The effects of cropping history (pasture or arable) and sample pretreatment (field-moist, air-dried or air-dried and then tension or vacuum rewetted) on aggregate stability as measured by wet sieving or turbidimetry were compared. When field-moist samples were used there was a tendency for aggregate stability, as measured by wet sieving, to decline with increasing time under arable cropping (i.e. decreasing soil organic matter content). Air-drying samples caused a pronounced decline in stability of soils from under arable management and as a consequence there was a marked decline in stability with increasing time under arable. Use of tension or vacuum rewetted samples resulted in high values of stability which were unaffected by cropping history. For turbidimetry, there was a marked decline in measured stability with increasing time under arable cropping when field-moist samples were used. Air-drying caused an increase in measured stability that was relatively greater for the less stable samples. In comparison with air-dried samples, tension and vacuum rewetting caused a decrease in stability values for relatively unstable soils. It is suggested that, upon air-drying (and contraction of aggregates), additional intermolecular associations were formed between soil constituents thus conferring greater stability on aggregates. This resulted in reduced dispersion (and the release of particles <0.04 mm in diameter) from the surfaces of aggregates and slaked aggregate fragments following rapid rewetting. As a consequence stability as measured by turbidimetry was increased by drying. For aggregates from a predominantly arable history, this stabilization was not great enough to prevent slaking occurring following rapid rewetting, with the formation of a large proportion of stabilized fragments <0.5 mm in diameter. The stability of these aggregates as measured by wet sieving was therefore decreased by drying.  相似文献

Abstract Two-year-old blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner), were stocked into five replicate breeding hapas (1·2 m × 1·2 m × 2·7 m) at a density of six males and six females per hapa. At stocking, males and females averaged 415 and 225g respectively. During the 50-day trial (July-August), 62900 seed (eggs and sac-fry) representing 78 spawns, were collected from 30 females. In comparative treatments, prestocking surgical removal of the male's maxillary bone did not influence hatchery productivity. However, removal of the female's maxillary bone significantly reduced frequency of repeat spawning and clutch size (P < 0·05). Removal of the maxillary bone also influenced weight gain of broodstock. It is hypothesized that these significant responses were due to the surgical removal of the maxillary bone and the subsequent breakdown in dominance hierarchies.  相似文献

Early blight disease, caused by Alternaria solani Sorauer, is a serious disease of potato foliage and tubers that occurs in most potato‐growing regions world‐wide. Developing new potato cultivars with resistance to early blight may reduce losses in the field and in storage, and lessen the need for fungicide applications. A total of 280 clones, derived from 72 maternal half‐sib families from a diploid random‐mated hybrid population of Solarium phureja×Solarium stenotomum were examined for resistance to early blight. The clones that were evaluated in a replicated field trial for 2 years in Pennsylvania, USA, had similar early blight intensity both years. Significant differences were found among families, within families and for the interaction of years × within families. Broad‐sense heritability for resistance, measured as area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), was estimated as 0.73, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.65‐0.78, and narrow‐sense heritability was estimated as 0.61 ± 0.29 (P = 0.05). The correlation of AUDPC for early blight between years was 0.57 (P < 0.0001). These results suggest that this diploid population is worthy of use in breeding for early blight resistance.  相似文献

The effects of growth of various crop and forage species on microbial biomass C, soil carbohydrate content and monosaccharide composition, and mean weight diameter (MWD) were investigated in two field experiments. One experiment was conducted over one growing season (4 months) whereas the other had been conducted for three consecutive growing seasons (32 months). In the four-month experiment, aggregate stability (estimated as MWD) of soil from experimental plots followed the order Italian ryegrass > prairie grass > phacelia = pea = maize. At the 32-month site the order was perennial ryegrass > annual ryegrass > perennial white clover = barley. At both sites crops with the greatest root mass and root length density had the greatest effect on increasing MWD. In all cases, rhizosphere soil had a significantly higher microbial biomass and MWD than non-rhizosphere soil. However, organic C, total content of acid-hydrolysable carbohydrate and content of individual monosaccharides in acid hydrolysates were similar in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil. The fraction of soil carbohydrate extractable with hot water (representing about 6-8% of the total carbohydrate content) was significantly higher in the rhizosphere soil. This fraction has a galactose plus mannose over arabinose plus xylose ratio of 2.1–2.3 indicating that it was predominantly of microbial origin. It is suggested that the carbohydrate fraction extractable with hot water is made up of exocellular microbial polysaccharides that are involved in stabilizing soil aggregates in the rhizosphere. By comparison with arable crop species, grass species have a larger root mass and root length density, and therefore a higher microbial biomass and larger production of carbohydrate extractable with hot water. As a result they have a more marked effect on improving soil aggregate stability.  相似文献

Two cases of urinary bladder eversion are described in association with third-degree perineal lacerations in the mare. One case of eversion followed surgical repair of the perineal defect. The other occurred spontaneously in a 5-month postpartum mare awaiting repair of a third-degree perineal laceration. Both everted bladders contained the pelvic flexure of the large colon, and in 1 case a bladder rent allowed evisceration. Surgical intervention was required, and was successful in one case.  相似文献

The principles and concepts which provide an overall prospective for coordinating modeling activities with other aspects of the environment to obtain ecologically and sociologically compatible and economically feasible –pest management –are discussed. The discussion on off–line use of models emphasizes the utility of the models of different complexity in research and management. The use of simple models in the on–line management emphasizes the fact that the accuracy of the model can be sacrificed for more information from the real system. To this extent, implementation does not have to wait for complete and very accurate model development. On the other hand, research and understanding of the ecosystem will increase from complex modeling efforts and should continue.  相似文献

Changes in soil solution composition and concentrations of exchangeable cations and mineral N in undisturbed cores of pasture soil were investigated in two experiments following applications of sheep urine to the cores. The major cations applied in the urine were K+ and Na+, and the major anions were HCO3? and Cl?. Addition of urine increased concentrations of exchangeable K+, Na+ and NH4+ and measured ionic strength of the soil solution throughout the surface 15 cm of soil, demonstrating that the urine moved through the core by macropore flow immediately following addition. Immediately following urine application the ionic strength in soil solution in the surface 2.5 cm of soil increased from 4–6 MM to 24–41 mM. Hydrolysis of urine-urea was extremely rapid, and in less than 1 d high concentrations of NH4+-N (i.e. 270–370 mg N kg?1) had accumulated in the surface 0–2.5 cm of the urine patch, and soil pH had risen by over one unit. Nitrification then proceeded and, after approximately 15 d, NO3? became the dominant form of mineral N present. During nitrification, soil pH declined and the ionic strength of the soil solution increased substantially with NO3? becoming the dominant anion present in solution. There were concomitant increases in the concentrations of Ca2+ and, to a lesser extent, Mg2+ in the soil solution as NO3? concentrations increased. After approximately 30 d, concentrations of exchangeable NO3? had risen to 250–330 mg N kg?1, soil solution NO3? concentrations had increased to about 80 mmol, dm?3, and ionic strength in the soil solution had increased to 130–140 mM. These results demonstrate the dominating effect of N transformations in causing large fluctuations in the pH, ionic composition and ionic strength of the soil solution in the urine patch. It was concluded that nutrient availability in the patch was affected directly by nutrient addition in urine, and also probably indirectly through the fluctuations in soil solution pH and ionic strength that occur.  相似文献
