Rangeland management strategies impact biodiversity, the quality and quantity of ecosystem services, and overall rangeland resiliency. Previous management strategies, coupled with climate change, have led to widespread invasion by Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis; bluegrass) in the Northern Great Plains, United States. Bluegrass invasions are expected to have detrimental impacts on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provided by rangelands. Yet none have investigated how bluegrass invasions influence pollinator populations, which are a prominent conservation concern and provide ecosystem services. We measured the impact of bluegrass invasion on mixed-grass prairie forb and butterfly communities. Obligate grassland butterflies, those that rely on grasslands, decreased as bluegrass cover increased, including the threatened Hesperia dacotae. Conversely, the abundance of facultative grassland butterflies, those found in grasslands but not fully dependent on them for their life history, increased as bluegrass increased. Moreover, plant species diversity and flowering forb species richness decreased as bluegrass cover increased. Overall, bluegrass invasion led to butterfly and plant community simplification, signaling a loss of biodiversity and potentially ecosystem services. Our research is the first to quantify how grassland butterflies and the floral resources they depend on are negatively impacted by bluegrass invasion. Resource managers should adopt management strategies that reduce bluegrass cover and improve nectar and host resources for obligate grassland butterflies. Management choices that removed disturbance regimes inherent to the Northern Great Plains (i.e., fire and grazing) led to bluegrass dominance in the region. Plague is a zoonotic disease (transmitted mainly by fleas and maintained in nature by rodents) that causes severe acute illness in humans. We present a human plague case who became infected by the bite of a wild Gunnison's prairie dog, and a good practical example of the One Health approach that resulted in a rapid public health response. The exposure occurred while the animal was being transported for relocation to a wildlife refuge after being trapped in a plague enzootic area. This is the first report of a human plague case resulting from the bite of a Gunnison's prairie dog. Additionally, we present an observation of a longer incubation period for plague in captive prairie dogs, leading to a recommendation for a longer quarantine period for prairie dogs during translocation efforts. 相似文献

Spatial scale is inherent in the definition of landscape heterogeneity and diversity. For example, a landscape may appear heterogeneous at one scale but quite homogeneous at another scale. In assessing the impact of burning and grazing on the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area (a tallgrass prairie), spatial scale is extremely important. Textural contrast algorithms were applied to various scales of remote sensing data and related to landscape units for assessment of heterogeneity under a variety of burning treatments. Acquired data sets included Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS), with 80 m resolution, Landsat thematic mapper (TM), with 30 m resolution, and high resolution density sliced aerial photography (with a 5 m resolution). Results suggest that heterogeneous areas of dense patchiness (e.g., unburned areas) must be analyzed at a finer scale than more homogeneous areas which are burned at least every four years. 相似文献

Previous research has suggested that ducks and songbirds may benefit from prairie landscapes that consist primarily of contiguous
grasslands. However, the relative importance of landscape-level vs. local characteristics on mechanisms underlying observed
patterns is unclear. We measured effects of grassland amount and fragmentation on upland and wetland songbird and duck density
and nest success, and on some nest predators, across 16 landscapes in southern Alberta, Canada. We compared these landscape-level
effects with local-scale responses, including distance to various edges and vegetation characteristics. We also evaluated
several statistical approaches to comparing effects of habitat characteristics at multiple spatial scales. Few species were
influenced by grassland amount or fragmentation. In contrast, distance to edge and local vegetation characteristics had significant
effects on densities and nest success of many species. Previous studies that reported effects of landscape characteristics
may have detected patterns driven by local mechanisms. As a corollary, results were very sensitive to statistical model structure;
landscape level effects were much less apparent when local characteristics were included in the models. 相似文献

