Abstract

Molybdenum applications had no effect on the grain yield of wheat or barley. Application of limestone increased barley yield at one of the three locations and had no effect on wheat yield at any location. The Mo concentration of boot stage tissue increased with added Mo. In most cases, 0.56 kg Mo/ha applications increased the Mo concentration of boot stage tissue above 10 ppm. Increases in Mo concentration due to added Mo were generally greater at higher rates of limestone application but the Mo x limestone interaction was statistically significant only for barley at the location having the lowest pH and for wheat at the two locations with the lowest pH. Molybdenum applied as a foliar spray was found to be an effective means of increasing the Mo concentration of cereal tissues. In the case of suspected Mo deficiency in cereals, a foliar application of 0.28 kg Mo/ha should correct the problem without any ill effect from an animal nutrition standpoint.  相似文献

Abstract

To avoid toxicity resulting in reduced crop yields and/or phytotoxic symptoms on the foliage, information on the residual effect of micronutrient fertilization after periods of application is desirable. This article includes discussion on the micronutrients copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), because they are essential and are of concern from plant and animal standpoints. In general, no detrimental effects in yield reduction or phytotoxicity were noted from Cu applications of up to 50 kg Cu ha?1 to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Barley was an exception where 50 kg Cu ha?1 decreased yield by about 12% in the first‐year crop. The Cu levels in plants did not exceed 9 mg kg?1. Studies showed that Zn applications of 50 kg ha?1 for 2 years in succession and the resulting crop tissue Zn levels as high as 105 mg kg?1 did not cause any phytotoxicity in cereals. The results of this study suggest that cereals can tolerate high levels of Cu and Zn.  相似文献

加拿大一枝黄花是一种外来入侵的有害生物,原产于北美洲的菊科多年生草本植物,它有种子与根茎两种繁殖途径,是一种恶性杂草,弊端多于益处,为检疫对象。最初是上海作为花卉观赏引进栽培,然后逐渐向周边地区漫延。亭湖区是在08年有零星发生,近几年虽然对一些重点区域进行了铲除,但发生面积仍在扩大,发生量在增加,因此,为了遏制加拿大一枝黄花的发生与漫延,近两年我们对疫区进行了GPS定位与跟踪防控。  相似文献

Climate and land-use changes are expected to cause many species to shift into or beyond the boundaries of protected areas, leading to large turnover in species composition. Here, we tested whether long-established protected areas in Canada were more robust to such climate change impacts than areas with no formal protection by measuring changes in modeled butterfly species distributions (n = 139) within them. We used a recently established distribution modeling technique, Maxent, to model butterfly species’ distributions in two epochs (1900-1930 and 1960-1990). We compared rates of butterfly species richness and composition change within protected areas against distributions of randomly selected, ecologically similar, but non-protected, areas. Change in species richness and composition within protected areas were, for the most part, the same as changes observed among random areas outside protected area boundaries. These results suggest that existing protected area networks in Canada have provided little buffer against the impacts of climate change on butterfly species richness, possibly because land-use change surrounding long-standing protected areas has not been substantial enough to elevate the habitat protection afforded by these protected areas relative to other areas. Although protected areas are unarguably beneficial in conserving biological diversity, their capacity to maintain habitat appears insufficient to prevent broader-scale climate changes from sweeping species beyond their boundaries.  相似文献

An oesophageal impaction, consisting of plant material and nylon fishing line, and alimentary parasitism were diagnosed and treated in a Canada goose. At presentation the bird was non-ambulatory with flaccid neck muscles, lethargic, emaciated, dehydrated and had watery brown to green faeces. Palpation of the neck revealed a solid tubular mass ventrally in the mid-cervical region with gritty material cranial to it. Radiographs disclosed an oesophageal mass containing seed or grit-like radio-opaque material, and dilated cranial oesophagus containing radio-opaque material. Laboratory investigations revealed non-regenerative anaemia, heterophilia, lymphopenia, hypoproteinaemia, and many strongyle eggs in faeces. Treatment included supportive therapy, oesophageal gavage, oesophagotomy and drug therapy. The bird recovered and was released 27 days after initial presentation.  相似文献

We modeled populations of lynx (Lynx canadensis) and snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) to determine prey densities required for persistence of lynx translocated to the southern portion of the species' range. The models suggested that a density of 1.1-1.8 hares/h is required for lynx persistence; these densities are higher than those reported for most hare populations across the USA. We found that lynx dispersal and density-independent mortality substantially increased the hare density required for lynx persistence. Reintroduction success was associated with number of release events, total number of animals released, and timing of release relative to the phase of the hare population cycle. However, no release protocol could override the negative effects of low prey density or high population losses. We conclude that successful lynx reintroduction requires high hare densities and minimal anthropogenic disturbance; few areas in the contiguous USA currently posses such qualities.  相似文献

