Background: Equid herpesvirus‐1 (EHV‐1) reactivation and shedding can occur in latently infected, asymptomatic animals. Risk factors for reactivation include stress and illness. The risk of asymptomatic shedding in hospitalized, critically ill horses with acute abdominal disease is unknown. This information is important to assess the need for additional biosecurity protocols to prevent spread of EHV‐1 in hospitalized critically ill horses with acute abdominal disorders. Objectives: To determine the frequency of reactivation and nasal shedding of EHV‐1 in hospitalized critically ill horses. Animals: One hundred twenty‐four client‐owned horses admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with acute abdominal disorders were included in the study. Methods: Cross‐sectional study examining the risk of reactivation of EHV‐1 in horses admitted with acute, severe, gastrointestinal disease. Whole blood and nasal secretions were collected throughout hospitalization. In addition, mandibular lymph nodes were collected from 9 study horses and 26 other Michigan horses. All samples were tested for the presence of EHV‐1 nucleic acid by real‐time PCR assays targeting the glycoprotein B gene and the polymerase (ORF 30) gene. Results: One hundred and twenty‐four horses met the inclusion criteria. None of the samples were positive for EHV‐1 DNA. Conclusion and Clinical Importance: These results suggest that nasal shedding and viremia of EHV‐1 in hospitalized critically ill horses with acute abdominal disorder is extremely rare. Implementation of additional biosecurity protocols to limit aerosol spread of EHV‐1 among horses with acute abdominal disease and other hospitalized horses is not necessary. 相似文献

Efficacy of oral famotidine and 2 omeprazole formulations for the control of intragastric pH in dogs

Background: Little is known about the efficacy of commonly used acid suppressants on intragastric pH in dogs. Objective: To compare the effect of oral famotidine, 2 formulations of omeprazole, and placebo on intragastric pH in dogs with a catheter‐free, continuous pH monitoring system. Animals: Six healthy adult mixed‐breed colony dogs. Methods: Utilizing a randomized, 4‐way cross over, open‐label study, dogs were administered famotidine PO (1.0–1.3 mg/kg q12h), omeprazole tablet (1.5–2.6 mg/kg q24h), omeprazole reformulated paste (RP) (Gastrogard, 1.5–2.6 mg/kg q24h), and placebo for 7 days followed by a 10‐day washout period. Radiotelemetric pH capsules were placed with gastroscopy assistance to continuously record intragastric pH for 4 days (days 4–7 of dosing). The percentage of time that intragastric pH was ≥3 and ≥4 was compared among treatment groups using repeated measures of analysis of variance. Tukey's Studentized range test was used to determine which groups were different with α= 0.05. Results: Mean ± SD percent time intragastric pH was ≥3 and ≥4 was 22 ± 8% and 14 ± 6% for famotidine, 63 ± 14% and 52 ± 17% for omeprazole tablet, 54 ± 17% and 44 ± 18% for omeprazole RP, and 6 ± 6% and 5 ± 5% for placebo. Both omeprazole formulations significantly increased intragastric pH compared with famotidine and placebo, but omeprazole tablet and RP was not significantly different from each other. Conclusion: Oral omeprazole tablet and RP provide superior gastric acid suppression to famotidine, and should therefore be considered more effective for the treatment of acid related disorders in dogs. 相似文献

A total of 281 faecal samples from owned shepherd and hunting dogs were collected in the Serres Prefecture, Northern Greece and were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 26% and the 11 species found were: Toxocara canis (12.8%), Trichuris vulpis (9.6%), Giardia spp. (4.3%), Isospora (Cystoisospora) spp. (3.9%), Ancylostoma/Uncinaria spp. (2.8%), Cryptosporidium spp. (2.8%), Alaria alata (2.5%), Strongyloides stercoralis (1.8%), Angiostrongylus vasorum (1.1%), Toxascaris leonina (0.7%) and Dipylidium caninum (0.3%). The prevalence of T. canis and Isospora (Cystoisospora) spp. was significantly higher in young than in adult dogs (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in prevalence between genders, except for T. canis, which was more common in male dogs (p < 0.05). 相似文献

