The particle size of cereal grains has been found to modulate the rate of passage from the rumen and the digestibility of starch and neutral detergent fibre (NDF), but few studies have examined its impact on reticular pH. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding finely ground maize on the risk of ruminal acidosis, milk yield and composition. Twelve Holstein‐Friesian cows were assigned to one of two experimental groups and fed according to a cross‐over design. Diets were isoenergetic and isonitrogenous and were characterised by the same NDF and ADF, differing only in maize particle size. In the control diet (Ct), the maize meal was ground to 1.0 mm, whereas in the experimental diet, it was finely ground (Fg) to 0.5 mm. The pH and temperature of the reticulum were continuously measured in eight cows throughout the trial using indwelling sensors. Dry matter intake was higher in cows offered Fg diet than in Ct (19.0 vs. 20.3 kg/day; p = 0.067). However, milk yield (p = 0.855) and the 3.5% fat‐corrected milk (FCM) (p = 0.724) did not show any differences between the diets. Casein (2.48 vs. 2.57%; p = 0.035) and crude protein (CP) (3.18 vs. 3.31%; p = 0.021) resulted higher in Fg. Similarly, starch digestibility increased in animals offered Fg diet versus Ct (0.94 vs. 0.98; p = 0.078). Among the reticular parameters, the Fg‐fed cows spent a significantly higher time below the 5.5 pH threshold (15 vs. 61 min/day; p = 0.047) and had an average daily variation in reticular pH characterised by a lower nadir pH (5.95 vs. 5.72; p < 0.001) and a higher pH range (0.79 vs. 0.94; p = 0.003). In this study, grain particle size affected the risk of the onset of ruminal acidosis. Therefore, it should be carefully considered when formulating rations. 相似文献

旨在探究一株酿酒酵母和两株瘤胃源褶皱假丝酵母对亚急性瘤胃酸中毒(subacute ruminal acidosis,SARA)绵羊的缓解作用及其机制,为研制防治SARA微生态制剂提供优良菌株和理论依据。选取60只2月龄同期断奶的杜泊羊(♂)×湖羊(♀)F1代作为试验动物。通过逐步递增饲粮精粗比成功诱导40只绵羊发生SARA,将SARA绵羊随机分为4组,每组10只,分别为:SARA组、酿酒酵母组(Saccharomyces cerevisiae,SC)、褶皱假丝酵母一组(Diutina rugosa 1,DR1)、褶皱假丝酵母二组(Diutina rugosa 2,DR2),各组均饲喂精粗比为90∶10的日粮,酵母组于每天晨饲后分别灌服100 mL酿酒酵母ACCC 21162、褶皱假丝酵母N09、褶皱假丝酵母N07。对照组(Control,CON)饲喂50∶50饲粮。分别于第1、3、7、10天测定各组瘤胃液pH,第10天测定瘤胃与血液异常代谢产物、血气指标、瘤胃菌群。结果显示:1)灌服酵母组第3天后瘤胃液pH显著高于SARA组(P<0.05),灌服酵母可使SARA得有效缓解。2)瘤胃菌群相对丰度发生变化,SC组最优菌属为乳杆菌属,CON组最优菌属为普雷沃氏菌科未确定菌属,SARA、DR1、DR2组最优菌属为瘤胃菌科未确定属;灌服酵母组中,SC组丰富度指数最高,DR2组多样性指数最高。3)灌服酵母组瘤胃液和血液乳酸、瘤胃液组胺显著低于SARA组(P<0.05)。4)SC、DR2组血液pH、全血碱剩余极显著高于SARA组(P<0.01),灌服酵母组血液二氧化碳分压、二氧化碳总量、实际碳酸氢盐显著高于SARA组(P<0.05)。5)瘤胃液pH与血液实际碳酸氢盐呈现显著正相关(P<0.05),瘤胃液乳酸与瘤胃菌群Chao 1指标呈现显著负相关(P<0.05)。结果提示,3株酵母均可提升瘤胃菌群丰富度、降低瘤胃液和血液乳酸、减轻瘤胃炎症、缓解机体酸中毒。 相似文献

Three groups of 9 months old lambs, each group consisting of 5 animals, were infected experimentally with Eperythrozoon ovis (Eo), Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and Eo/Lm, respectively. The animals infected with Eo developed haemolytic anaemia, but otherwise no clinical symptoms were seen. The animals infected with Lm had a period with fever and reduced appetite after infection. These symptoms lasted longer and were more pronounced in the group with the dual infection (Eo/Lm). None of the lambs developed clinical meningo-encephalitis during the experiment.Group Lm developed the highest reciprocal geometrical mean titres against Lm. No titer rise was found in group Eo, while group Eo/Lm had a slight rise towards the end of the experiment. Group Eo/Lm also had the strongest delayed hypersensitivity reaction against Lm.After Eo infection, a fall in packed cell volume, haemoglobin, number of red cells, and plasma glucose and an increase in serum iron were recorded. Serum iron dropped and serum copper increased after infection with Lm.In this experiment the blood changes induced by Eo, i.e. haemolytic anaemia and acidosis, led to a prolonged state of illness in animals infected with Lm, in addition to inhibited development of antibody titres, but not to clinical meningoencephalitis. 相似文献

