Summary The variance of heritability ratios are considered for cases where data from perennial genotypes are collected serially over time. A random effect model for randomised complete blocks at a single location is examined. Estimation of the variance of estimates of heritability is presented for three types of heritability definition.Estimators are applied to two characters in a Yorkshire Fog grass germplasm collection evaluated for two years at one site. The precision of such heritability estimates is discussed. Estimators for the multiple sites model are available also, from the author.  相似文献

Unknown compounds in crop plants are inhibitory to seed germination and early seedling growth of weed plants. A Petri dish assay showed that barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) extracts significantly reduced root growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus‐galli, Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi.) and eclipta (Eclipta prostrata L.). As the concentration of crop extracts increased, root growth of the test plants were significantly reduced. A high‐performance liquid chromatography analysis with nine standard phenolic compounds showed that the concentrations and compositions of allelopathic compounds depend on the extracted plant extracts. Caffeic acid, hydro‐cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, m‐coumaric acid, p‐coumaric acid and coumarin were present in all the crop plant species, and hydro‐cinnamic acid were detected as the highest amount. Coumarin at 10?3 m significantly inhibited root growth of alfalfa and barnyard grass more than that of eclipta. The research suggests that extracts of barley, oats, rice and wheat have an allelopathic effect on alfalfa, barnyard grass and eclipta and that the findings of bioassay were considerably correlated with the type and amount of causative allelochemicals, indicating that the allelopathic effects on three test plants were ranked in order of wheat (highest), barley, rice and oats (lowest). The results may have value in enabling weed control based on natural plant extracts or crop residues in the fields.  相似文献

Summary Correlation and path coefficients were calculated for seed yield per plant and its components from 36 clones comprising 8 parental and their 28 single cross clones in Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) from data pooled over two years. Seed yield per plant showed significant positive correlation coefficients with branch number per panicle, panicle number per plant, panicle length, branch length, 100 seed weight and day to flower. Path coefficients analysis revealed that panicle number per plant had highest direct effect on seed yield per plant, followed by branch number per panicle, days to flower and 100 seed weight.  相似文献

Summary Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients of total crude protein per plant (TCP) and digestible dry matter per plant (DDM) with dry matter yield per plant (DMY), tiller number, plant height, stem thickness and leaf-stem ratio, pooled over two years, revealed that TCP and DDM were correlated at both the phenotypic and genotypic levels with DMY, tiller number and plant height. But only DMY had high direct effects on TCP and DDM. Tiller number and plant height had only indirect effects on TCP and DDM via DMY. Thus, selection based on tiller number and plant height may not only improve dry matter yield per plant but also total crude protein per plant and digestible dry matter per plant. Further, screening of high TCP and high DDM clones among the high yielding clones would be a more remunerative approach to improve TCP and DDM in Guinea grass.  相似文献

Summary Several Lathyrus species and in particular Lathyrus sativus (grass pea) have great agronomic potential as grain and forage legume, especially in drought conditions. Grass pea is rightly considered as one of the most promising sources of calories and protein for the vast and expanding populations of drought-prone and marginal areas of Asia and Africa. It is virtually the only species that can yield high protein food and feed under these conditions. It is superior in yield, protein value, nitrogen fixation, and drought, flood and salinity tolerance than other legume crops. Lathyrus species have a considerable potential in crop rotation, improving soil physical conditions; reducing the amount of disease and weed populations, with the overall reduction of production costs. Grass pea was already in use in Neolithic times, and presently is considered as a model crop for sustainable agriculture. As a result of the little breeding effort invested in it compared to other legumes, grass pea cultivation has shown a regressive pattern in many areas in recent decades. This is due to variable yield caused by sensitivity to diseases and stress factors and above all, to the presence of the neurotoxin β-N-oxalyl-L-α,β-diaminopropionic acid (β-ODAP), increasing the danger of genetic erosion. However, both L. sativus and L. cicera are gaining interest as grain legume crops in Mediterranean-type environments and production is increasing in Ethiopia, China, Australia and several European countries. This paper reviews research work on Lathyrus breeding focusing mainly on biotic and abiotic resistance improvement, and lists current developments in biotechnologies to identify challenges for Lathyrus improvement in the future.  相似文献

Summary Resistance to the soil-borne pathogen Cephalosporium gramineum was evaluated in Agropyron elongatum, A. intermedium. A. intermedium var. trichophorum, an Agrotriticum, and eight species of Triticum. Only A. elongatum and A. intermedium showed high levels of resistance. Agrotriticum (56 chromosomes) was resistant too. High resistance to C. gramineum is available, but its utilization will probably require the use of chromosome substitution techniques to transfer the resistance into an agronomically useful wheat.  相似文献

Fifty grass pea land race populations of Ethiopia that were selected based on administrative regions and different altitude classes were used in this study to determine variability in morphological characters, Oxalyl Diamino Propanoic acid(ODAP) – a causative agent of lathyrism, and protein contents and their associations. Highly significant differences were observed among the populations for most of the morphological characters. Populations collected from Gondar region and the higher altitude group (>2550 m) showed the highest mean and coefficient of variation indicating the presence of high genetic diversity in this region and altitude group. ODAP analysis from single plants showed significant variation both within a population and between populations. Four individual plants with low ODAP contents ranging from 0.149% to 0.182% (range within safe level) were identified in populations collected from different regions, indicating the diversity and variation of this trait with in one population and between regions. These low ODAP lines are considered important for further breeding. The association of ODAP with grain yield, biomass, plant height and seed size was negative, suggesting that the selection of tall and late maturing varieties with large seed size and high grain yield potential will enable the development of varieties with low ODAP content. Spontaneous pneumothorax induced by grass awns accounts for 5% of spontaneous pneumothorax and 22.5% of thoracic grass awn cases. Previous studies report limited interest of CT for spontaneous pneumothorax. Aims of this retrospective case series were to describe CT features of this condition and determine if CT features can efficiently localize the perforation site. Dogs that had a spontaneous pneumothorax, CT examination, thoracic surgery, and confirmed lung perforation due to a grass awn were included. Computed tomography studies were reviewed and compared to the surgical findings.  In 19 of 22 (86.4%) dogs, the pneumothorax or its recurrence were ipsilateral to the perforation site. The perforation site was identified in 21 of 22 (95.5%) dogs and involved the caudal lobes in 20 of 22 (90.9%) cases. The lateralization and the involved lung lobe corresponded to surgical findings in 21 of 22(95.5%) dogs. The perforation site was characterized as a soft tissue attenuating focus lying against an extensive pleural thickening in 21 of 22(95.5%) dogs. An adjacent defect in the visceral pleura was seen in 13 of 22(59.1%) dogs. A grass awn was seen in 11 of 22(50%) dogs.  The pneumothorax distribution and grass awn position consistently indicated the perforation side in this sample of dogs. The comparison with surgical findings suggests CT might be helpful for future presurgical planning of this etiology for pneumothorax.  相似文献