We studied genetic diversity within and gene flow among six ‘threatened’ populations of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) inhabiting Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Mean expected heterozygosity (HE) across 11 loci spanned a narrow range between 0.74 and 0.79. Estimates of HE were in the mid to high range of those typically observed in natural populations of large mammals, including caribou, and were not suggestive of any immediate threat to survival. We concluded that recent anthropogenic fragmentation of caribou range in western Canada has yet to affect genetic diversity of populations. Analysis of population structure identified a region of relatively low gene flow corresponding with the valley of the Peace River. The highest value of FST observed between populations on the same side of the river was 0.025, whereas the lowest value that spanned the river was 0.044. Confirming this result, an assignment test demonstrated that 96.5% of animals could be assigned to the correct side of the Peace River, though only 66.0% of animals could, on average, be assigned to populations of actual origin. Taken as a whole, our results support the existence of two discrete metapopulations bisected by the Peace River, within each of which there exist multiple populations, or at least multiple regions, which experience considerably higher levels of interchange. For caribou inhabiting the boreal plains, large rivers such as the Peace and Mackenzie may serve as biologically meaningful boundaries for managing metapopulations.  相似文献

Tillage systems can influence weed seed viability and the distribution with depth of weed seeds in soil. To investigate this ‘tillage effect’, weed seed bank composition was determined at two soil depths (0–10 and 10–20 cm) in three tillage systems [mouldboard plough (MP), shallow tillage (ST), and direct drilling (DD)] established for 14 years on a sandy loam (Podzol) in Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada. The cropping system was a cool-season soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) in rotation with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The objectives were to evaluate the size and composition of the viable soil seed bank, using the seedling germination method, and to determine if the adoption of non-inversion tillage practices (DD and ST) influence seed bank parameters relative to the conventional full inversion MP. The diversity of weed species was slightly lower for MP (17 species) compared to the ST (21 species) and DD treatments (22 species). The population for most weed species was relatively low with only three common species [low cudweed (Gnaphalium uliginosum L.), creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens L.), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.)] above 5 m−2. For the total soil depth sampled (0–20 cm), weed seed population was significantly greater under DD (56 weeds m−2) and ST (66 weeds m−2), compared to MP (25 weeds m−2), and mainly related to changes in the number of annual broadleaf weeds, compared to perennial broadleaf and grasses. Comparison of the 0–10 with the 10–20 cm soil depth showed a relatively uniform weed seed distribution for the MP treatment, while a greater proportion of weed seeds was found at the lower soil depth for DD and ST. This distribution tended to be weed species dependent. Soil texture and weed seed characteristics were considered to have a critical impact on the total weed seed bank size, specifically for the 10–20 cm soil depth. Overall, the weed bank size was relatively small indicating that adoption of conservation tillage practices for sandy loams in Atlantic Canada should not cause a major change in weed community and weed populations, or present a need for significant changes in weed control management.  相似文献

Crop rotation effects, due to emerging soil ecological interactions and processes that occur with time, can have a major impact on crop productivity and soil health. 2-year potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) rotation studies were conducted during an 11-year period on a fine sandy loam (Orthic Podzol) under a cool, humid climate in Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada. Rotation partners included Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The study objective was to assess trends in yield parameters, populations and diversity in nematodes and soil-borne pathogens, and soil structural stability and organic matter retention with time. Italian ryegrass had the largest biomass of both herbage (6.5 Mg ha−1) and roots (4.8 Mg ha−1), compared to red clover or barley. Averaged across 9 years, potato tuber yield was highest under Italian ryegrass (35.0 Mg ha−1) and lowest under red clover (31.1 Mg ha−1) rotations. Differences in tuber yield among rotations was associated with soil N limitation and nematode activity, but was not evident until Year 6. Population densities of specific plant parasitic nematodes recovered from roots and soil were generally low and varied according to host plant. Root lesion (Pratylenchus spp.) and root-knot (Meloidogyne spp.) nematodes were more prevalent under red clover compared to other rotational crops. Stunt (Merlinius spp. and Tylenchorhynchus spp.) nematodes were more common under Italian ryegrass. The main organisms associated with tuber-borne disease were Rhizoctonia solani, Streptomyces spp., Fusarium spp., and Helminthosporium solani. The greatest reduction in tuber-borne diseases occurred with the potato–red clover rotation but significant differences were infrequent. Soil structural form throughout the soil profile (to 30 cm depth) was not adversely affected by the rotational treatments during the duration of the study, while soil structural stability at the soil surface (0–10 cm) was significantly improved. Losses of soil organic C, during the 11-year period ranged from marginal (4%) for rotations with Italian ryegrass, to significant (16%) under the barley rotation. Computer simulations, using the Century model, illustrated the importance of C inputs to maintain soil organic matter levels. Overall, potato crop productivity and soil organic C were generally maintained in rotations that contained Italian ryegrass, but declined under rotations with red clover and barley.  相似文献
