The effects of various binders and moisture content on pellet stability of research diets for freshwater crayfish 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Two experiments were conducted to assess the water stability of a practical research diet manufactured with various binders and differing levels of moisture. In the first experiment the binders – agar, gelatine, carrageenan, and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were included at both 3 and 5% of total ingredient weight. All binders were tested with equal ingredient weight to water volume, and additionally carrageenan was tested in a diet with double the water volume. The dry matter remaining following immersion for up to 180 min was calculated and the rate of pellet decay was modelled using the Weibull distribution. The analysis revealed that the rate of dry matter loss decreased with time, and that carrageenan and CMC binders were significantly better (P < 0.001) binders than the agar and gelatine. The 5% binder concentration slowed the decay rate by as much as 62% as compared with the 3% binder concentration. The second experiment compared the binding performance of carrageenan and sodium alginate in both 50% moisture and 10% moisture pellets. The same analysis revealed that 10% moisture alginate‐bound pellets were more water stable than the others. A discussion of the use of moist diets for crayfish research is included. 相似文献

Size rank and growth potential in redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus): are stunted juveniles suitable for grow‐out? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Considerable size variation emerges at an early stage among redclaw (Cherax quadricarinatus) juveniles. In order to explore whether juveniles from different size fractions of the same population differ in their growth potential, they were reared individually, in the absence of social effects. In the first experiment, post‐release siblings were reared for 5 weeks and then categorized into three size fractions: small, med‐sized and large. Subsequently, juveniles of each size fraction (n=24, 18, and 18, respectively) were reared in individual cells for 46 days and their moult increments and moult intervals were compared. In addition, the growth indices of the med‐ and large‐sized juveniles were compared with those of juveniles from other broods that were similar in age and size but belonged to a different size fraction, in order to separate the effect of absolute size from that of size rank. In a second experiment, juveniles from the small‐, med‐ and large‐size fractions (n=21) of a commercial nursery‐reared population were individually reared for 14 weeks and their growth indices were compared. Survival of individuals from the small‐size fraction was low, particularly in the first experiment, and increased with fraction size. However, small‐sized juveniles did not show reduced growth potential and even grew at a faster rate than large‐sized juveniles. The results indicate that social interactions plays an important role in the development of size variation, and that small juveniles have the potential to grow rapidly when reared in individual compartments. Overall, the size rank was a poor predictor of growth potential. 相似文献

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a serious pathogen of aquatic crustaceans. Little is known about its transmission in vivo and the immune reaction of its hosts. In this study, the circulating haemocytes of crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, infected by WSSV, and primary haemocyte cultures inoculated with WSSV, were collected and observed by transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy following in situ hybridization. In ultra-thin sections of infected haemocytes, the enveloped virions were seen to be phagocytosed in the cytoplasm and no viral particles were observed in the nuclei. In situ hybridization with WSSV-specific probes also demonstrated that there were no specific positive signals present in the haemocytes. Conversely, strong specific positive signals showed that WSSV replicated in the nuclei of gill cells. As a control, the lymphoid organ of shrimp, Penaeus monodon, infected by WSSV was examined by in situ hybridization which showed that WSSV did not replicate within the tubules of the lymphoid organ. Four practical diets containing 2% of crude protein (CP) (180 and 280 g kg?1), with or without menhaden fish meal (FM), were fed to Australian red claw Cherax quadricarinatus during a 97‐day feeding trial. Growth, survival, body composition and processing traits of pond‐cultured red claw were determined. Juvenile red claw (mean individual weight of 5.75 ± 3.3 g) were randomly stocked into twelve 0.04‐ha ponds at a rate of 1000 per pond (25 000 ha?1), and each diet was fed to three ponds. At harvest, the final mean weight of red claw fed Diet 4 (0 g kg?1 FM and 280 g kg?1 CP) and Diet 3 (113 g kg?1 FM and 280 g kg?1 CP) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (62.4 and 58.5 g, respectively) than red claw fed Diet 1 (73 g kg?1 FM and 180 g kg?1 CP; 51.7 g) and Diet 2 (0 g kg?1 FM and 180 g kg?1 CP; 53.0 g). Red claw fed diets containing 280 g kg?1 CP, with or without FM, had significantly higher percent weight gain (894 and 959%, respectively) compared to red claw fed 180 g kg?1 CP, with or without FM (778 and 799%, respectively). Feed conversion ratio, percent survival, and total yield among treatments, which averaged 3.55, 65.2%, and 724 kg ha?1 overall, were not significantly different. Results from this study indicate that pond‐cultured red claw stocked at 25 000 ha?1 can be fed a practical diet containing 280 g kg?1 CP with 0 g kg?1 FM if a combination of plant‐protein ingredients (soybean meal, distillers’ dried grains with solubles, and milo) is added; however, if the percentage of dietary protein level is 180 g kg?1, growth is reduced even if FM is added at 73 g kg?1 of the diet. Approximately 440 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal ribose nucleic acid (rRNA) coding region were sequenced from 13 marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith), samples from six locations and samples of two additional Cherax species from Western Australia. The results indicated that, with the exception of the Margaret River, no variation was found within or between marron populations. In contrast, marron from the Margaret River were found to be polymorphic for two divergent haplotypes (2.76% divergence). These findings were consistent with allozyme data that highlight the general lack of genetic variability within and between populations of this species apart from the Margaret River stocks. The genetic polymorphisms in the Margaret River stocks contrasted with earlier studies and indicated the recent translocation and mixing of genetically differentiated stocks within this river system. The implications of these findings for the conservation and management of genetic diversity within marron are discussed. 相似文献

