Crystalluria results from oversaturation of urine with crystallogenic substance. However, oversaturation may occur as a result of in vitro as well as in vivo events. The microscopic appearance of crystals only represents a tentative identification of their composition because variable conditions associated with their formation, growth, and dissolution may alter their appearance. Faecal samples from 434 calves under 1 year of age (307 diarrhoeal and 127 normal) were collected from three dairy farms and one village in selected areas of Bangladesh. The samples were tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the presence of rotavirus antigen. Of 402 dairy calves tested, 28 (7.0%) were positive, of which 21 (7.2%) were from diarrhoeic calves and 7 (6.3%) from non-diarrhoeic calves. Rotavirus infection varied from farm to farm (2.7–9.2%) and there was no positive response from any of the 32 village calves. Rotavirus was most commonly found in calves of 1 week of age or less (up to 22.2% in one group) but was not found in any calves later than 6 months of age. More than 80% of rotavirus-positive samples from diarrhoeic calves exhibited a titre of 128 or more (geometric mean 345±4.5), whereas non-diarrhoeal calves had titres less than or equal to 128 (geometric mean=29±1.9), suggesting that rotavirus infection in calves in Bangladesh was mostly associated with diarrhoea. 相似文献

A study of the water balances of The Fayoum irrigated lands and Lake Qarun was made to investigate the management of the irrigation
system and the efficiency of irrigation water use. The two water balances are strongly interrelated. The drainage flow to
Lake Qarun and the water level of the Lake are in delicate balance. A rise in Lake level causes the inundation of adjacent
land. Management of The Fayoum water balance assumes control over irrigation water flows, but this control has technical and
organizational limitations.
Also discussed is the influence of irrigation practices in The Fayoum on the water balance (e.g., the autumn flushing of fields
and farmers' preference for not irrigating at night in winter).
Notwithstanding a high overall efficiency, irrigation efficiency during the winter is low. The reasons for this are given,
together with the constraints against improving system management.
Improved uniformity of the division and application of irrigation water will enable a better technical control of flows and
will result in better water management in The Fayoum.

The division of irrigation water in The Fayoum, Egypt, has been measured. Factors influencing this division are discussed: the hydraulic conditions at structures and canals, the operation regime of gates, lack of reliable gauge data for system operation, shortage of labour, and the water level in Lake Qarun. A deviation from uniform supply has been found for the entire Fayoum, but also along a lateral and sub-lateral. The reasons for this are discussed and suggestions for possible technical improvements of The Fayoum system are given.Abbreviations FWSBM

Salinity reduces plant biomass and may lead to death when severe. To cope with the negative effects of this stress, plant species present specific physiological or biochemical responses. In this work, we hypothesized that spraying salt-stressed thyme leaves with K+ and Ca2+ could mitigate the negative effects of salinity on plant growth and metabolism. To test this hypothesis, we grew thyme plants under salinity stress for two and four weeks before applying foliar sprays. Also, to test the effect of stress relief, treated plants were allowed two weeks of recovery after four weeks of salt stress. In general, after two and four weeks of salinity stress, the leaf fresh weight of thyme plants was reduced by 31 and 43%, respectively. Salinity also decreased the relative water content, water, and osmotic potentials and led to ion imbalances and nutrient deficiencies. Salinity altered concentration of some essential oils, but leaf antioxidant contents remained fairly stable, except for a significant increase for plants under NaCl?+?KCl two weeks after treatment. Our results indicated that stressed plants accumulated significantly more soluble sugars and amino acids in comparison with the control. Foliar sprays with KCl and CaCl2 reversed the negative effects of salinity on plant biomass and induced the accumulations of compatible solutes. Moreover, concentrations of some essential oils and gallic acid increased in sprayed plants, but these effects were dependent on the type and duration of the treatment. Overall, spraying leaves with K+ and Ca2+ was able to mitigate salinity stress in Thymus vulgaris even during the recovery period. 相似文献

The ultrastructure of feline mammary hypertrophy was studied in a five-month-old female which had aborted recently, a ten-year-old female which was one month postestrus, and a four-year-old progestin-treated neutered male. Morphologic comparisons were made to normal mammary tissue from a one-year-old female cat. Hypertrophied mammary tissue had the same cell types and spatial relationships as did the normal gland. Major differences included a more highly developed duct system composed of metabolically active cells which often were arranged in multiple cell layers, and periductular stroma with increased fibroblasts and vascularization. Hypertrophied epithelial cells were characterized generally by smooth-contoured nuclear membranes, more evenly dispersed heterochromatin, prominent nucleoli, increased polyribosomes, and elongated mitochondria. Secretory activity was developed significantly only in the cat that had aborted recently. Modifications in myoepithelial cells included: more evenly dispersed nuclear heterochromatin, thicker bundles of cytoplasmic filaments, more straight plasma membranes along the basal lamina, and elongated hemidesmosomes. Multilayering of the basal lamina was accentuated. Stromal fibroblasts had nuclear heterochromatin distributed similarly to that of epithelial and myoepithelial cells, and increased rough endoplasmic reticulum. Myoepithelial cells did not contribute to the increased stromal cellularity.
