Effects of cropping systems on soil organic matter (SOM) in a pair of conventional and biodynamic mixed cropping farms were investigated. Soil samples (0–75 and 75–150-mm depths) were analysed for total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), microbial biomass C (BC) and microbial biomass N (BN), and sequentially extracted for labile and stable SOM using cold water, hot water, acid mixtures and alkalis. In the biodynamic farm, TC and TN decreased with increasing period of cropping but the reverse occurred under pastures. These were not shown in soils from the conventional farm, probably due to N fertilizer additions. Under pastures, increases in SOM were attributed to greater biological N2 fixation and the return of plant residues and excreta from grazing animals. Overall, sensitive SOM quality indicators found for labile SOM were BN, BN:TN and HC:TC, and for stable SOM were HCl/HFC, HCl/HFC:TC, humin C, humin N, humin C:TC and humin N:TN. The BN and BN:TN were better indicators than BC and BC:TC. The humin fraction was strongly related to both labile and stable SOM fractions suggesting that humin contained non-extractable strongly complexed SOM components with mineral matter and also non-extractable plant and microbial residual components. Remediation programmes are considered complete when human risk-based criteria are met. These targets are unrelated to the ecological parameters that may be important with regard to future soil uses. As a consequence, there has been a move towards the consideration of biological indicators for hazard assessment in conjunction with the remediation of contaminated soils. This study uses a range of biological assays to assess the ecological health of soils from a former gas works site undergoing various remediation treatments. The indicators that optimally differentiated the extent of soil remediation were biomass-C, respiration, dehydrogenase activity, earthworm toxicity and mustard seed germination. Although they had different end-points, once robust and sensitive biological indicators were incorporated into a quantitative soil quality index, they gave a clearer representation of ecological health than chemical data alone by their integration of contamination effects at a number of trophic levels.  相似文献

对我国玉米干燥时的品质进行了研究并与自然晒干的玉米作了比较。测定了玉米由含水率26%-27%干燥到14%-25%时的裂纹率和裂纹指数。研究了四种粮食干燥机的干燥品质即顺一逆流、横流、混流和蒸汽式干燥机。太阳晒干和蒸汽干燥机干后的玉米裂纹率最少,裂纹指数最低,顺—逆流干燥和横流干燥裂纹率及裂纹指数最高。混流干燥的玉米品质居中,虽不及太阳晒干和蒸汽干燥的,但大大优于横流和顺—逆流干燥机的干燥品质。  相似文献

In an agricultural landscape in eastern Austria eight terrestrial organism groups were investigated as potential biodiversity indicators. We present a cross-taxon congruence assessment obtained at the landscape scale using two groups of plants (bryophytes and vascular plants), five groups of invertebrates (gastropods, spiders, orthopterans, carabid beetles and ants) and one vertebrate taxon (birds). We tested four different approaches: correlated species counts, surrogate measures of the overall species richness that was assessed, a multi-taxa (or shopping basket) approach and a simple complementarity algorithm. With few exceptions, pairwise correlations between taxa, correlations between one taxon and the species richness of the remaining groups, and correlations between a combination of the richness of two taxa and the remaining species richness were highly positive. Complementarity-derived priority sets of sampling sites using one taxon as a surrogate for the pooled species richness of all other taxa captured significantly more species than selecting areas randomly. As an essential first step in selecting useful biodiversity indicators, we demonstrate that species richness of vascular plants and birds showed the highest correlations with the overall species richness. In a multi-taxa approach and in complementarity site selection, each of the eight investigated taxa had the capability to capture a high percentage of the overall species richness.  相似文献

