Although the importance of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in health and disease and its critical role in cellular bioenergetics have been well established in various species, there is a total lack of information on the role of CoQ10 in horses. Therefore, the present study was undertaken first to ascertain the occurrence of CoQ10 and/or possibly other homologs of coenzyme Q (CoQ) in horse serum, and then to examine the response to CoQ10 supplementation on serum CoQ10 concentration. The study was carried out with 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses. Total CoQ (reduced and oxidized forms) in serum was assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The data show that horse serum contains CoQ as CoQ10, at a much lower concentration as compared with that of humans and several other species. There is no evidence for the presence of coenzyme Q9 or other homologs of CoQ. On supplementation with CoQ10 at 800 mg a day (1.47 mg/kg body weight), there was a significant increase in serum CoQ10 concentration, approximately 2.7-fold at 60 days. CoQ10 supplementation at this dosage was found to be safe and well tolerated. Additional studies are needed to examine whether maintaining higher serum CoQ10 concentrations is of potential health benefit to the horses, as assessed by selected biochemical markers and also in terms of performance.  相似文献

Both physical activity and stress result in an increase in plasma cortisol level. The measurement of cortisol in plasma requires taking blood samples, which is stressful itself. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of saliva sampling for the determination of cortisol concentrations, indicating the intensity of exercise in horses during race training. Twelve Thoroughbred horses aged 2-3 years were examined during their speed training sessions. The horses galloped on the 1,200-m sand track at a speed of 14.4-15.3 m/s. Three saliva samples and three blood samples were collected from each horse. Both types of samples were taken when the horse was at rest, immediately after returning from the track and 30 minutes after the end of exercise. Blood lactic acid (LA) concentration was determined using the enzymatic cuvette test. The concentrations of cortisol in saliva and plasma samples were measured by enzyme immunoassay methods. Statistically significant correlations were found between salivary cortisol level determined 30 minutes after the end of exercise and blood LA concentration obtained immediately after exercise (P = .003) and between salivary and plasma cortisol levels measured 30 minutes after the end of training session (P = .015). The measurement of cortisol concentration in saliva samples taken from race horses 30 minutes after the end of exercise can be recommended for use in practice under field conditions to estimate the level of relative intensity of exercise in race horses.  相似文献

Many Chinese herbs and herbal mixtures are fed to domestic animals for their reputed medicinal properties. These herbs could contribute to the intake of essential nutrients and toxic metals, but their composition is mostly unknown. The purpose of this study was to measure major nutrient (crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate, fibre) and mineral (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Mo, S, Al, Cd, Ni, Pb) concentrations in samples of fourteen combination formulas labelled for veterinary use and commonly administered to horses and dogs. Three single herbs, Bupleurum chinense, Curcuma zedoaria and Astragalus membranaceus, each obtained from several sources, and Yunnan Baiyao, a proprietary hemostatic mixture, were also analysed. Proximate analyses and some mineral concentrations differed (p < 0.05) among single herbs, and high concentrations of several minerals were detected in some herbal combinations. Those containing the highest concentrations [g/kg dry matter (DM)] of calcium (92.4), iron (2.6) and manganese (0.28) could provide >38%, 142% and 96%, respectively, of recommended allowances in adult dogs, and >13%, 122% and 2%, respectively, of maintenance requirements in horses, at the maximum labelled dose assuming complete availability. Concentrations of cadmium, nickel and lead were below published oral tolerance levels. Aluminium concentrations (median 380, maximum 920 mg/kg DM) were higher than has been previously reported in Chinese herbs. These nutrient analyses suggest that herbal combinations marketed to veterinarians, when fed at the maximal labelled dose, are unlikely to produce clinically relevant changes in the dietary intake of essential nutrients. However, small amounts of non‐essential contaminant minerals are present in some formulas, and further research is necessary to understand the significance of this finding.  相似文献