Acid-base abnormalities frequently are present in sick dogs. The mechanism for an acid-base disturbance can be determined with the simplified strong ion approach, which requires accurate values for the total concentration of plasma nonvolatile buffers (A(tot)) and the effective dissociation constant for plasma weak acids (K(a)). The aims of this study were to experimentally determine A(tot) and K(a) values for canine plasma. Plasma was harvested from 10 healthy dogs; the concentrations of quantitatively important strong ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, L-lactate) and nonvolatile buffer ions (total protein, albumin, phosphate) were determined; and the plasma was tonometered with CO2 at 37 degrees C. Strong ion difference (SID) was calculated from the measured strong ion concentrations, and nonlinear regression was used to estimate values for A(tot) and K(a), which were validated with data from an in vitro and in vivo study. Mean (+/- SD) values for canine plasma were A(tot) = (17.4 +/- 8.6) mM (equivalent to 0.273 mmol/g of total protein or 0.469 mmol/g of albumin); K(a) = (0.17 +/- 0.11) x 10(-7); pK(a) = 7.77. The calculated SID for normal canine plasma (pH = 7.40; P(CO2) = 37 mm Hg; [total protein] = 64 g/L) was 27 mEq/L. The net protein charge for normal canine plasma was 0.25 mEq/g of total protein or 0.42 mEq/g of albumin. Application of the experimentally determined values for A(tot), K(a), and net protein charge should improve understanding of the mechanism for complex acid-base disturbances in dogs. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The clinical efficacy of IV administered hypertonic saline solution and hypertonic bicarbonate solution (HBS) in the treatment of inappetent diarrheic calves has not been compared yet. HYPOTHESIS: HBS is more advantageous than hypertonic saline in the treatment of calves with severe metabolic acidosis. ANIMALS: Twenty-eight dehydrated, inappetent calves with neonatal diarrhea. METHODS: In 2 consecutive clinical studies, calves were initially treated with saline (5.85%; 5 mL/kg body weight [BW] over 4 minutes; study I: N = 16) or bicarbonate solution (8.4%; 10 mL/kg BW over 8 minutes; study II: N = 12), respectively, followed by oral administration of 3 L isotonic electrolyte solution 5 minutes after injection. Clinical and laboratory variables were monitored for 72 hours. RESULTS: Treatment failed in 6 calves of study I and in 1 calf of study II as indicated by a deterioration of the general condition. All treatment failures had more severe metabolic acidosis compared with successfully treated calves before treatment. In the latter, rehydration was completed within 18 hours after injection; metabolic acidosis was corrected within 24 hours (study I) and 6 hours (study II) after injection. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Diarrheic calves with slight metabolic acidosis (base excess [BE] >-10 mM) can be treated successfully with hypertonic saline. HBS is appropriate in calves without respiratory problems with more severe metabolic acidosis (BE up to -20 mM). Intensive care of the calves is required to ensure a sufficient oral fluid intake after the initial IV treatment. 相似文献

Two lactating dairy cows fitted with a rumen cannula received successively diets containing 0%, 20%, 34% and again 0% of wheat on a dry matter basis. After 5, 10 and 11 days, ruminal pH was measured between 8:00 and 16:00 hours, and milk was analysed for fat content and fatty acid profile. Diets with 20% and 34% wheat induced a marginal and a severe subacute ruminal acidosis respectively. After 11 days, diets with wheat strongly reduced the milk yield and milk fat content, increased the proportions of C8:0 to C13:0 even- or odd-chain fatty acids, C18:2 n-6 and C18:3 n-3 fatty acids but decreased the proportions of C18:0 and cis-9 C18:1 fatty acids. Wheat also increased the proportions of trans-5 to trans-10 C18:1, the latter exhibiting a 10-fold increase with 34% of wheat compared with value during the initial 0% wheat period. There was also an increase of trans-10, cis-12 C18:2 fatty acid and a decrease of trans-11 to trans-16 C18:1 fatty acids. The evolution during adaptation or after return to a 0% wheat diet was rapid for pH but much slower for the fatty acid profile. The mean ruminal pH was closely related to milk fat content, the proportion of odd-chain fatty acids (linear relationship) and the ratio of trans-10 C18:1/trans-11 C18:1 (nonlinear relationship). Such changes in fatty acid profile suggested a possible use for non-invasive diagnosis of subacute ruminal acidosis. 相似文献

Evaluation of the radio‐transmission pH‐measurement system for monitoring the ruminal pH and subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) in cattle is described. This is done in order to reveal the possible application of this system for detection and pathophysiological research of SARA by continuous ruminal pH measurement. The possibility of using this system for assessment of the ruminal pH in SARA cattle, and the presence of negative correlation between the ruminal pH and ruminal temperature in heathy and SARA cattle were determined. In addition, the 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing analysis showed that the ruminal microbial community was simpler in SARA cattle, and the bacterial numbers in SARA cattle were lower than those in healthy hay‐fed cattle. Concentrate feeding might have reduced the diversity of the ruminal microbial community. Changes in the ruminal microbial community of SARA cattle might be related to the changes in ruminal pH followed by the decrease in the number of some bacteria. Continuous monitoring of the ruminal pH using the radio‐transmission pH‐measurement system would be applied for detection and prevention of SARA in the field and pathophysiological research of SARA, including ruminal zymology and bacteriology, which have been determined previously by sampling of the ruminal fluid and measuring of ruminal pH. 相似文献
