During periods when the population size of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus is large, the abundance of 1‐yr olds has been considered to be dependent on the growth and survival processes in the late larval and early juvenile stages in the Kuroshio–Oyashio transition region off northern Japan. Recent growth rates for 10 days before capture of larval and early juvenile E. japonicus were estimated and examined in relation to the surface water temperature and the available copepod density in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Late larval and early juvenile E. japonicus were distributed in the waters with temperature from 15 to 19°C and available prey density from 10 to 1000 mg dry weight (DW) m?2 in the transition region. The late larval growth rates were found to be regulated more strongly by water temperature than by copepod density in the waters <16°C, and more strongly by copepod density than water temperature in the waters <100 mg DW m?2 in the Kuroshio–Oyashio transition region. The recent growth rates decreased from the western waters to the eastern waters in the survey area 140–170°E in 1998, correlating with decreases of food availability to 50–100 mg DW m?2. While in 1999, the recent growth rates were faster in the waters east of 150°E, resulting from eastward expansion of warm water ranges and high available prey density 100–400 mg DW m?2. The key environmental factors regulating late larval growth rate of E. japonicus in the transition region seem to be spatially different between years.  相似文献

This study evaluates the effect of the number and sex of contemporary siblings on male-like play behavior of Suffolk lambs (Ovis aries). Fourteen males and 14 females, all single born, plus 26 ram lambs born co-twin to another male (n = 14) or female (n = 12) as well as 26 ewe lambs born co-twin to another male (n = 12) or female (n = 14) were observed daily for 7 weeks from 1 week of age. Two observers sitting outside a sand-bedded pen (10 × 5 m) recorded received and performed behavior (butts, nudging, attempts to mount, and mounts) by the lambs in the pen from 08:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 17:00 hours. Animals were in the pen only during the observation periods; the rest of the day they remained with their mothers in individual pens. Male-like play behavior patterns were displayed by both male and female lambs. Males were more active (P < 0.05) than females. Butting was the most frequent activity and performed mostly by ram lambs, recipients were generally males, and most resulted in reciprocal simultaneous encounters (sparring). Single males performed most of the nudging activity, which was the least frequent of the observed behaviors. Males with twin brothers mounted significantly (P < 0.05) more than males with twin sisters, and females with twin sisters performed the lowest amount of gutting and nudging. Lower (P < 0.05) levels of activity were found during the first 2 weeks. Overall, it was concluded that male lambs performed and received more male-like play behaviors than female lambs and the influence of sex of contemporary sibling was restricted to some behaviors: butting and nudging in females and mounting in males.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of different dietary levels of vitamin C, L‐ascorbyl‐2‐polyphosphate (ASPP), on growth and tissue vitamin C concentrations in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck et Schlegel). Fish were fed one of six semi‐purified diets containing an equivalent of 0, 25, 50, 75, 150, or 1500 mg ascorbic acid (AA) kg?1 diet (C0, C25, C50, C75, C150 or C1500) in the form of ASPP for 12 weeks. Weight gain (WG) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed the C0 diet were significantly lower than those of fish fed the other diets (P < 0.05), and WG and PER of fish fed the C25, C50 and C75 diets were significantly lower than those of fish fed the C1500 diet (P < 0.05). Fish fed the C0 diet exhibited vitamin C deficiency symptoms such as anorexia, scoliosis, cataract, exophthalmia and fin hemorrhage at the end of the 12‐week test. After 12 weeks of the feeding trial, AA concentrations from gill, kidney, and liver of fish fed the C0, C25, C50 and C75 diets were significantly lower than those of fish fed the C150 and C1500 diets (P < 0.05). Based on broken line analyses for WG and PER, the optimum dietary levels of vitamin C were 91 and 93 mg AA kg?1 diet respectively. These findings suggest that the dietary vitamin C requirement could be 93 mg AA kg?1 diet to support reasonable growth, and greater than 150 mg AA kg?1 diet may be required for AA saturation of major tissues for juvenile olive flounder under experimental conditions.  相似文献

