The case of a 50-day-old Thoroughbred foal affected by sudden muscular weakness and failure to swallow associated with recumbency is described. The clinical picture suggested a diagnosis of botulism. At necropsy, nonglandular gastric mucosa presented deep ulcerations. No other macroscopic nor microscopic lesions were detected. Clostridium botulinum type B was isolated from the lesions of gastric mucosa, whereas the cecal and colonic content, assayed for both spores and toxins, were negative. Moreover, analyses of all potential environmental sources of toxins near the feeding areas were negative. It was concluded that the colonization of gastric ulcers may have contributed to this unusual case of botulism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of botulism in horses reported in Italy, which is also the first case anywhere of wound botulism caused by infection of gastric mucosa lesions. 相似文献

The present study focuses on the microbial recalcitrance of pyrogenic organic material (PyOM) on a molecular scale. We performed microcosm incubation experiments using 13C- and 15N-enriched grass-derived PyOM mixed with a sub soil material taken from a Haplic Cambisol. Solid-state 13C and 15N NMR studies were conducted to elucidate the humification processes at different stages of PyOM degradation. The chemical structure of the remaining PyOM after incubation was clearly different from the initial pyrogenic material. The proportion of O-containing functional groups was increased, whereas that of aryl C and of N-containing heterocyclic structures had decreased, probably due to mineralisation and conversion to other C and N groups. After 20 months of incubation the aryl C loss reached up to 40% of the initial amount and up to 29% of the remaining PyOM C was assigned to carboxyl/carbonyl C and O-aryl C. These reactions alter the chemical and physical properties of the char residue and make it more available for further microbial attack but also for adsorption processes. Our study presents direct evidence for the degradation of N-heterocyclic domains in charred plant remains adding new aspects to the understanding of the N cycling in fire-affected ecosystems. 相似文献

Data of the "Static Fertilisation Experiment Bad Lauchstädt" were used to identify the effect of different fertiliser application on yield, various energetic parameters as well as on carbon and nitrogen balance of the long-term trial in a selected time period (1991-2000). The fertiliser regimes considered, are neither mineral fertiliser nor farmyard manure (without/without), mineral NPK and no farmyard manure (NPK/without), no mineral fertiliser and 10t ha m 1 a m 1 farmyard manure (without/10), mineral NPK and 10t ha m 1 a m 1 farmyard manure (NPK/10), no mineral fertiliser and 15t ha m 1 a m 1 farmyard manure (without/15), as well as mineral NPK and 15t ha m 1 a m 1 farmyard manure (NPK/15). The farmyard manure was only applicated to root crops. The crop rotation included sugar beets, spring barley, potatoes and winter wheat. In most cases, the treatment NPK/10 yielded in the most favourable results whereas the treatment without/without was the most unfavourable one. Sugar beets were - followed by winter wheat - the most profitable crops, potatoes the most unfavourable one. The fossil energy input was highly variable; it ranged from 4.1 to 24.3GJ ha m 1 a m 1 depending on fertiliser regime and crop. The total yield (based on main products and by-products) varied from 2.1 to 20.1t dry matter ha m 1 a m 1 , corresponding to an energy output between 3.4 and 33.6GJ ha m 1 a m 1 . The energetic parameters energy gain (net energy output) and energy intensity ranged form 25.5 to 315GJ ha m 1 a m 1 and from 143 to 1824MJ GE m 1 , respectively. The carbon balances resulted the highest C gain with the exclusive mineral fertilisation (NPK/without), followed from the treatment NPK/10. The same applies for the nitrogen balances. 相似文献

We investigated whether the long‐term application of compost from agricultural waste improved soil physical structure, fertility and soil organic matter (SOM) storage. In 2006, we began a long‐term field experiment based on a rice–wheat rotation cropping system, having a control without fertilizer (NF) and three treatments: chemical fertilizers (CF), pig manure compost (PMC) and a prilled mixture of PMC and inorganic fertilizers (OICF). Following the harvest of wheat in 2010, the mean‐weight diameter (MWD) of water‐stable aggregates and the concentration of C and N in bulk soil (0–20 cm; <2 mm fraction) were significantly greater (P < 0.05) in PMC and NF plots than in CF or OICF plots. Pig manure compost significantly increased the proportion of >5‐mm aggregates, whereas CF significantly increased the proportion of 0.45‐ to 1‐mm aggregates. The C and N contents of all density fractions were greater in PMC than in other treatments with levels decreasing in the following order: free particulate organic matter (fPOM) >occluded particulate organic matter (oPOM) > mineral‐combined SOM (mineral–SOM). Solid‐state 13C CPMAS NMR spectra showed that alkyl C/O‐alkyl C ratios and aromatic component levels of SOM were smaller in PMC and OICF plots than in CF plots, suggesting that SOM in PMC and OICF plots was less degraded than that in CF plots. Nevertheless, yields of wheat in PMC and NF plots were smaller than those in CF and OICF plots, indicating that conditions for producing large grain yields did not maintain soil fertility. 相似文献