Although agricultural land management is known to affect near-surface soil physical quality (SPQ), the characteristics of these affects are poorly understood, and diagnostic SPQ indicators are not well-developed. The objective of this study was to measure a suite of potential SPQ indicators using intact soil cores and grab samples collected from the 0–10 cm depth of a clay loam soil with the treatments: (i) virgin soil (VS); (ii) long-term continuous bluegrass sod (BG); (iii) long-term maize (Zea mays L.)—soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) rotation under no-tillage (NT); (iv) long-term maize–soybean rotation under mouldboard plough tillage (MP); (v) short-term (1–4 years) NT after long-term MP; (vi) short-term MP after long-term BG; (vii) short-term MP after long-term NT. Organic carbon content, dry bulk density, air capacity, relative water capacity and saturated hydraulic conductivity appeared to be useful SPQ indicators because they were sensitive to land management, and proposed optimum or critical values are available in the literature. Soil macroporosity was also sensitive to land management, but optimum or critical values for this parameter are not yet established. Soil matrix porosity and plant-available water capacity did not respond substantially or consistently to changes in land management, and were thus not useful as SPQ indicators in this study. Converting long-term BG to MP caused overall SPQ to decline to levels similar to long-term MP within 3–4 years. Converting long-term NT to MP or vice versa caused only minor changes in overall SPQ. With respect to the measured SPQ indicators and their optimum or critical values, both VS and BG produced “good” overall SPQ in the near-surface soil, while long-term maize–soybean rotation under NT and MP produced equally “poor” SPQ.  相似文献

Microbial biomass C and activity were determined in six forest soils along a gradient in physical and chemical climate in Europe. Both parameters were measured microcalorimetrically. The upper 22 cm of the soils were sampled in undisturbed columns (24 cm deep). Measurements were made in homogenized samples of the different surface organic horizons (Ol, Of, Oh) and the mineral horizons (Ah, Aeh, Bv) down to 22 cm.On a mass basis values for both the biomass and the activity showed an exponential decrease with depth in all soils. Expressed on a volume basis these relationships varied with soil pH. in the strongly acidified soils most of the microbial biomass and activity was located in the forest floor. In less acidified soils both parameters were highest in the mineral soil.Further relationships between biomass and activity and between soil chemical properties showed significant positive correlations with exchangeable Ca2+, Mg2+, Ca/Al and negative correlations with Al3+. There were no significant correlations with exchangeable cations in less acidified soils. It was calculated that the microbial biomass is more affected by soil chemistry than activity. The caloric quotient (qW) is a good parameter for determining the ecophysiological state of microorganisms in acidified soils.  相似文献

Unstressed and stress-induced plasma corticosterone levels in Galápagos marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) were compared in animals from a site heavily exposed to tourism to animals from a site undisturbed by humans. Initial corticosterone levels not only did not differ between the two groups, but they were 50% of levels in iguanas known to be chronically stressed. These data suggest that iguanas in tourist areas are not chronically stressed. Both groups of iguanas exhibited elevated corticosterone levels after 30 min of capture and restraint, indicating that they can physiologically respond to stressful stimuli. The stress response was lower, however, at the tourist site. This result indicates that iguanas are physiologically affected by tourism, although it is presently unknown whether these changes are ultimately beneficial or harmful.  相似文献

The current program of vicuña conservation includes their live-capture for wool harvest in the Andes Region in northern Chile. Here, we describe studies that assess the impacts on the species of different variables relating to the capture process. The immediate physical and physiological effects on vicuña of contrasting capture methods, chase distances and restraint were measured.Comparisons between two methods of capture showed that cortisol concentrations were higher in animals herded using vehicles alone compared to those herded using a combination of vehicles and local people on foot. Blood glucose levels, heart rate and respiratory rate showed an immediate but ephemeral response to herding into a corral. The range of distances over which animals were herded caused less noticeable changes in blood and physical parameters. The most marked changes were associated with restraint, during which there were significant increases in creatin kinase, packed cell volume and rectal temperature. The implications of changes in these parameters on vicuña welfare and conservation are discussed.  相似文献

Reintroductions and translocations are increasingly used as conservation tools. However, despite guidelines recommending that health-screening be an integral part of such programmes, few reports are available. For most species, even baseline data, against which to compare future results, are not published. Here we report two case studies of health surveillance in wildlife reintroduction programmes - for water voles (Arvicola terrestris) in Australia, and for marsupial dibblers (Parantechinus apicalis) in the UK. These illustrate the potential importance of even basic screening strategies in helping to avoid disease transfer and identifying predictors of survival. Factors to be considered in the design of future monitoring schemes are also discussed.  相似文献