Background
With concerns over the development of anthelmintic resistance in cattle nematode populations, we must re-examine our approach to nematode control in cattle. Targeted selective treatments (TST), whereby individual animals are treated instead of entire groups, are being investigated as an alternative. The study objective was to determine if anthelmintic usage could be reduced using a TST-based approach to nematode control in spring-born suckler beef cattle over their first and second grazing seasons (SGS) without affecting performance. In the first grazing season (FGS), 99 calves with an initial mean (s.d.) calf age and live weight on day 0 (June 28th 2012) of 107 (23.1) days and 160 (32.5) kg, respectively, were used. The study commenced on day 0 when calves were randomised and allocated to one of two treatments; 1), standard treatment (control) and 2), TST. Control calves were treated subcutaneously with ivermectin on days 0, 41 and 82 in the FGS. All calves were treated with ivermectin on day 124 and housed on day 133. In the SGS, only heifer calves from the FGS were used and control heifers were treated with ivermectin on day 393. Animals were weighed, blood and faecal sampled every three weeks. The TST animals were treated with ivermectin if thresholds based on a combination of plasma pepsinogen concentrations, faecal egg count and/or the presence of Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae in faeces (FGS only) were reached.Results
No TST calves reached the treatment threshold criteria in the FGS. The FGS average daily live weight gain (ADG ± s.e.m.) for control and TST group calves was 0.89 ± 0.02 kg and 0.94 ± 0.02 kg day−1, respectively (P = 0.17). In the SGS, all heifers were treated with ivermectin on day 431 due to clinical signs of respiratory disease. The ADG for control and TST heifers from turnout on day 321 to day 431 was 0.90 ± 0.04 and 0.80 ± 0.04 kg day−1, respectively (P = 0.03).Conclusions
Spring-born FGS suckler beef calves require minimal anthelmintic treatment to maintain performance. In contrast, clinical parasitic disease may develop in the SGS unless appropriate anthelmintic treatment is provided. 相似文献66.

The bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay is an alternative method to the in vivo Draize eye test in rabbits for evaluating eye irritation in vitro. Here, we compared the numerical results of the BCOP assay with the corresponding histopathology for three different corneas for each test substance, including commercially available shampoos, make-up removers and cleansing foams that contained surfactants and other ingredients. The histopathological score was defined based on the severity of lesions in the corneal epithelium. The histopathological findings and scores of the three sections for each test substance were comparable. The in vitro irritancy score (IVIS) generally corresponds to the corneal irritant potential of the test substances assigned on the basis of the histopathological findings in this study. In the present study, we characterized the histopathology of the corneal epithelium and stroma and especially showed that the corneal epithelial injury caused by test substances might be important in assessment of test substances that are mild eye irritants (category 2B) as classified by the United Nations (UN) Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), as corneal lesions suggestive of classification into category 2B were localized on the border between the corneal epithelium and stroma, which contained cell elements related to assessment of prognosis of an in vivo eye injury. Histopathological assessment might be useful in predicting in vivo ocular irritation, particularly for test substances with an IVIS >3.1 but ≤25 that are classified as mild irritants (category 2B) according to the UN GHS. 相似文献

AIM: To observe the effect of aerobic exercise and dietary patterns on the colonic function of type 2 diabetic rats and the enteric nervous mechanism.METHODS: The rat model of type 2 diabetes was induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (30 mg/kg, ip) injection, and the rats were divided into diabetes control (DC) group, HFD group, exercise (E) group and exercise combined with high fat diet (E+HFD) group. Some other healthy rats were arranged into normal control (NC) group. The rats in E group and E+HFD group received 8-week swimming training (5 d/week, 60 min/d). The colon samples were collected at the end of the 8th week for observation of the pathological changes by HE staining and for detection of colonic tension and expression of protein gene product 9.5(PGP9.5), substance P(SP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP).RESULTS: Diabetes induced significant myenteric plexus damages and marked reduction of neurons, while exercise protected the enteric nervous system from injuries. The expression of SP significantly increased in the rats with long-term aerobic exercise combined with a reasonable diet. However, high-fat diet combined with exercise did not obviously up-regulate SP. The positive expression of VIP in the colon significantly increased in both E group and E+HFD group. Aerobic exercise attenuated the atrophy and increased the tension in colonic smooth muscles.CONCLUSION: Diabetes induces muscular atrophy and tension attenuation in colonic smooth muscle, which can be reversed in some extent by aerobic exercise through the remolding of enteric nervous system. 相似文献

This paper describes the herbal remedies used by ethnic groups from Sonora, Mexico, for treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Twelve types of these illnesses are cured using 85 different species which belong to 38 families. Thirty nine spp. are used to treat diarrhea, 28 for stomach-ache, 12 for constipation, 9 for intestinal parasites, 6 for indigestion, 3 for stomach or intestinal cancer, 3 for stomach inflammation and only 1 to treat gastrointestinal sicknesses, ulcers, gastritis, colitis and colic. Regarding the use of species of plant per ethnic group the following was observed: Mayo 47; Seri, 27; Yaqui, 13; Guarijio, 12, Pima, 5 and Papago, 3.
