Objective To determine the effect of treating naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode and paramphistome infections on milk production in dairy cattle.
Design A field trial.
Animals One thousand two hundred and thirty nine dairy cows.
Procedure Cows were either not treated or treated with 4.5 mg/kg oxfendazole, 16.6 mg/kg oxyclozanide or 4.5 mg/kg oxfendazole and 16.6 mg/kg oxyclozanide in March, May and August.
Results A significant increase in milk production, averaging 0.4 L (SE 0.2) per day, was seen when dairy cows infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and paramphistomes were treated with oxfendazole or oxfendazole and oxyclozanide in March, May and August. Cows treated with oxyclozanide alone at these times produced no more milk than untreated cows.
Faecal egg counts confirmed that oxyclozanide treatment reduced paramphistome populations and oxfendazole treatment reduced nematode populations in cows over the 7-month monitoring period.
Conclusion When dairy cows infested with gastrointestinal nematodes and paramphistomes were treated with oxfendazole alone or oxfendazole and oxyclozanide in March, May and August milk production increased. 相似文献

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of a formulation containing moxidectin and 6 in 1 vaccine in sheep under field conditions.
Design: Efficacy and safety study.
Animals: Two hundred and five crossbred Merino lambs and two hundred and eight Merino ewes were used in the studies.
Procedure: A formulation was made for the simultaneous treatment of sheep with moxidectin and immunisation against clostridial diseases and caseous lymphadenitis. The efficacy against nematodes, vaccine response and safety were assessed.
Results: Effective control of nematodes and responses to antigens were achieved following subcutaneous administration. The formulation was safe to administer; occasional minor tissue reactions were evident, but no other adverse effects of treatment were observed in either pregnant ewes or lambs, using either the recommended dose, or an overdose of the formulation.
Conclusion: Administration of a formulation containing moxidectin, five clostridial antigens and caseous lymphadenitis antigen proved safe and efficacious under field conditions. 相似文献

Two trials were conducted against natural and experimentally induced parasitic gastroenteritis in sheep and goats using an in-feed formulation of albendazole to evaluate its therapeutic and prophylactic efficacy. In the first trial, albendazole was incorporated in feed pellets to deliver an average daily dose of 0.7 mg/kg body weight in order to evaluate its prophylactic efficacy. In the second trial, feed pellets were offered to deliver an average total dose of 8.0 mg/kg body weight in two equal split doses in order to evaluate its curative efficacy.Sustained plasma concentrations of the active compound, albendazole sulphoxide, and its metabolite albendazole sulphone, sufficient to prevent establishment of infection, were achieved when the animals were allowed to feed on medicated pellets for 10 consecutive days. The bioavailability of the metabolites of albendazole following the administration of a therapeutic dose in two split doses of the in-feed formulation was sufficient to remove established adult nematodes. The concentrate feed pellets could be used for self-medicating small ruminants for therapeutic use as well as for prophylaxis based on their strategic use appropriate to the epidemiology of the parasitic disease. 相似文献

Infections of the gastrointestinal tract with parasitic nematodes, and particularly Haemonchus contortus, represent one of the main pathological constraints on the breeding of small ruminants in tropical countries. Owing to the constant development of anthelmintic resistance in worm populations, alternative control methods are being evaluated, including an assessment of the value of the traditional plants. The effect of the consumption of Fagara leaves on sheep infected with gastrointestinal nematodes was therefore measured both under controlled conditions and in a field survey. In sheep experimentally infected with 2500 third-stage larvae of H. contortus, a three-day administration of Fagara was associated with a decrease in egg excretion and a significant reduction in the fertility of female worms, without changes in the worm number. A reduction in egg output was also confirmed from the results obtained of a survey or naturally infected sheep performed in smallholder farms. This survey also indicated that the repeated consumption of small amounts of Fagara leaves was more effective than a single three-day administration. Results of both studies suggest that Fagara leaves might be an alternative option to chemotherapy to modulate the epidemiology of H. contortus in tropical countries. 相似文献

Multiple resistance to albendazole, thiophanate, levamisole and orally administered ivermectin was detected in an isolate of Haemonchus contortus in sheep on a farm where benzimidazole resistance had already been identified. Following a faecal egg count reduction test, this was confirmed by both critical and controlled anthelmintic tests. Different groups of sheep infected naturally or given an experimental infection with the benzimidazole-resistant isolate were treated with the recommended doses of various anthelmintics. Compared to the control group, the percentage reductions in the faecal egg counts of sheep treated with albendazole, thiophanate, levamisole and ivermectin varied between 38.2% and 79.1% and the residual worm counts between 27.3% and 57.5%. The results indicate the presence of multiple anthelmintic resistance in this isolate of H. contortus. Sheep treated with closantel showed 100% reductions in faecal egg and worm counts, indicating that this drug was very effective against the population of H. contortus on the farm. 相似文献

The effects of a controlled-release albendazole capsule (Profitril-Captec) on parasitism in grazing Corriedale ewes in the Nyandarua district of Kenya. Veterinary Research Communications, 21 (2), 85-99The effects of intraruminal sustained-release capsules (IRSRCs) on parasitism in grazing Corriedale ewes were investigated over a period of 119 days (4 June-30 September 1993) using 40 ewes aged approximately 2 years and randomly divided into two groups of 20 ewes each. Each of the ewes in the treatment group received an IRSRC while the controls were left untreated. The groups were placed on adjacent 2.5-acre paddocks obtained by subdividing a 5.0-acre permanent pasture which had previously been grazed by young untreated sheep, so exposing both groups of ewes to a similar challenge from a contaminated paddock. The faecal egg counts, herbage larval counts and worm burdens of the major gastrointestinal parasites of sheep were significantly reduced by the use of the IRSRC. These parasitological effects were reflected in the increased live weight gains and heavier fleeces of the IRSRC-treated ewes. The control ewes required occasional salvage treatments during the trial period and the herbage on their paddock was heavily contaminated with infected larvae, reflected in the high worm burdens in the control ewes necropsied at the end of the trial and in tracer sheep introduced into the paddocks during the initial (day 30), interim (day 58) and final (day 89) stages of the experiment. Most capsules were exhausted within 95 days of administration, leading to a rise in the count of eggs per gram in the faeces in the treated group towards the end of the study. 相似文献

In the spring of 2006, 60 naturally infected hens obtained from a broiler-breeder farm in northwest Arkansas were used in a controlled titration study to determine the anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole in the treatment of both nematode and cestode infections. Albendazole was used at the dose rates of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 mg/kg of BW, with all treatments given individually as an oral suspension on d 0 (split doses) and with necropsies for parasite collection conducted on d 7. There were 15 birds per treatment group. Statistically significant (P < 0.05) reductions in worm burdens from control levels were seen at the 5.0 mg/kg dose level for adult and larval stages of Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum, and Capillaria obsignata. A significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the numbers of Raillietina cesticillus (scolexes) from control group levels was seen only at the 20.0 mg/kg rate of treatment. For albendazole given at the rates of 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 mg/kg, respective anthelmintic efficacies based on geometric means were 87.7, 91.2, and 98.2% (A. galli larvae); 100.0, 100.0, and 100.0% (A. galli adults); 96.9, 95.7, and 98.9% (H. gallinarum larvae); 92.7, 95.4, and 94.9% (H. gallinarum adults); 90.3, 91.3, and 95.1% (C. obsignata larvae and adults combined); and 73.1, 73.1, and 96.2% (R. cesticillus). No adverse reactions to albendazole were observed in this study. 相似文献
