The behavioral reactivity in an "open-field" test and plasma cortisol levels were studied in 72 pigs from 12 litters fed for 3 wk one of three diets with different levels of tryptophan: deficient (.14%), adequate (.23%), or excess (.32%). "Open-field" tests were performed three times: 5 d (day W + 5), 23 d (day W + 23) and 45 d (day W + 45) after weaning. The exploration time and the number of grunts provided an adequate measure of the individual emotional reactivity at day W + 5. Significant correlations were obtained between exploration time and the number of grunts at each time (r = -.83 at day W + 5; r = -.46 at day W + 23; r = -.71 at day W + 45). The distinction between animals remained (P less than .05) in terms of exploration time at both 23 and 45 d after weaning. At day W + 23, exploration time was lower in the group fed the adequate diet than in the two other groups. This effect was maintained subsequently after feeding all pigs the same adequate diet (day W + 45). In 36 pigs slaughtered at day W + 23, brain TRP concentration was higher with the excess dietary TRP than with deficient or adequate levels. Conversely, other plasma amino acids (particularly threonine) accumulated only in the brains of pigs fed the deficient diet. Plasma cortisol level assayed at weaning (W) and 2 wk later increased with age and was higher in 16-h fasted (day W + 15) than in 3-h fasted (day W + 17) pigs. Correlations were observed within litters in the fasting state, between the cortisol level and behavioral traits measured at day W + 23 (r = .70 for number of grunts, r = -.60 for exploration time). Dietary TRP did not affect the plasma cortisol level irrespective of the nutritional state after weaning. However, an interaction was noted between plasma cortisol and TRP status (P less than .05). Although dietary TRP induced large variations in brain amino acids and 5-hydroxyindole concentrations, changes in behavioral and cortisol responses were relatively minor.  相似文献

The five enigmatic cocoon stars, after which the Quintuplet cluster was christened, have puzzled astronomers since their discovery. Their extraordinary cool, featureless thermal spectra have been attributed to various stellar types from young to highly evolved, whereas their absolute luminosities place them among the supergiants. We present diffraction-limited images from the Keck 1 telescope that resolve this debate with the identification of rotating spiral plumes characteristic of colliding-wind binary "pinwheel" nebulae. Such elegant spiral structures, found around high-luminosity Wolf-Rayet stars, have recently been implicated in the behavior of supernovae light curves in the radio and optical.  相似文献

Tryptophan (TRP) content in the protein of the weaning diet was varied from deficient (.70 g/16 g N) to adequate (1.15 g/16 g N) and excess (1.60 g/16 g N) in diets fed to 108 pigs from d 5 to d 26 after weaning (W) and in 72 pigs from d 26 after weaning to slaughter (100 kg live weight) to assess immediate and long-term effects of TRP on performance. Daily weight gain and feed efficiency were improved when dietary TRP was increased from deficient to adequate (+60 and +40%, respectively). Concurrently, daily feed intake was elevated moderately (+15%). No further improvement was observed with excess TRP. In the low TRP group, gain/feed was significantly poorer up to 25 kg live weight, but this effect did not continue later. Although no compensatory growth could be shown in the group fed the deficient diet, growth retardation was very small (1.5%; P greater than .10) at slaughter. Early changes in TRP supply did not affect either carcass or meat quality. Behavioral reactivity, as determined on day W + 5 in an "open-field" test, did not affect early performance, but growth rate during the growing-finishing stage (3.2%) or the whole period (2.5%) was greater by nonemotional than by emotional pigs. Plasma amino acid contents in blood samples, withdrawn on day W + 15 (fed state) and W + 17 (fasted state), were consistent with the effect of TRP on growth rates. However, in the fasted state, a diet x reactivity interaction suggested that TRP removal from the plasma was less rapid in nonemotional than in emotional pigs. Furthermore, increased plasma concentrations of essential amino acids and urea in the latter group suggested that protein and amino acid catabolism was more rapid in emotional than in nonemotional pigs. These data are discussed relative to the effect of the behavioral type of pig on its TRP requirement.  相似文献

The instability of some industrially important synthetic azo colorants, including sunset yellow, azorubine, and allura red, toward gum arabic in aqueous solution has been a long-standing problem for the beverage and confectionery industries. Precipitation of these colorants causes the deterioration of product appearance and properties. This work examines the origin and nature of the problem by analysis of the precipitate and thermodynamic studies of gum arabic-colorant interactions using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The presence of divalent alkaline earth metals in gum arabic samples, that is, calcium and magnesium, is shown to be responsible for the precipitation of the azo colorants. There is no direct interaction between gum arabic and the colorant molecules, and the precipitate is formed likely due to the mediation/bridging by the divalent cations. The thermodynamic knowledge gained from the ITC studies, for example, binding affinity, stoichiometry, and enthalpy, enables interpretation of many industrial observations.  相似文献

