Bilateral traumatic optic nerve avulsion in a Thoroughbred gelding

This report describes an unusual case of acute blindness following traumatic head injury in a mature horse. The horse fell over backwards and subsequently presented with bilateral blindness and epistaxis. Vision did not return following medical supportive therapy and euthanasia was elected. Post mortem findings revealed a basisphenoid fracture and bilateral optic nerve avulsion rostral to the optic chiasm, an uncommon presentation of traumatic blindness not previously reported in the horse.     

A spontaneous thymic carcinosarcoma in a young Sprague Dawley rat

We encountered a case of spontaneous thymic carcinosarcoma in a young Crl:CD (Sprague Dawley) rat. Grossly, a white multinodular mass replaced the thymus in the thoracic cavity. Histologically, multiple nodules were separated by fibrous stroma, and each nodule included isolated regions that were composed of epithelial or non-epithelial tumor cells. The epithelial tumor cells were relatively large and round to polygonal cells with large nuclei and weakly eosinophilic cytoplasm. These cells were cytokeratin-positive and vimentin-negative. These cells infiltrated the lungs. The non-epithelial tumor cells were poorly differentiated, small, round to spindle-shaped cells with small nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm. These cells were vimentin-positive and mostly cytokeratin-negative. Many islands of cartilage were observed near non-epithelial cells. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a primary thymic carcinosarcoma consisting of a malignant thymoma composed of epithelial tumor cells and a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma composed of non-epithelial tumor cells.     

塔河油田集输管道内FeS的形成及自燃风险

塔河油田集输管道输送介质具有高含H,s、高含CO,及高含氯离子的特点,在无氧且低流速环境下,易生成FeS等腐蚀产物,FeS具有自燃性,一旦发生自燃将会引发火灾和爆炸事故。采用X-射线衍射测试方法对腐蚀产物组分进行分析,在H2S、CO2共存体系下,腐蚀产物以FeCO3、FeO（OH）、Fe3O4为主,铁的硫化物以FeS为主,但含量较低。采用加热的方式,利用固体自燃点测试仪对不同组分的7个腐蚀产物混合物进行自燃特性分析,结果表明：FeCO。可以表现出一定放热,但不会发生自燃;对于FeCO3与FeS形成的混合物,当两者质量比为15：10、单质硫磺的质量分数为2．67％时,FeCO。和FeS混合物自燃点为189．08℃,易发生自燃,建议在现场断管作业中采取预防FeS自燃的措施。（图2,表2,参6）。     

不同时期喷施麦巨金对小麦抗倒性及产量的影响

于2013年4月在通辽农科院试验基地,以麦巨金为材料,研究不同喷施时期对春小麦茎秆基部形态特征、抗折力和倒伏系数及产量的影响。结果表明:于拔节期、孕穗期、灌浆期分别喷施麦巨金可明显降低株高、缩短基部节间长度,显著提高茎秆抗折力,增强其抗倒伏能力,并提高单位面积产量。     

龙眼茎冻害组织自然修复的解剖学研究

龙眼茎受冻害后，细胞组织受害症状由轻至重逐渐发展，维管形成层区受害最为严重，大部分细胞收缩变形及至破裂解体，使木质部与韧皮部分离。气温回升后，形成层受冻害已褐变但尚未干枯的茎，可从受伤的形成层区产生愈伤组织继而从愈伤组织产生新的维管形成层，使茎重新恢复生长。     

Coronoidectomy as a treatment for mandibular immobility caused by fracture of the coronoid process in three horses

This report describes the history, clinical signs and treatment of three horses suffering from deviation and immobility of the mandible resulting from fracture of a coronoid process of the mandible. Deviation and immobility resulted from impingement of a callus between the temporal bone and zygomatic arch. Fracture of the coronoid process was identified by using radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography or a combination of two or more of these imaging modalities. Osteoarthritis of the ipsilateral temporomandibular joint of two horses was identified. All horses were treated by excising the fractured coronoid process, and two were also treated by excising the diseased ipsilateral mandibular condyle. All horses were able to open their mouth more widely immediately after surgery. One horse experienced moderate post-operative haemorrhage, and all had severe shear mouth. Shear mouth was ameliorated gradually over many months by rasping dental overgrowths. Mandibular movement of all horses improved, allowing efficient mastication of feed. One horse was able to be used as a showjumper, one horse was sold at Thoroughbred yearling sales and was lost to follow-up, and one horse died from an unrelated gastrointestinal disease 10 months after mandibular coronoidectomy and condylectomy.     

Spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the neck skeletal muscle of a Crlj:CD1 (ICR) mouse

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is extremely rare in humans and animals, especially in rodents. This is the first case report on spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the neck skeletal muscle of a Crlj:CD1 (ICR) mouse (36 weeks, dead). Necropsy revealed a solid white mass located in the neck skeletal muscle (scalenus muscle). Histological examination showed that the tumor consisted of atypical polygonal cells, a small osteoid clump, and bone tissue. Mitotic figures were observed. Serial sections showed that neoplastic cells lacked clear invasive proliferation to adjacent normal skeletal muscle and continuity with normal bone tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the neoplastic cells were positive for osteocalcin, osterix, vimentin, and S-100. Based on these results, the tumor was diagnosed as extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the neck skeletal muscle.