Evaluation of a new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay, the PATHFAST assay system (PATHFAST), for measurement of circulating progesterone in mares was performed. Five mares at the mid-luteal stage were administrated a single i.m. injection of prostaglandin F2α analog (PGF2α; cloprostenol 250 μg/ml), and then blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at 0, 15, 30 and 45 min, at one-hour intervals until 24 and at 48 hr via a catheter in the jugular vein. To monitor the physiological changes in circulating progesterone in mares after induced luteolysis, concentrations of progesterone in whole blood and serum samples were measured by PATHFAST. In addition, concentrations of progesterone in serum samples measured by PATHFAST were compared with those measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Using PATHFAST, the serum concentrations of progesterone in mares correlated highly with those of whole blood samples (r=0.9672, n=88). The serum concentrations of progesterone as measured by PATHFAST correlated well with RIA (r=0.9654, n=88) and EIA (r=0.9323, n=112). An abrupt decline in circulating progesterone in whole blood samples was observed within 2 hr (50%), followed by a gradual decline until 48 hr later. The results for progesterone in whole blood samples correlated highly with those in serum samples, and the declining pattern paralleled that of the serum samples. These results demonstrated that PATHFAST is useful in the equine clinic as an accurate diagnostic tool for rapid assay of progesterone within 26 min, using unextracted whole blood.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study whether hemodynamic function in horses, particularly mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), is better maintained with sevoflurane than isoflurane, thus requiring less pharmacological support. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized clinical investigation. Animals Thirty-nine racehorses undergoing arthroscopy in lateral recumbency. METHODS: Horses were assigned to receive either isoflurane (n = 20) or sevoflurane (n = 19) at 0.9-1.0 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) for maintenance of anesthesia. Besides routine clinical monitoring, cardiac output (CO) was measured by lithium dilution. Hemodynamic support was prescribed as follows: when MAP decreased to <70 mmHg, patients were to receive infusion of 0.1% dobutamine, which was to be discontinued at MAP >85 mmHg or heart rate >60 beats minute(-1). Statistical analysis of results, given as mean +/- SD, included a clustered regression approach. RESULTS: Average inhalant anesthetic time [91 +/- 35 (isoflurane group) versus 97 +/- 26 minutes (sevoflurane group)] and dose (in MAC multiples), volume of crystalloid solution infused, and cardiopulmonary parameters including CO were similar in the two groups, except heart rate was 8% higher in isoflurane than sevoflurane horses (p < 0.05). To maintain MAP >70 mmHg, isoflurane horses received dobutamine over a significantly longer period (55 +/- 26 versus 28 +/- 21% of total anesthetic time, p < 0.01) and at a 51% higher dose than sevoflurane horses (41 +/- 19 versus 27 +/- 23 microg kg(-1) MAC hour(-1); p = 0.058), with 14/20 isoflurane animals and only 9/19 sevoflurane horses being infused with dobutamine at >30 microg kg(-1) MAC hour(-1) (p < 0.05). Dobutamine infusion rates were consistently lower in the sevoflurane as compared to the isoflurane group, with differences reaching significance level during the 0-30 minutes (p < 0.01) and 61-90 minutes periods (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Horses under sevoflurane anesthesia may require less pharmacological support in the form of dobutamine than isoflurane-anesthetized horses. This could be due to less suppression of vasomotor tone.  相似文献

为了解阿哈尔捷金马经长途运输后血液生理生化反应的情况,试验选用23匹阿哈尔捷金马(公马14匹、母马9匹,年龄2~6岁),从俄罗斯出发经长途公路运输5 d到达新疆阿拉山口,在到达目的地后第7和35天,分别进行颈静脉采血,测定生理生化指标及应激相关激素水平,同时采用异地对照法与未经运输的15匹本地阿哈尔捷金马(公马10匹、母马5匹,年龄6~10岁)进行比较研究。结果发现:与本地阿哈尔捷金马相比,经长途运输后第7、35天的阿哈尔捷金马血液中性粒细胞(Gran)数量及占比、红细胞压积(HCT)、血小板(PLT)数量、碱性磷酸酶(ALKP)活性均有提高(P<0.05;P<0.01),而中间细胞(Mid)数量和百分比、血糖(GLU)水平显著或极显著降低(P<0.05;P<0.01);运输后第35天,平均红细胞体积(MCV)、磷(PHOS)、总蛋白(TP)含量均有所提高(P<0.01;P<0.01),淋巴细胞(LY)百分比则显著降低(P<0.05);运输后第7天抗利尿激素(ADH)、生长激素(GH)、尿素氮(UREA)及胰岛素(INS)含量均有下降(P<0.05;P<0.01),总胆红素(TBIL)、三碘甲状腺原氨酸(T3)水平均显著提高(P<0.05),但这些激素水平在运输后第35天均与对照组无显著差异(P>0.05)。综合以上结果,阿哈尔捷金马经长途运输后,出现了相应的一过性应激反应特征,经过一定的调整期(35 d)后大部分指标和未经长途运输马趋于一致,在此期间尚不能立即进入正常使用状态,以免导致长期不可逆性病变。  相似文献

This paper analyzes changes in the length of coat on selected body areas in horses and ponies kept under different husbandry (stable) conditions during the winter‐spring period. The study included 12 Ma?polski geldings and 12 geldings of Felin ponies aged 10–15 years. Horses were kept in two stables (six horses and six ponies in each stable). The type of performance, husbandry conditions and feeding of the studied animals were comparable. As of December 1, samples of hair coat from the scapula, sternum, back and abdomen areas of both body sides were collected seven times. The lengths of 20 randomly selected hair fibers were measured. Daily measurements of air temperature in the stables were also taken. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed using the following factors: the body part from where the coat was sampled, the subsequent examination and the stable as well as the interaction between these factors. The significance of differences between means was determined with a t‐Tukey test. The relations between air temperature in the stable and hair length were calculated using Pearson's correlation. It was found that air temperature in the stable impacts the length of winter coat in horses and ponies. The effect of this factor is more pronounced in ponies; as in the stables with lower temperatures it produces a longer hair coat which is more evenly distributed over the body in comparison with horses. Keeping horses and ponies in stables with a low air temperature accelerates coat shedding by approximately 25 days. Coat shedding begins from the scapula area.  相似文献