Two shelter substrates (fibre-cement sheets and PVC pipes) and two foodsupply frequencies (once and twice daily) were tested on white-clawed juvenilecrayfish in two separate experiments performed under laboratory conditions.Juvenile crayfish were maintained at an initial density of 50 animals persquaremetre in a flow-through system and fed on fresh Daphniapulex and a feed formulated for rainbow trout. After 120 days,highersurvival (50.5%), but lower growth, was obtained when fibre-cement sheets wereprovided as shelter. A comparison between food supply frequencies showed abetter survival rate (60.5%) when food was provided twice per day althoughtherewere no differences in growth after 80 days of trial. The number of animalswith chela autotomy is positively correlated (r between 0.33 and 0.48 depending ontreatments) with decreases in survival rate. The combination of adequate shelterand frequency of food supply could reduce the agonistic behaviour of juvenilecrayfish.  相似文献

  1. The European eel, Anguilla anguilla, is a catadromous and migratory species of commercial importance. Its complex life cycle results in its exposure to many risk factors, which have resulted in stock declines across all life stages since the 1970s.
  2. The temporal recruitment dynamics of juvenile eels (glass eels and elvers) were investigated in a small Mediterranean estuary (Sardinia, Italy). The composition of the population and the monthly and seasonal variations in the abundances of juvenile eels was assessed over 78 sampling events (from February 2017 to February 2018). Furthermore, the effects of abiotic variables on the abundances of glass eels and elvers were investigated using generalized additive models (GAMs).
  3. Glass eels had the greatest abundance during the winter months, whereas elvers had the greatest abundance during spring. Modelling revealed that the abundance of glass eels was mostly explained by the combined effects of water temperature (12.3–14.5 °C), tidal coefficient (40–110 cm), moon phase, season, and river mouth condition, whereas the abundance of elvers was associated with water temperature (14–21 °C), dissolved oxygen content (>7 mg/L), and season. These results suggest that the annual recruitment of juvenile eels occurs throughout the year, with clear seasonal migration dynamics.

The use of multiple statistical approaches allowed us to identify the importance of several environmental variables in regulating the recruitment dynamics, providing useful information for conserving eel stocks through the restoration of the natural flow regime and the connectivity between freshwater habitats and the sea.

Our collaborative work focused on understanding the system of mechanisms influencing the mortality of juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Coordinated field studies, data analysis and numerical modelling projects were used to identify and explain the mechanisms and their roles in juvenile mortality. In particular, project studies addressed the identification of major fish and bird predators consuming juvenile salmon and the evaluation of three hypotheses linking these losses to (i) alternative prey for predators (prey‐switching hypothesis); (ii) salmon foraging behaviour (refuge‐dispersion hypothesis); and (iii) salmon size and growth (size‐refuge hypothesis). Two facultative planktivorous fishes, Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) and walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), probably consumed the most juvenile pink salmon each year, although other gadids were also important. Our prey‐switching hypothesis was supported by data indicating that herring and pollock switched to alternative nekton prey, including juvenile salmon, when the biomass of large copepods declined below about 0.2 g m?3. Model simulations were consistent with these findings, but simulations suggested that a June pteropod bloom also sheltered juvenile salmon from predation. Our refuge‐dispersion hypothesis was supported by data indicating a five‐fold increase in predation losses of juvenile salmon when salmon dispersed from nearshore habitats as the biomass of large copepods declined. Our size‐refuge hypothesis was supported by data indicating that size‐ and growth‐dependent vulnerabilities of salmon to predators were a function of predator and prey sizes and the timing of predation events. Our model simulations offered support for the efficacy of representing ecological processes affecting juvenile fishes as systems of coupled evolution equations representing both spatial distribution and physiological status. Simulations wherein model dimensionality was limited through construction of composite trophic groups reproduced the dominant patterns in salmon survival data. In our study, these composite trophic groups were six key zooplankton taxonomic groups, two categories of adult pelagic fishes, and from six to 12 groups for tagged hatchery‐reared juvenile salmon. Model simulations also suggested the importance of salmon density and predator size as important factors modifying the predation process.  相似文献
