The current study was initiated to evaluate the efficacy of physical methods (hot water, aerated steam, electron treatment) and agents of natural origin (resistance inducers, plant derived products, micro-organisms) as seed treatments of carrots for control of Alternaria dauci and A. radicina. Control of both Alternaria species by seed treatment with the resistance inducers was generally poor. Results were also not satisfactory with most of the formulated commercial micro-organism preparations. Based on the average of five field trials, one of these, BA 2552 (Pseudomonas chlororaphis), provided a low but significant increase in plant stand. Among the experimental micro-organisms, the best results were obtained with Pseudomonas sp. strain MF 416 and Clonostachys rosea strain IK726. A similar level of efficacy was provided by seed treatment with an emulsion (1%) of thyme oil in water. Good and consistent control was generally achieved with the physical methods aerated steam, hot water and electron treatment. Aerated steam treatment was, apart from the thiram-containing chemical standard, the best single treatment, and its performance may at least partially be due to extensive pre-testing, resulting in dosages optimally adapted to the respective seed lot. In some of the experiments the effect of the hot water treatment, which was tested at a fixed, not specifically adapted dosage, was significantly improved when combined with a Pseudomonas sp. MF 416 or C. rosea IK726 treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the outcome of experiments in which the same seed treatment methods and agents were tested in other seed-borne vegetable pathosystems.  相似文献

Two groups of commercial quality ("acceptable") pearls produced using two donors, and a group of "acceptable" pearls from other donors were analyzed using reflectance UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Three pearls with different colors produced by the same donor showed different absorption spectra. Cream and gold colored pearls showed a wide absorption from 320 to about 460 nm, while there was just slight reflectance around 400 nm by the white pearl with a pink overtone. Cream and gold pearls reached a reflectance peak at 560 to 590 nm, while the white pearl with pink overtone showed slightly wider absorption in this region. Both cream and gold pearls showed an absorption peak after the reflectance peak, at about 700 nm for the cream pearl and 750 nm for the gold pearl. Two other pearls produced by the same donor (white with cream overtone and cream with various overtones) showed similar spectra, which differed in their intensity. One of these pearls had very high lustre and its spectrum showed a much higher percentage reflectance than the second pearl with inferior lustre. This result may indicate that reflectance is a useful quantitative indicator of pearl lustre. The spectra of two white pearls resulting from different donors with the same color nacre (silver) showed a reflectance at 260 nm, followed by absorption at 280 nm and another reflectance peak at 340 nm. After this peak the spectra for these pearls remained flat until a slight absorption peak around 700 nm. Throughout the visible region, all white pearls used in this study showed similar reflectance spectra although there were differences in reflectance intensity. Unlike the spectral results from white pearls, the results from yellow and gold pearls varied according to color saturation of the pearl. The results of this study show that similarities between absorption and reflectance spectra of cultured pearls resulting from the same saibo donor are negligible and could not be detected with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Nevertheless, this technique could have a role to play in developing less subjective methods of assessing pearl quality and in further studies of the relationships between pearl quality and that of the donor and recipient oysters.  相似文献

The growing demand for renewable energy sources in Sweden has resulted in an increased use of forest biomass that now includes logging residues. However, concern has been raised that the moderate increase in biomass removal associated with whole-tree harvesting results in a significant increase in nutrient removal, which in turn has a negative effect on future forest growth. Productivity over 31 years in planted Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) in northern Sweden following three different harvest intensities is reported from a field experiment with exceptionally large growth reductions following whole-tree harvest. The three harvest intensities were applied in a randomized block design with four blocks: (i) conventional stem-wood harvest up to a top diameter of 5 cm (CH); (ii) whole-tree harvest of all above-stump biomass (WTH); (iii) branch and stem harvest with needles left on site (BSH). Recovery rate of biomass was almost 100% and the logging residues left were evenly spread over the 25- by 25-m experimental plots. Stand growth was negatively affected by WTH: basal area after 31 years was significantly lower following WTH (10.5 m2 ha−1) as compared to CH (14.0 m2 ha−1, p = 0.005) and BSH (14.2 m2 ha−1p = 0.003). Annual height growth of a sub-sample of trees (10 undamaged trees per plot, or 40 per treatment) was used to estimate and compare long-term effects on site productivity. This showed that stand growth loss resulted from a significant but temporary reduction in site productivity on WTH plots over a 5-year period (years 8-12, 1984-1988). Nitrogen is the major growth-limiting nutrient in boreal Swedish forests, and the N-content of needles during that period suggests that the temporal reduction in site productivity (i.e., stand growth) was primarily due to increased nitrogen loss with WTH.  相似文献

Grey‐sided voles (Myodes rufocanus) and bank voles (Myodes glareolus) co‐exist in boreal forests in northern Scandinavia. Previous studies suggest that the 2 species interact interspecifically, the grey‐sided vole being the dominant species. We tested the hypothesis that bank voles shift their diet due to competition with the dominant grey‐sided vole by studying stable isotope ratios in both species. Muscle samples were taken from voles in patches of old forest occupied by only bank voles and patches of old forest occupied by both grey‐sided voles and bank voles. We found that: (i) stable isotope ratios of bank voles differed in areas with and without grey‐sided voles; and that (ii) the stable isotope ratios of bank voles were more similar to those of grey‐sided voles in areas where grey‐sided voles were absent. Our data suggests that grey‐sided voles forced bank voles to change their diet due to interspecific competition.  相似文献

Mitigating climate change and securing a supply of energy may be achieved, in part, by substituting fossil fuels with bioenergy from stumps and roots. However, the use of stumps would result in a reduction of the carbon pool and thus, from a greenhouse gas emission perspective, there is a trade-off between using stumps for bioenergy and retaining them in the carbon pool associated with dead organic matter. The objective of this study was to show whether, from a carbon balance perspective and over the short and long-terms, stumps are more important as a source of energy that replaces fossil fuels, or as a carbon sink.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to analyse, at the stand level, how genetical or simply biotechnological progress affects the socially optimal rotation period and the value of forest land. The question has relevance for forest policy, since in many countries there are rules which regulate the shortest permissible rotation period. Given that biotechnology improves over time, one could ask in what direction and at what rate the shortest permissible rotation period should be changed. The results of this paper provide some qualitative insights into the matter.  相似文献
