The effect of including high or low tannin forage peas as an alternative to soyabean meal on performance and N efficiency was investigated using 18 dairy cows in two Latin square design studies. Two varieties of forage pea; Racer (coloured flowers; high tannin) and Croma (white flowers; low tannin), were ensiled 12 weeks post sowing. The in situ degradability characteristics of the pea silages were determined using 4 cannulated sheep. The low tannin forage had a higher soluble N (a) fraction and a greater extent of degradation (a + b), resulting in a greater amount of N being predicted to be released in the rumen than the high tannin forage. In experiment 1, cows were fed one of three treatments in each of 3 periods of 28 d duration in a Latin square design; grass silage/whole-crop wheat (0.50:0.50, DM basis) and 8 kg/d of a high protein concentrate (GWH); grass silage/whole-crop wheat/high tannin forage pea silage (0.25:0.25:0.50 respectively, DM basis) and 8 kg/d of a high protein concentrate (HTH) or 8 kg/d of a low protein supplement (HTL). The inclusion of forage peas increased (P < 0.05) DM intake by 1.2 kg DM/d, but there was no effect of dietary treatment on milk yield (average of 23.0 kg/d), composition or live weight change. The efficiency of use of dietary N (N output in milk/N intake) was highest (P < 0.001) in cows when fed GWH (0.289) and lowest in HTH (0.234). In experiment 2, cows were fed one of three treatments in each of 3 periods of 28 d duration in a Latin square design; grass silage/whole-crop wheat (0.50:0.50, DM basis) and 8 kg/d of a high protein concentrate (GWH); grass silage/whole-crop wheat/low tannin forage pea silage (0.25:0.25:0.5 respectively, DM basis) and 8 kg/d of a high protein concentrate (LTH) or 8 kg/d of a low protein concentrate (LTL). Compared with GWH, the inclusion of forage peas increased (P < 0.05) DM intake by 2.0 kg/d, but there was no effect of dietary treatment on milk yield (average of 24.5 kg/d). Milk fat content was highest (P < 0.05) in cows when fed LTL (45.7 g/kg) and lowest in LTH (41.9 g/kg), but there was no effect (P > 0.05) of treatment on daily fat yield or any other milk component. The efficiency of dietary N use was highest (P < 0.001) in cows when fed GWH (0.300) and lowest in LTH (0.234). It is concluded that either high or low tannin forage pea silages can replace approximately 1.1 kg/d of soyabean meal in the diet of mid-late lactation dairy cows without affecting animal performance, but N efficiency for milk production is decreased. 相似文献

Helminth infections are a major cause for reduced productivity in livestock, particularly those owned by the poor worldwide. Phytomedicine has been used for eons by farmers and traditional healers to treat parasitism and improve performance of livestock, and many modern commercial medicines are derived from plants. However, scientific evidence on the anti-parasitic efficacy of most plant products is limited, regardless of their wide ethnoveterinary usage. Scientific validation of the anti-parasitic effects and possible side-effects of plant products in ruminants is necessary prior to their adoption as a novel method for parasite control. A variety of methods has been explored to validate the anthelmintic properties of such plant remedies, both in vivo and in vitro. In vitro assays are useful as pre-screens of activity and are mainly performed with the free-living rather than parasitic stages of nematodes. Concentrations of potentially active substances used in vitro do not always correspond to in vivo bioavailability. Therefore, in vitro assays should always be accompanied by in vivo studies when used to validate the anthelmintic properties of plant remedies. In vivo controlled studies have shown that plant remedies have in most instances resulted in reductions in the level of parasitism much lower than those observed with anthelmintic drugs. Whether it is necessary or not to achieve very high efficacy in order for plant remedies to have a role in the control of parasitism depends on the determination of biologically important levels of reduction of parasitism and it will be required prior to the wide-scale use of plant products for parasite control. Similarly, standardisation of validation studies in reference to the numbers of animals required for in vivo studies to measure direct anthelmintic effects of a plant needs to be established. Although in many cases the active compounds in the herbal remedies have not been fully identified, plant enzymes, such as cysteine proteinases, or secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, glycosides and tannins have shown dose-dependent anti-parasitic properties. However, as some of the active compounds may also have anti-nutritional effects, such as reduced food intake and performance, it is essential to validate the anti-parasitic effects of plant products in relation to their potential anti-nutritional and other side effects. A concerted effort on isolation, development, and validation of the effects of these herbal remedies will have to be undertaken before their wider acceptance. 相似文献

Two short‐term palatability experiments indicated that supplementation of diets containing 15.0% of canola meal or 30.5% of air‐classified pea protein with 3.3% or 3.9% thin distillers' solubles (dry matter basis), respectively, increased feed intake (P < 0.05) of rainbow trout over a 4‐day period. Supplementation of the same diets with 6.6% or 1.9% thin distillers' solubles, respectively, did not increase feed intake (P > 0.05). Supplementation of the diets with 1.0% of a commercial palatability enhancer did not increase feed intake (P > 0.05). A subsequent 12‐week growth experiment evaluated the long‐term feed intake enhancing capability of thin distillers' solubles. Supplementation of diets containing 20.0% of air‐classified pea protein or 20.0% of canola meal fines with thin distillers' solubles (4.0%, dry matter basis) over a 12‐week period had no effect on feed intake or growth of rainbow trout fed either diet (P > 0.05). The reduction in the palatability enhancing ability of thin distillers' solubles may be the result of the fish becoming accustomed to the taste of this product over a longer feeding period, or because of the possible destruction or alteration of the amino acids involved in gustatory stimulation during thermal processing. 相似文献