The effect of treatment and supplementary value of corn (C) or crayfish (CR) on the protein quality of breadfruit (Treculia Africana) flours were studied in eighteen young rats. The 7030 or 701515 (Protein basis) combinations of breadfruit flours and corn or crayfish or both provided 1.6g N/100 g diet for the 35 day study. The addition of akanwu to the cooking water reduced cooking time and crude protein and saved fuel. The addition of akanwu and replacement of CR with C was not beneficial as judged by the parameters tested except for the wt. gain and PER. On the other hand, when crayfish was the only source of supplementary protein (30%) to breadfruit cooked without akanwu there were increases in all parameters tested over those with added akanwu except for the N intake, wt. gain, and PER.These results appear to suggest that addition of akanwu to TA was detrimental to its protein utilization and that TA appears to be an economic source of N in areas where it is a staple. Based on the results of this study, one would suggest that the use of akanwu as a tenderizer should be seriously looked into before further use. 相似文献

Louisiana State University Agricultural Center cost estimates for single-crop crawfish production costs are analyzed for the period, 1991–2010, to determine changes in the cost components of Louisiana crawfish production. Fuel costs have contributed the most and fixed expenses the least to increased production costs, with total expenses per acre increasing by an average of 3.8% per year if land is not included and by 3.6% per year if land is included. Crawfish prices have varied greatly over the period, ranging from $0.50/lb in 1993 to $1.75/lb in 2000. Production practices used by Louisiana crawfish producers are highly variable, creating challenges for estimating representative production cost estimates. 相似文献

Redclaw aquaculture has developed at a rapid pace during the past few years, yet no specialized diet for the species has been developed. The present study was designed to evaluate whether soybean‐based diets containing either fishmeal (FM), poultry by‐product meal (PBM), ground peameal (GPM) or distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) meal as a protein source are suitable for redclaw aquaculture. Juvenile redclaw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (0.125±0.025 g) were stocked into 20 rectangular tanks at a stocking density of 12.5 m?2 for 8 weeks. Crayfish in four replicate tanks were maintained on one of five diets formulated to contain 35% crude protein and 7.1% lipids. Each 100 g of diet contained 25 g of protein from soybean meal (SBM) and 10 g of protein from the alternative protein sources mentioned above. A fifth treatment that did not receive feed was included to account for growth from natural productivity. There were no significant differences in survival (86–90%), growth (3.84–4.98 g animal?1) or feed conversion ratio (2.10–2.79) of crayfish among the four treatments (P>0.05). Survival and growth of crayfish in the treatment that received no supplementary feed were significantly less than those in treatments offered experimental diets. Results of the present experiment suggest that SBM‐based diets with PBM, FM, DDGS or GPM have similar effects on growth performance and survival of juvenile redclaw, C. quadricarinatus. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Most insecticides used to control rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuscel) infestations are pyrethroids. However, pyrethroids are highly toxic to non‐target crayfish associated with rice–crayfish crop rotations. One solution to the near‐exclusive reliance on pyrethroids in a rice–crayfish pest management program is to incorporate neonicotinoid insecticides, which are insect specific and effective against weevils but not extremely toxic to crayfish. This study aimed to take the first step to assess neonicotinoids as alternatives to pyrethroids in rice–crayfish crop rotations by measuring the acute toxicities of three candidate neonicotinoid insecticides, clothianidin, dinotefuran and thiamethoxam, to juvenile Procambarus clarkii (Girard) crayfish and comparing them with the acute toxicities of two currently used pyrethroid insecticides, lambda‐cyhalothrin and etofenprox. RESULTS: Neonicotinoid insecticides are at least 2–3 orders of magnitude less acutely toxic (96 h LC50) than pyrethroids to juvenile Procambarid crayfish: lambda‐cyhalothrin (0.16 µg AI L?1) = etofenprox (0.29 µg AI L?1) ? clothianidin (59 µg AI L?1) > thiamethoxam (967 µg AI L?1) > dinotefuran (2032 µg AI L?1). CONCLUSION: Neonicotinoid insecticides appear to be much less hazardous alternatives to pyrethroids in rice–crayfish crop rotations.
