According to European Union recommendations, a test method has been developed to evaluate the effects of veterinary pharmaceuticals on dung feeding insects. This test method was evaluated with the dung beetle Aphodius constans by using fecal residues of ivermectin after a pour-on administration. Dung of different age (and thus containing different concentrations of ivermectin) as well as mixtures of highly-contaminated spiked dung with untreated control dung were studied in five test runs in two laboratories. The concentration of ivermectin (active substance; a.s.) in the dung samples was verified analytically. The main test endpoint was the survival of first instar larvae. The LC50 using dung directly obtained from treated cattle ranged from 470 to 692 microg a.s. kg(-1) dung (dry weight; d.w.) and 67 to 97 microg a.s. kg(-1) dung (fresh weight; f.w.). Using mixtures, the outcome of two tests was almost identical: 770 to 781 microg a.s. kg(-1) dung (d.w.); 109 to 132 microg a.s. kg(-1) dung (f.w.). In comparison to the LC50 values obtained when ivermectin was spiked in control dung at several concentrations (LC50 880-985 microg a.s. kg(-1) dung (d.w.)), the LC50 values were again very similar. Three conclusions can be drawn from these results. The proposed test method seems to be robust and allows for the initiation of an international validation process (including ringtesting). Because of only small differences found in tests in which the test substance was spiked into control dung and those in which dung from treated cattle was applied, the use of a standard test method is proposed. Conservation for the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), a federally endangered species in the United States of America, is typically focused on local maternity sites; however, the species is a regional migrant, interacting with the environment at multiple spatial scales. Hierarchical levels of management may be necessary, but we have limited knowledge of landscape-level ecology, distribution, and connectivity of suitable areas in complex landscapes.
Objectives
We sought to (1) identify factors influencing M. sodalis maternity colony distribution in a mosaic landscape, (2) map suitable maternity habitat, and (3) quantify connectivity importance of patches to direct conservation action.
Methods
Using 3 decades of occurrence data, we tested a priori, hypothesis-driven habitat suitability models. We mapped suitable areas and quantified connectivity importance of habitat patches with probabilistic habitat availability metrics.
Results
Factors improving landscape-scale suitability included limited agriculture, more forest cover, forest edge, proximity to medium-sized water bodies, lower elevations, and limited urban development. Areas closer to hibernacula and rivers were suitable. Binary maps showed that 30% of the study area was suitable for M. sodalis and 29% was important for connectivity. Most suitable patches were important for intra-patch connectivity and far fewer contributed to inter-patch connectivity.
Conclusions
While simple models may be effective for small, homogenous landscapes, complex models are needed to explain habitat suitability in large, mixed landscapes. Suitability modeling identified factors that made sites attractive as maternity areas. Connectivity analysis improved our understanding of important areas for bats and prioritized areas to target for restoration.
