This study was aimed to develop captive breeding and nurture the young of stonesucker (Garra ceylonensis, Bleeker), a small threatened freshwater fish species endemic to Sri Lanka. Breeding of stonesucker was possible under indoor conditions without hormonal stimulation. They were single spawners having a fecundity of 562±176 eggs per fish (total length of 7.9±0.6 cm) with an egg size of 770–1877 μm. Duration of development stages were, egg to hatchling 36–48 h, hatchling to postlarva stage 3–4 days, postlarva to juvenile stage 5–64 days and adult stage in 300–365 days at 26–28°C. Juveniles exhibited bottom dwelling habit in 70–75 days. Postlarva fed with formulated feed exhibited the highest growth (P<0.05) compared with live diets, Artemia and microworm (Anguillula sp.). Although the juveniles revealed a significantly high growth performance (P<0.05) with swine liver diet up to day 45 compared with formulated feed and combination of detritus and plankton, formulated feed exhibited an increase in growth from day 50. Therefore, formulated feed could be used for rearing of postlarva and juvenile stages without any live feeds.  相似文献

Very few studies deal with the rare earth element (REE) content within paddy soil systems. This paper presents, for the first time, the distribution of REEs in paddy soils from three different regions in Sri Lanka. Seventy samples from the Kalutara and Kandy regions located in the Wet Zone and Anuradhapura region in the Dry Zone were selected for this study. ICP-MS measurements were performed on the soil samples to determine their respective REE concentrations. The sum content of all the REEs (REE) in these three regions were 182, 186 and 132 g/g, respectively. The mean concentrations for the 70 soil samples in µg/g were 35(La), 77 (Ce), 7.6 (Pr), 27.6 (Nd), 4.8 (Sm), 0.87 (Eu), 4.1 (Gd), 0.54 (Tb), 2.91 (Dy), 0.56 (Ho), 1.57 (Er), 0.21(Tm), 1.44 (Tb), and 0.23 (Lu). The chondrite-normalized REE patterns of the paddy soils from the three study areas were similar, which may be a reflection of comparable parent materials. Kalutara soils, which are richer in organic matter and kaolinite, showed a higher lighter REE content and lower heavy REE content with a more pronounced negative Eu anomaly with respect to the other regions. Whilst this may be a result of subtle differences in soil parent materials, it could also reflect secondary processes related to clay mineral and organic matter adsorption of REEs in paddy soils  相似文献

Abstract

Odour-mediated effects of leek Allium porum and chives Allium schoenoprasum (Alliaceae) on the host searching behaviour of the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Homoptera: Aphididae) were studied. In an olfactometer, odour of the host plant sweet pepper Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae) was significantly attractive, whereas odour of chives was significantly repellent. Combined odour of sweet pepper and chives was neither attractive nor repellent. When sweet pepper plants were exposed to volatiles from chives for five days, their odour subsequently became repellent to M. persicae. An extract of leek plants was significantly repellent to aphids in the olfactometer, as were sweet pepper plants sprayed with this extract. Because both leek and chives can disrupt host finding by the aphid, both plants have potential for intercropping with sweet pepper. If successful in the field, such a system could bring economic benefits for farmers in the wet zone of Sri Lanka and other parts of the world.  相似文献

The present study sought to elucidate whether Schistosoma japonicum eggs could survive a passage through dogs and chickens. Three dogs and three chickens were used for the experiment. The dogs were allowed to eat goat faeces containing 80 S. japonicum eggs per gram. The chickens were given 2 ml of water containing more than 100 S. japonicum eggs per ml. The hatchability of the eggs was 51.8% prior to administration. All faeces were collected for 3 days from the dogs and for 2 days from the chickens and egg excretion and hatchability were measured. The results showed that nearly 50% of the eggs administered to the dogs were recovered in the faeces during the first 2 days and during the first 25 h 39% of the recovered eggs were viable and able to hatch. In the chickens 9% of the administered eggs were recovered within 27 h and within the first 3.5 h after administration 19% of the recovered eggs were viable and able to hatch. The results suggest that both dogs and chickens may act as transport hosts for S. japonicum in endemic areas.  相似文献

Infection by Brucella abortus seems to be a major cause of abortions among cattle and buffaloes in Sri Lanka. The incidence of this disease is more prominent among the animals in the Dry zone of the country raised under extensive management systems. The present low incidence of this disease and the small size of the country may facilitate launching of an effective disease control scheme. The milk ring test (MRT) has proven to be usable in testing milk for the infection at farm level. An ELISA technique could be employed to test the seroprevalence of infection among MRT-positive animals. A program to purchase the diseased animals by the state for slaughter, and a countrywide vaccination program with B. abortus strain RB51 would enable the country’s livestock industry to eventually eradicate this disease.  相似文献