Cats are among the most popular pets in the U.S., and the majority of these animals are kept indoors where litter boxes containing some type of absorbent litter material are needed. Dried distillers grains (DDGs) are a major co-product of the ethanol industry, and are primarily sold as animal feed. We have been studying value-added uses for DDGs by extracting valuable phytochemicals from them with a variety of organic solvents. The objective of this research was to determine if the extracted DDGs could be formulated as cat litter. Extracted DDGs absorbed significantly more water (termed hydration capacity) than unextracted DDGs, although sorting the extracted DDGs by particle size had no effect on hydration capacity. Through the addition of glycerol as a dust retardant and guar gum as a clumping agent, a formulation was obtained with desirable physical properties. The addition of copper sulfate to this formulation significantly reduced the release of a volatile odor compound that is chemically similar to the odor compound produced by the decomposition of cat urine. From these results it appears that extracted DDGs have potential as commercial cat litter. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementing methionine hydroxy analogue (MHA) on the performance, body composition, and nutrition retention of rainbow trout. In experiment 1, a 2×4 factorial arrangement with two MHA supplemental levels (with and without) and four fish meal replacement levels (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, replaced with soybean meal (SBM) and wheat gluten) was used. A fish meal diet was included as a control. Results showed that fish meal replacement levels had significant effects on fish weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), body moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and ash (P<0.05). In experiment 2, a fish meal reference diet and seven other diets were made using SBM and distiller's dried grain with solubles supplemented with 0, 0, 0.55, 1.1, 1.65, 2.2, and 2.75 g MHA kg?1 diet to replace 50% of fish meal. WG, FCR, and apparent retention of crude protein and phosphorus were significantly improved in rainbow trout fed the diet containing 1.65 g MHA kg?1 diet compared with fish fed an equivalent diet without MHA. 相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted in a closed system with Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles (mean initial weight, 2.66 g) to examine total replacement of menhaden fish meal (FM) with distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), which had been used as substrate for the production of black soldier fly larvae, Hermetia illucens, in combination with soybean meal (SBM) and poultry by‐product meal (PBM), with or without supplementation of the amino acids (AA) DL‐methionine (Met), L‐lysine (Lys) and a commercial non‐amylaceous polysaccharide enzyme (Enz) product. Fish were fed seven isoenergetic [available energy (AE) = 4.0 kcal g?1 of diet] and isonitrogenous (350 g kg?1 protein as‐fed basis) practical diets formulated with equivalent digestible protein levels. Diet 1 was formulated to be similar to a commercial, high‐quality, tilapia diet containing 200 g kg?1 FM. Diets 2–5 were formulated as a 2 × 2 factorial to replace FM with similar contributions from DDGS (45%), PBM (25%) and SBM (2.1–2.9%), but to differ in supplementation of AA and/or Enz preparation. Diets 6 and 7 were formulated to investigate the effects of a 2/3 and 1/3 reduction, respectively, in DDGS contribution to the replacement protein mix, with concomitant increases in SBM, with respect to diet 3, and were balanced with Lys and Met. After 6 weeks, growth responses were slightly attenuated (P ≤ 0.05) and average daily intake (ADI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were slightly higher in tilapia fed DDGS diets 2–5 compared to those of fish fed the FM control diet 1. Growth responses were not significantly affected by the presence or absence of AA or Enz (diets 2–5), or the level of DDGS (diets 3, 7 and 6). Whole‐body proximate composition was not different among treatments. Amino acid profiles of fish fed DDGS diets were not significantly different from those of fish fed the FM control. Evidence of interaction between AA and Enz supplementation was detected in whole‐body amino acid concentrations such that AA content was higher with AA or Enz addition alone, but lower when both were added to the diet. Results suggest that DDGS replacement of FM in tilapia diets can be substantial when diets are formulated on a digestible protein basis and DDGS is combined with highly digestible animal (PBM) and plant proteins (SBM). 相似文献

Background: Post-production fractionation of wheat distillers grains with solubles(DDGS) increases their crude protein content and reduces their fiber content. This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of fractionation of wheat DDGS on apparent total tract digestibility(ATTD) and performance when fed to broiler chicks(0–21 d).Methods: A total of 150,day-old,male broiler chicks(Ross-308 line;Lilydale Hatchery,Wynyard,Saskatchewan) weighing an average of 49.6 ± 0.8 g were assigned to one of five dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. The control diet was based on wheat and soybean meal and contained 20% regular wheat DDGS.The experimental diets contained 5,10,15 or 20% fractionated wheat DDGS added at the expense of regular wheat DDGS.Results: The ATTD of dry matter and gross energy were linearly increased(P 0.01) as the level of fractionated wheat DDGS in the diet increased.Nitrogen retention was unaffected by level of fractionated wheat DDGS(P 0.05).Weight gain increased linearly(P = 0.05) as the level of fractionated wheat DDGS in the diet increased.Feed intake, feed conversion and mortality were unaffected by level of fractionated wheat DDGS in the diet(P 0.05).Conclusions: Post-production fractionation of wheat DDGS improves their nutritional value by lowering their fiber content and increasing their content of crude protein and energy. These changes in chemical composition supported increased weight gain of broilers fed wheat DDGS. 相似文献
