Adoption of improved crop varieties by involving farmers in the e-wallet program in Nigeria

The amount of improved seed used in Nigeria is extremely low. Overall, only 5–10% of cultivated land is planted with improved seeds, and about 10% of rural farmers use improved varieties. The objective of this investigation was to identify determinants of adoption of improved seed by farmers not participating in and those participating in the federal government’s e-wallet program in Nigeria. We determined the impact of the e-wallet program on adoption of improved seed in rural areas. A total of 1200 rural farmers were sampled across six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Results from the use of a bivariate probit model indicated that the e-wallet program continued to become increasingly popular among rural farmers; and that farmers’ literacy, ownership of a mobile phone, value output, mobile network coverage, power for charging phone batteries and contact with extension agents were the positive determinants of farmer participation in the e-wallet program. Cultural obstacles to married women, growers’ age, and increased distance to registration and input collection centers reduced farmers’ tendency to participate in the e-wallet program. The results also showed that rural farmers depended on the e-wallet program for increased use and adoption of improved seed in Nigeria, to boost food security in sub-Saharan Africa. The results suggested the need for an improved e-wallet model by lessening constraints mostly associated with rural information and communication infrastructure, and distance to the registration and input collection centers.

Characteristics of Brittle Failure and Stress Drop Under Triaxial Loading and Unloading

The characteristics of deformation failure and stress brittle drop of granite under loading and unloading conditions are studied respectively based on two unloading stress path cases and conventional triaxial compression experiments. The experiments show that the primary deformation of rock is rebound or tension in the (main) unloading direction, but plastic deformation in the non or sub unloading direction is not significant. And the curves of stress strain after peak strength present obvious brittle. Whilst the primary deformation of rock under loading is axial pressure deformation, and plastic deformation increases with the raise of confining pressure. The fracture is characterized by strong tensile, and all tensile cracks are fully developed. Furthermore, when the rock samples are unloaded in two directions, and even normal to unloading direction, sub unloading annular tensile cracks are produced. The shear fractures is obvious comparatively when confining pressure becomes higher, and it develops following tensile cracks with more micro tension cracks formed in two sides along shear plane. But the fracture is characterized by shear under conventional triaxial compression with little tensile cracks; the coefficients of brittles stress drop of granite is increased with the growth of confining pressure under conventional triaxial compression and reduced under unloading. When the initial confining pressure is the same, the coefficients of brittles stress drop under unloading is less than that under loading. In SchemeⅡ, the coefficients of brittles stress drop reaches negative when initial confining pressure is up to 30 MPa, and the one （R）is RⅢ>RⅠ>RⅡ in three test cases.

Atmospheric Environmental Impact Simulation of Gas Fired Boilers as Peak Load Heat Sources

Heating with gas can reduce air pollutant emission and therefore becomes a new sort of peak load heat source. To study the atmospheric environmental impact, we adopted a newly built combined heating system and simulated its pollutant dispersion for centralized and distributed peak heating. The simulations were based on the improved regulatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) guidelines for atmospheric environment. The model developed an algorithm for infill wind direction simulation and exported pollutant contours for comparisons. Simulation results show that the system's atmospheric environmental impact is related not only to the pollution emission quantity per quantificational heating, but also to the distribution of heat resource in the gas fired boilers. The centralized peak heating has comparatively small environmental impact; for distributed peak heating, the more concentration of gas fired boilers distribution is applied, the more serious environmental impact will be. In addition, the optimum setting proportion of gas fired boilers should be between 0.2 and 0.6 from the perspective of environmental impact.     

Uranium recovery from leach solution in in situ leaching of uranium with ion exchange absorption

The absorption of uranium by ion exchange resin is studied based on the characters of pregnant solution for a new uranium in situ leaching mine. The resin types, the absorption parameters and the eluting parameters are chosen in the experiments. The results showd that the 201×7 strong alkaline anion exchange resin and TSF 2 anion exchange resin had good absorption and eluting effects. The fixed bed anion exchange absorption is a suitable technology and NH4NO3＋HNO3 mixed solution is an appropriate eluting reagent for this technology.