Soils from fifteen field experiments in the United Kingdom and one in France that compared direct drilling with mouldboard ploughing were examined with respect to their composition and physical properties. Indices of the stability and shrinkage of soil aggregates were obtained by measurement and an index of compactability was derived from an established relationship. It was hypothesized that these properties were possible determinants of soil responses to zero-tillage.Aggregate stability and shrinkage were correlated with organic carbon and clay content, respectively. Organic matter contents were greater at the surface of direct-drilled soils than in the complete topsoil layer after direct drilling or ploughing. In some cases the increase in organic matter significantly improved the physical properties of the soils.The three indices, of stability, shrinkage and compactability, were each ranked in high intermediate or low groups, and the soils classified according to their ratings in these groups. The resulting classification broadly agreed with a previous one of soil suitability for sequential direct drilling mainly based on experimental agronomy.  相似文献

A model is presented to explain the formation and morphologies of surfactant-silicate mesostructures. Three processes are identified: multidentate binding of silicate oligomers to the cationic surfactant, preferential silicate polymerization in the interface region, and charge density matching between the surfactant and the silicate. The model explains present experimental data, including the transformation between lamellar and hexagonal mesophases, and provides a guide for predicting conditions that favor the formation of lamellar, hexagonal, or cubic mesostructures. Model Q(230) proposed by Mariani and his co-workers satisfactorily fits the x-ray data collected on the cubic mesostructure material. This model suggests that the silicate polymer forms a unique infinite silicate sheet sitting on the gyroid minimal surface and separating the surfactant molecules into two disconnected volumes.  相似文献

Examining ecological limits to shade acclimation at whole-plant level is determinant for evaluating the success of sapling establishment in low-light environments. We studied nutritional effects on whole-plant development in response to shade in two Mediterranean forest tree species with different successional status: the early-successional Pinus halepensis Mill. and the late-successional Quercus pubescens Wild. Through a nursery-based factorial experimental design approach, we measured height increment along 2 years and final leaf, stem and root biomass in both species saplings subjected to two lights and two soil nutrient availability treatments. The shade avoidance response was exclusive to P. halepensis, appeared as timely dependent, and persisted longer in saplings exposed to higher nutrient availability. Q. pubescens benefited from the higher nutrient availability by lowering the light-driven plastic response in aerial support investment and belowground carbon allocation, whereas P. halepensis heightened its light-driven plastic response. These contrasted responses are thus clearly related to the shade acclimation strategy of each species: the shade-intolerant P. halepensis enhances shade avoidance when non-nutrient-limited, whereas the shade-tolerant Q. pubescens assumes a conservative strategy by limiting phenotypic plasticity-induced costs. Maintaining greater shade avoidance in non-nutrient-limited soil conditions might be an adaptive advantage for P. halepensis seedlings growing in the understory, in response to gap formation in the overstory. In contrast, the more conservative and less costly shade responsiveness of Q. pubescens may confer it a better adaptive advantage in long-term light-limited environments.  相似文献

The use of shelterwoods to favour the development of natural or underplanted seedlings is common in temperate forests but rare in the pine forests of the Mediterranean area. Our aim was to assess the use of shelterwoods in Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) woodlands in southern France to promote the survival and growth of two co-occurring oak species: the deciduous Quercus pubescens and the evergreen Quercus ilex.Twelve Aleppo pine stands were selected and differentially thinned to create a light shelterwood (basal area = 10 m2/ha, irradiance 52%), a medium shelterwood (basal area = 19 m2/ha, irradiance 33%) and a dense shelterwood (basal area = 32 m2/ha, irradiance 13%). A total of 1248 sowing points, half composed of Q. pubescens and half of Q. ilex, were then set up in these three conditions. Seedling survival and growth were monitored for 3 years. Plant stress was assessed by measuring predawn leaf potential and photosynthetic performance through the Fv/Fm ratio. Soil moisture was also recorded at two depths during two growing seasons.Survival was high for both species in all three conditions due to three consecutive wet years. The lowest survival was recorded for Q. pubescens in the dense shelterwoods. Growth in diameter and height increased from the dense to the light shelterwoods. Shrubs developed more strongly in the light shelterwood, and increasing shrub cover enhanced height growth. Photosynthetic performance was lowest for Q. pubescens in dense shelterwoods and highest in light shelterwoods, whereas the reverse was true for Q. ilex. The lowest predawn potentials were recorded in the dense shelterwoods even though higher soil water content values were measured in this treatment during the summer drought.We show that light shelterwoods were more beneficial to growth than denser ones, indicating control mainly by light availability during the 3 years of the study. However, as lower soil moisture at 30-50 cm depth and faster understorey development were also recorded in this condition, more extended observation is needed to determine whether this benefit persists in subsequent years.  相似文献
