood cortisol and ACTH concentrations at 30 minutes post–castration were both significantly lower in the meloxicam group than in the placebo group (p ≤ 0.01). The mean haptoglobin concentration at 24 hours was not significantly reduced (p = 0.178). The distribution of the GBS during castration was similar in both groups. There were significant differences in the GBS after castration at both 2 and 4 hours post–castration with a greater proportion of piglets in the meloxicam group showing no behavioural alterations (82.7%versus 68.0% at both time points). The score distribution was similar in both groups at 30 minutes, 1 and 24 hours after castration.Conclusion and clinical relevanceThis study suggests that pre–emptive administration of meloxicam is able to produce some postoperative analgesia after surgical castration of young piglets.  相似文献

Sorghum is a good candidate crop for breeding to increase provitamin A, i.e., biofortification. Yellow endosperm sorghums contain carotenoids, including precursors of vitamin A, and sorghum is a major staple crop in areas of Asia and Africa where vitamin A deficiency is prevalent. Our objective was to collect and characterize yellow endosperm sorghums as a potential new source of genetic diversity to increase provitamin A content. A set of 164 landraces were collected from southern Niger and northern Nigeria. The most important use of these cultivars was as food. The endosperm exhibited a significant variation in yellow intensity. Lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene were the most abundant carotenoids in the ten landraces with the most intense yellow color. Cluster analysis, principal coordinate analysis and population differentiation test revealed that this set of 164 landraces represent a new genetic pool that might increase the genetic diversity of yellow endosperm sorghums in applied breeding programs.  相似文献