In agro-ecosystems, pollinators perform a variety of ecological services. The ecological role of pollinators and their ecosystem services are critical to the health of many ecosystems. Pollination by birds and bees are recognized as an important ecosystem function maintaining the dynamics of agro-ecosystems. As agriculture covers a significant portion of the globe, it necessitates the evaluation of their ecosystem services. There are overwhelming evidence that pollinators are experiencing tremendous population decline. Global agricultural encroachment, agriculture intensification, changes in cropped pasture, urban development and extensive use of pesticides are the major threats to farmland birds. Despite ecological importance and global awareness, farmland birds and bees are often considered as species of low conservation value. The worldwide use of neonicotinoid insecticides has raised concern over the decline of pollinators in the farmlands globally. Neonicotinoids are neurotoxins, applied to variety of agricultural crops to control sucking and biting pests and are readily incorporated into plant cells, inclusive of pollen and nectar. Among neonicotinoids, imidacloprid is found to have startling effects, disrupting several ecosystem services, inhibiting pollination and threatening global food security. The study focuses on imidacloprid and its wider risk to the environment with effects on non-target pollinators especially birds and bees. Some of the effects on bees include disrupting social behavior, foraging and altered navigation and in birds reduced reproduction and offspring immunity. Though the scientific community is intently examining the potential effects of imidacloprid on pollinators, the research warrants further investigations with field-realistic concentrations and at relevant exposure levels. This would facilitate the functioning of pollinators and promote sustainable agriculture by reducing the impact of neonicotinoids. This review summarizes the potential lethal and sublethal effects of neonicotinoid pesticide imidacloprid on pollinators and other invertebrate groups and also helps us to better understand the extent of their toxicity.  相似文献

During the current investigation, 51 bacterial isolates/mutants of Azotobacter chroococcum, Azospirillum spp. and Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus were tested for antifungal activity against three fungal pathogens, namely Rhizoctonia solani cotton, Rhizoctonia solani rice and Fusarium oxysporum tomato using a dual-culture technique under laboratory conditions. Ten isolates/mutants were found to be inhibitory against R. solani cotton, six against R. solani rice and twelve against F. oxysporum tomato. Nearly 50% of the isolates/mutants were siderophore positive. The antimicrobial substance was found to be extracellular and proteinaceous in nature, but in some strains it was found to be associated with other complex material also. Almost all the positive isolates/mutants showed production of antibiotic and antifungal compounds. On the basis of this study, in vitro results under laboratory conditions were reproduced in pot experiments in the greenhouse and chosen isolates/mutants of A. chroococcum were found to be effective biocontrol agents against R. solani cotton (disease index 16.7%) and R. solani rice (2.5%) in cotton crop, whereas in guar, the crop disease index was 2.5% against R. solani cotton, 13.3% against R. solani rice and 0% against F. oxysporum tomato in tomato crop compared with their respective checks.  相似文献

Triticale is being actively explored as a feedstock for bioethanol production in Western Canada. Triticale distillers grains, an important coproduct of the bioethanol industry, are used mainly as animal feed. This study aims to develop methods of protein extraction from triticale distillers wet grains and distillers dried grains with solubles. Osborne fractionation showed low protein extractability because excessive protein denaturation occurred during sample preparation. Five methods were used to extract proteins: pH shifting, 60% ethanol, alkaline‐ethanol solution, glacial acetic acid, and enzyme‐aided extraction. Extracts obtained with the alkaline‐ethanol and glacial acetic acid methods showed comparatively higher protein contents (≈61–65%) when compared with the other extraction methods (≈35–57%). Enzyme‐aided extraction with Protex 6L yielded 75–82% protein at a content of 43–57%, depending on the types of raw materials. Establishing methods of protein extraction from triticale distillers grains would facilitate further studies on new uses of triticale proteins.  相似文献

The penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are enzymes that regulate the assembly of the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall. The genome of Brucella melitensis strain 16M possesses seven pbp genes: three in pbp-1 family (designated as 1A, 1B, and 1C); one in pbp-2 family; and three in pbp-6 family (designated as 6A, 6B, and 6C). We investigated the importance of pbp-1 and pbp-2 genes to viability, cell morphology and infectivity of B. melitensis. A recombinant B. melitensis strain (designated 16MDeltapbp1C) was generated by disrupting the pbp-1C of strain 16M by allelic exchange. This strain produced nearly 20% smaller colonies on trypticase soy agar plates, and grew slower in trypticase soy broth compared to the strain 16M. Electron microscopy revealed that strain 16M exhibited native cocco-bacillus morphology, while 16MDeltapbp1C possessed a spherical morphology. Strain 16MDeltapbp1C did not differ from strain 16M in terms of recovery from infected mouse macrophage cell line J774.1, or recovery from spleens of infected BALB/c mice, suggesting that pbp-1C is dispensable for intracellular persistence of B. melitensis. Expression of mRNA of fixR, the gene downstream of pbp-1C was similar between the strains 16M and 16MDeltapbp1C suggesting that disruption of pbp-1C did not induce any polar effects. Multiple attempts to mutate pbp-1A, pbp-1B, or pbp-2 genes failed, most probably because these genes are indispensable for viability of B. melitensis. Our findings suggest that pbp-1C regulates in vitro growth and cell morphology, whereas pbp-1A, pbp-1B, and pbp-2 are essential for viability of B. melitensis.  相似文献
