This article uses a Bayesian hierarchical model to quantify the adverse health effects associated with in-utero exposure to
methylmercury. By allowing for study-to-studyas well as outcome-to-outcome variability, the approach provides a useful meta-analytic
tool for multi-outcome, multi-study environmental risk assessments. The analysis presented here expands on the findings of
a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) committee, charged with advising the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
on an appropriate approach to conducting a risk assessment for methylmercury. The NAS committee, for which the senior author
(Ryan) was a committee member, reviewed the findings from several conflicting studies and reported the results from a Bayesian
hierarchical model that synthesized information across several studies and for several outcomes. Although the NAS committee
did not suggest that the hierarchical model be used as the actual basis for a methylmercury risk assessment, the results from
the model were used to justify and support the final recommendation that the risk analysis be based on data from a study conducted
in the Faroe Islands, which had found a positive association between in-utero exposure to methylmercury and impaired neurological

Exposure to UV-A radiation is known to induce discrete lesions in DNA and the generation of free radicals that lead to a wide array of skin diseases. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) contains several polyphenols with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Because the major representative components of strawberry are anthocyanins, these may significantly contribute to its properties. To test this hypothesis, methanolic extracts from the Sveva cultivar were analyzed for anthocyanin content and for their ability to protect human dermal fibroblasts against UV-A radiation, as assayed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenytetrazolium bromide and Comet assays. Five anthocyanin pigments were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry. Moreover, the strawberry extract showed a photoprotective activity in fibroblasts exposed to UV-A radiation, increasing cellular viability, and diminishing DNA damage, as compared to control cells. Overall, our data show that strawberry contains compounds that confer photoprotective activity in human cell lines and may protect skin against the adverse effects of UV-A radiation. 相似文献

Substantial equivalence is a key concept in the evaluation of unintended and potentially harmful metabolic impact consequent to a genetic modification of food. The application of unsupervised multivariate data analysis to the metabolic profiles is expected to improve the effectiveness of such evaluation. The present study uses NMR spectra of hydroalcoholic extracts, as holistic representations of the metabolic profiles of grapes, to evaluate the effect of the insertion of one or three copies of the DefH9-iaaM construct in plants of Silcora and Thompson Seedless cultivars. The comparison of the metabolic profiles of transgenic derivatives with respect to their corresponding natural lines pointed out that the overall metabolic changes occur in the same direction, independent of the host genotype, although the two cultivars are modified to different extents. A higher number of copies not only produces a larger effect but also modifies the whole pattern of perturbed metabolites. 相似文献

Facing current climate challenges and drastically reduced chemical options for plant protection, the exploitation of RNA interference (RNAi) as an agricultural biotechnology tool has unveiled possible new solutions to the global problems of agricultural losses caused by pests and other biotic and abiotic stresses. While the use of RNAi as a tool in agriculture is still limited to a few transgenic crops, and only adopted in restricted parts of the world, scientists and industry are already seeking innovations in leveraging and exploiting the potential of RNAi in the form of RNA‐based biocontrol compounds for external applications. Here, we highlight the expanding research and development pipeline, commercial landscape and regulatory environment surrounding the pursuit of RNA‐based biocontrol compounds with improved environmental profiles. The commitments of well‐established agrochemical companies to invest in research endeavours and the role of start‐up companies are crucial for the successful development of practical applications for these compounds. Additionally, the availability of standardized guidelines to tackle regulatory ambiguities surrounding RNA‐based biocontrol compounds will help to facilitate the entire commercialization process. Finally, communication to create awareness and public acceptance will be key to the deployment of these compounds. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

Strawberry contains high levels of micronutrients and phytochemical compounds. These exhibit functional roles in plant growth and metabolism and are also essential for the nutritional and organoleptic qualities of the fruit. The aim of the present work was to better characterize the phytochemical and antioxidant profiles of the fruit of nine different genotypes of strawberry, by measuring the total flavonoid, anthocyanin, vitamin C, and folate contents. Cultivar effects on the total antioxidant capacities of strawberries were also tested. In addition, the individual contribution of the main antioxidant compounds was assessed by HPLC separation coupled to an online postcolumn antioxidant detection system. This study showed the important role played by the genetic background on the chemical and antioxidant profiles of strawberry fruits. Significant differences were found between genotypes for the total antioxidant capacity and for all tested classes of compounds. The HPLC analyses confirmed qualitative and quantitative variability in the antioxidant profiles. These studies show that differences exist among cultivars, applicable in dietary studies in human subjects. 相似文献

The organic fraction soluble in different organic solvents with increasing polarity was studied during the composting process, following its transformation from raw material until the stable final product with the aim to establish new quality indices of compost maturity. All apolar fractions during the composting process had a reduction higher than 50%. Part of the compounds have been utilized by the microflora as energetic material and to perform the biotransformations, and part has been transformed in molecule like the humic molecules. However, in our conditions a relevant part (36%) of apolar material is recovered at the end of the biotransformation. The spectroscopic analysis indicates in the final product an increase of lipidic compounds, as esters or acids as well as hydrocarbons with longer linear aliphatic chain. 相似文献

ABSTRACTCommercial strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa) are one of the most investigated berries for nutritional and nutraceutical properties. A strawberry breeding program, including inter-specific back-crosses, is now producing new genotypes with increased vitamin C, folates, and phenols combined with important commercial traits. The release of new cultivars with a high content of bioactive compounds, which may contribute to health, wellness, and reduced disease risk, is expected from this program. The ultimate goal is to properly obtain and integrate new scientific knowledge from genetic, agronomic, and biomedical studies that may bring acceptance from food agencies for specific health claims on new strawberry cultivars. 相似文献

Electrolyte leakage from leaf discs of three Ulmus species when challenged with cultural filtrate of an NAN aggressive isolate of Ophiostoma ulmi paralleled their susceptibility to the disease in the field. But the correlation was not working with some hybrids derived from the common field elm showing intermediate resistance. The possible explanation will be checked in further tests which are in progress to assess the possibility of using this technique in early screening for resistance. 相似文献