Black carbon (BC) or charcoal is thought to represent an important component of the carbon cycle, but has seldom been quantified in soils. We quantified soil BC in a temperate mixed-grass savanna in the southern Great Plains using benzenecarboxylic acids as molecular markers for BC. Soils were collected from four fire treatments (repeated summer fires in 1992 and 1994; repeated winter fires in 1991, 1993 and 1995; alternate-season fires in winter 1991, summer 1992, and winter 1994; and unburned control) at 0-10 and 10-20 cm depth in 1996. Black carbon concentrations ranged from 50 to 130 g BC kg−1 of soil organic carbon (SOC), or from 0.55 to 1.07 g BC kg−1 of whole soil in this mixed grass savanna. The BC contribution to SOC increased significantly with soil depth (P<0.05). Repeated fires increased BC slightly compared to the unburned controls; however, the effects of repeated fires on BC were not statistically significant in this mixed-grass savanna. Results of this study provide estimates of BC concentrations for native, uncultivated mixed-grass savanna, and indicate that 2-3 fires have little effect on the size of the soil BC pool in this region. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential for using arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) root colonization and pasture reflectance characteristics as indicators of changes in tallgrass prairie vegetation resulting from differences in grazing history. The experiment was conducted within the context of a separate long‐term experiment in which eight 4·9‐ha pastures were grazed by either bison or cattle for nine consecutive years. Two separate ungrazed pastures were selected for comparison with grazed areas on the basis of similarity in burning regime, vegetation, soil and topographic characteristics. Four 45 m‐long transects were located in the upland sites within each pasture, and four plots were clipped to ground level along each transect. Reflectance readings were taken with a hand‐held radiometer at each sampling location and a soil core was collected within each plot for analysis of AMF root colonization. Reflectance readings at sixteen different wavelengths were used directly as inputs during multiple regression development or were transformed into each of three vegetation indices (normalized difference vegetation index, soil‐adjusted vegetation index and wide‐dynamic‐range vegetation index) and used in simple linear regressions. Ungrazed pastures were characterized by higher (P < 0·01) grass biomass, total biomass and canopy height than grazed pastures, but had a lower proportional abundance of forbs (P < 0·01) and amounts of forb biomass (P = 0·04). Species of herbivore did not significantly influence above‐ground characteristics that were measured. In general, AMF root colonization was relatively small and was not significantly affected by treatment and, accordingly, the variation was insufficient to test its potential as an indicator of grazing effects on vegetation or its potential relationship with pasture reflectance. Multiple regression equations based on individual wavelength reflectance values explained significantly more of the variation in above‐ground vegetation characteristics than did simple regressions using vegetation indices as predictor variables (r2 values from 0·36 to 0·46 vs. 0·11 to 0·27) and have the potential to predict above‐ground vegetation characteristics in heterogeneous rangelands. 相似文献

Total extract from the fruit of Szechuan pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum DC), the volatile components of the extract and a non‐volatile fraction containing alkylamides (NVA fraction) are feeding deterrents for rats. The present study investigated the effectiveness of these natural repellents in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster Wagner). Two‐choice feeding trials were conducted during which food‐deprived voles were offered choices between oat‐bran wafers. In Experiment 1, 10 voles were given three sets of feeding trials, each 2 h long. Baseline consumption was established during the first set of two trials by offering a choice between two oat‐bran wafers dipped in ethanol, the control solvent. During the second set of two trials the voles were given a choice between an oat‐bran wafer dipped in ethanol and a wafer dipped in Zanthoxylum extract. During the third set the voles were given a choice between a wafer served on top of a screened dish containing a sample of ethanol and a wafer served on top of a dish containing a sample of extract. In this manner the voles were exposed to volatile compounds emanating from the extract but could not contact it. Wafers dipped in extract were almost completely avoided. The volatile components of extract also significantly reduced food intake. In Experiment 2, habituation to the volatile constituents of extract was examined in 16 Zanthoxylum‐naïve voles. Baseline consumption was established by offering two wafers served on top of screened dishes containing ethanol. This was followed by twelve tests during which a choice between a wafer served above a sample of ethanol and a wafer served above a sample of extract was given. The voles failed to habituate to the volatile components of extract, consistently consuming less of the wafers served above extract. In Experiment 3 a dose‐response curve to Zanthoxylum extract was established, using 12 stimulus‐naïve voles. After baseline consumption was established, the animals were given two tests each, presenting a choice between a control wafer and a wafer dipped in a dilution of extract (0.001–100 g liter?1). Only concentrations of 10 and 100 g liter?1 reduced food intake. In Experiment 4 the effects of the non‐volatile fraction of extract were compared to those of whole extract. Vegetable oil was used as solvent. Eight stimulus‐naïve voles were given two tests with a choice between an oil‐dipped and an extract‐dipped wafer. A second group of eight voles received two tests with a choice between an oil‐dipped and NVA‐dipped wafer. Extract‐dipped wafers were avoided, but the NVA fraction had no effect on food consumption.