L -Phosphinothricin, the parent α-amino acid of the herbicide glufosinate-ammonium, has been obtained in high enantiomeric purity by three different methods. The stereoselective alkylation of a D -valine-derived bis-lactim ether, followed by the hydrolysis of the heterocyclic intermediate, represents an attractive approach for gram-scale quantities in the laboratory. Another very efficient access to L -phosphinothricin consists of the asymmetric hydrogenation of a prochiral α-acylamido acrylate with a chiral bis-phosphine-rhodium catalyst, while the reaction of chiral pre-built C-4-fragments, like L -vinylglycine or L -2-amino-4-halobutyric acid, which can be obtained from the inexpensive starting materials L -aspartic acid and L -glutamic acid, with (methyl)phosphinic acid derivatives represents a third route which allows the production of nearly enantiomerically pure L -phosphinothricin. 相似文献
LPS antibody reaction of S. Typhimurium was detected in a total of 111 two- to ten-week-old pigs, which had been exposed to experimental oral infection with this serovar in 16 separate experiments. The total antibody level was determined according to the meat juice ELISA provided for the Salmonella control programme and the antibody concentrations of the isotopes IgG1, IgG2, IgA and IgM. Although there were significant differences between the individual experiments with respect to the reaction intensity and proportion of the individual immune globulin isotypes, the following general statements on the dynamics of the antibody reaction can be made: Clearly elevated antibody levels could be observed one week after the onset of infection. After one and two weeks, respectively, 22.5 and 52.9% of the infected animals showed antibody levels which were to be evaluated as positive in the sense of the Salmonella control programme (> or = 40%). While the concentration of the IgM-related antibodies decreased again during the second week already, the antibody concentration of IgG1 and IgG2 continued to increase until the end of the experiment after 3 weeks. The clear differences in the reactions between the experiments cannot be explained solely by defined conditions of infection such as strain of infection, infective dose or age of the pigs. Obviously, other non-defined or non-recognized factors may have a decisive influence on the dynamics of the antibody reaction in the animal groups. 相似文献
This preliminary study investigated the potential role of staphylococcal superantigens in the pathogenesis of canine pyoderma. The staphylococcal enterotoxins A (SEA), SEB, SEC and SED, and the toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) were assayed in isolates from skins of dogs with pyoderma. Culture supernatants from 25 of 96 isolates were positive for multiple superantigens, with SEA and SEC being the most frequently detected. In in vitro stimulation of canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells and quantitative flow cytometry revealed that low concentrations of SEA and SEB were potent stimulators of blastogenesis of T cells. 相似文献
Our study area in the Chaobai watershed, upstream of Miyun Reservoir, has been undergoing agricultural water transfers to downstream municipal uses in Beijing. We examine the impacts of water reallocation on crop production and farmers’ income and discuss issues relating to current compensation mechanisms. We use data from a survey of 349 farm households and their farm plots in the upper Chaobai watershed within Hebei province. Water reallocation from upstream to downstream areas has reduced agricultural water supply and the area irrigated. Regression results show that in plots deprived of irrigation, maize yields decrease by 21% and crop revenues decline by 32%. On average, losing irrigation on one hectare of cultivated land reduces net crop income by 2422 yuan. We examine compensation arrangements and social equity for the major policies implemented in the region and we identify gaps between current compensation levels and farmers’ income and production losses. The current compensation received by farmers is generally lower than the losses incurred due to reduced irrigation. A more appropriate compensation mechanism is called for in future water transfers. 相似文献
Summary The wheat area in developing countries, including China, is around 100 million ha. To address the needs of these very diverse wheat growing areas, CIMMYT has defined 12 wheat mega-environments (ME). A ME is defined as broad, not necessarily continuous often transcontinental area with similar biotic and abiotic stresses, cropping systems and consumer preferences. The factors describing each ME are presented.CIMMYT's breeding methodology is centered around the development of widely adapted germplasm with high and stable yield across a wide range of environments. Segregating populations are alternating screened in two diverse environments in Mexico. One key requirement is that all germplasm is tested under near optimum conditions for its yield potential. The second one is multi-locational testing of advanced lines at sites that represent a given ME (key locations) and careful screening of germplasm for tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses specific to that environment. This methodology has permitted the pyramiding of a large number of multiple resistance genes for use against a wide spectrum of diseases and tolerance to abiotic stresses within each ME. In addition, the widespread testing of lines allows the identification of traits which are beneficial in several environments. Data from international nurseries are used to further delineate environments within an ME. This approach has proven to be successful since around 70% of the spring wheat area in developing countries (excluding China) is planted to varieties derived directly or indirectly from CIMMYT germplasm. A full-dimensional quantum dynamics simulation of a hydrogen atom reacting with methane on an accurate ab initio potential energy surface is reported. Based on first-principles theory, thermal rate constants are predicted with an accuracy comparable to (or even exceeding) experimental precision. The theoretical prediction is within the range of the significantly varied experimental rate constants reported by different groups. This level of accuracy has previously been achieved only for smaller, three-or four-atom reactive systems. Comparison with classical transition state theory confirms the importance of quantum mechanical tunneling for the rate constant below 400 kelvin. 相似文献
