This study corrected the misidentification of an alien species, Salvia tiliifolia, which had been incorrectly identified as S. dugesii (a synonym of S. melissodora) in China. The distribution of S. tiliifolia in China was surveyed and it was inferred that it was probably introduced into Kunming, Yunnan in the 1990s and then spread to adjacent counties of Yunnan and south‐western Sichuan Province. The Australian weed risk assessment (WRA) was used to evaluate its invasive status. To determine the validity of Australian WRA in China, another 25 exotics representing casual alien plants, naturalised plants and invasive plants were tested. The Australian WRA was validated as a legitimate approach in China. Salvia tiliifolia scored 14, falling into the category of invasive plants. While the distribution of S. tiliifolia is currently restricted to Yunnan and a small part of Sichuan and the species has not displayed an adverse impact on local environments yet, the WRA results indicated that the species was a high risk plant. It was recommended that local land managers should monitor this species and take measures to stop its continuing expansion or eradicate it if possible. 相似文献

Recent and unprecedented scale of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) conservation in the American West enables assessment of community-level benefits afforded to other sagebrush-obligate species. We use North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) count data and machine-learning to assess predictors influencing spatial distribution and abundance of three sagebrush-obligate songbirds (Brewer’s sparrow [Spizella breweri], sagebrush sparrow [Artemisiospiza nevadensis], and sage thrasher [Oreoscoptes montanus]). We quantified co-occurrence of songbird abundance with sage-grouse lek distributions using point pattern analyses and evaluated the concurrence of songbird abundance within sage-grouse habitat restoration and landscape protection. Sagebrush land-cover predictors were positively associated with the abundance of each songbird species in models that explained 16 ? 37% of variation in BBS route level counts. Individual songbird models identified an apparent 40% threshold in sagebrush land-cover, over which songbird abundances nearly doubled. Songbird abundances were positively associated with sage-grouse distributions (P < 0.01); range-wide, landscapes supporting > 50% of males on leks also harbored 13 ? 19% higher densities of songbirds compared with range-wide mean densities. Eighty-five percent of the conifer removal conducted through the Sage Grouse Initiative coincided with high to moderate Brewer’s sparrow abundance. Wyoming’s landscape protection (i.e., “core area”) strategy for sage-grouse encompasses half the high to moderate abundance sagebrush sparrow and sage thrasher populations. In the Great Basin half the high to moderate abundance sagebrush sparrow and sage thrasher populations coincide with sage-grouse Fire and Invasive Assessment Tool priorities, where conservation actions are being focused in an attempt to reduce the threat of wildfire and invasive plants. Our work illustrates spatially targeted actions being implemented ostensibly for sage-grouse largely overlap high abundance centers for three sagebrush obligate passerines and are likely providing significant conservation benefits for less well-known sagebrush songbirds and other sagebrush-associated wildlife. 相似文献

Fire is an important natural disturbance in the Mediterranean-climate coastal shrublands of southern California. However,
anthropogenic ignitions have increased fire frequency to the point that it threatens the persistence of some shrub species
and favors the expansion of exotic annual grasses. Because human settlement is a primary driver of increased ignitions, we
integrated a landscape model of disturbance and succession (LANDIS) with an urban growth model (UGM) to simulate the combined
effects of urban development and high fire frequency on the distribution of coastal shrublands. We tested whether urban development
would contribute to an expansion of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) and/or change in average fire return intervals and
compared the relative impacts of direct habitat loss and altered fire regimes on functional vegetation types. We also evaluated
two methods of integrating the simulation models. The development pattern predicted by the UGM was predominantly aggregated,
which minimized the expansion of the WUI and increase in fire frequency, suggesting that fire risk may be higher at intermediate
levels of urbanization due to the spatial arrangement of ignition sources and fuel. The comparison of model coupling methods
illustrated how cumulative effects of repeated fires may occur gradually as urban development expands across the landscape.
Coastal sage scrub species and resprouting chaparral were more susceptible to direct habitat loss, but increased fire frequency
was more of a concern to obligate seeder species that germinate from a persistent seed bank. Simulating different scenarios
of fire frequency and urban growth within one modeling framework can help managers locate areas of highest risk and determine
which vegetation types are most vulnerable to direct habitat loss, altered fire regimes, or both. 相似文献
